"h lira woith living In these pallid days,
When all the crth U pulseless, thirsting
gold!
Why aro wo shrunken from that holght ol
old,
When men would die for glory'a twining
bayst"
So sang a mslden with a trumpet cyo
Ami tin that nealcd a poem with
word,
"What life is this we live and die unheard,
Boncath a silent and too sunny sky!
"Wero it not hotter to' have lived In Greece,
And hoard Demosthenes striko Philip
down
With words that seared the lustro of his
crown,
And wroto road war across tho brow of poai!
"Were it not hotter to havo lived la Rome,
When Cmsar with Insatlabloblado,
Carved out a path through overy hill and
glade,
Until he mado tho frlghtonod world his
home?
"Wore it not bettor to have lived and dlod
Uoforo men foil upon such Idle days,
Bcforo tho world had learned suoh coward
ways?
Is llfo worth living nowt" sho sadly cried.
"Truly, I connot toll thoo that, my swoot,"
I saldj "but hero's an answer meet for
thee;
Llfo thun or now wcro worth tho world
to mo
If I but lived It lying at thy foot."
W. J, Jfenderion.
M. Sassotfs Vallet.
In 1880, M. Paul Sneson resided on tlio
Uoulovnrd do Foullly, Paris. Ho wna a
speculator nud rtnnnclor, and nbout fifty
yoara of ago. Ho wns mnrricd, and had
a dauglitor Corinno and n Bon CnarlcH.
Ho kojit up auoxponslvo establishment,
and was reputed rich. Early hi tho
yenr nnniod, ho bocaino rosorvod and
morose, and was constantly talking to
his family about tholr oxtravoganco and
tho necessity of reducing oxponscs. At
longth ho grow almost violont in Ills
conduct towards "his family, and tho
greatest forboaranco had to bo exorcised
by them.
October 2ht, M. Sasson wont to tho
city early. About noon ho roturnoil
early with a van, and sot sovoral men to
work removing tho picturos from tho
parlors. Ho was vory stern, and took
no notico of his family, who did not ox-
postulate. Ho returned to tho city, and
was not at homo until Into. Tho noxt
morning at broakfast ho informod his
family thnt ho was nbout to curtail his
establishment, and to that ond hiul ro
solved to inovo into a smaller and loss
pretentious dwelling.
"Havo you miflurod suoh heavy lnsuos
as to rondor this nccossary?" his wlfo
asked. "It is vory inopportuno just at
this juncturo, whon Corinno oxpecta
soon to rocolvo n proposal of marriago."
"Lot her marry whom sho ploasos,"
ho rep'.iod roughly, "sho will soon bring
him to poverty with hor oxtravaganco."
"Sho is nought liy a worthy gentle
mnn," tho son mid, uuml tho connection
is in overy way desirable"
"It is proper for you not to interfero
in such mutters," tho father said ; "you
will lmvo enough to do to attend to your
own cures in lifo. You havo already
failed in two examinations at collego.aml
havo shown you red f incompotout for
anything."
"I am compolont," tho son replied
with warmth : "to protect my mothor
and vlstor."
"Insolent I" cxclaimod tho fathor, nud
rushing towards him, ho clonohod his
tUt as though to striko him.
Mine. Sanson interposed her poreon
between tho irato man nud his sou. M.
Sasson ground his toetli with rago, and
then struck his wifo a violent blow ovor
tho sido of tho head. Tho son was ready
to grupplo with his father, hut his moth
or entreated hhu to forbear. Soon after
wards M. Sasson quilled tho house.
After a brief consultation Mine. San
son resolved to peek refugo with her sis
ter, and her children resolved to accom
pany hor. Trunks wero hastily packed
and preparations mado for iiuuuxliato
departure. Whilo hor children were en
gaged in this work, Mine. Sasson went
to a bureau where her husband kept it
revolver.
"If ho should return and seo us pro
paring for departure, ho might do some
thing dosporute," ulio tuiid to liorsclf.
Sho took the pistol from tho drawor,
aud holding it among tho folds of her
dress, wont to her apartments. As sho
quitted tho library, 8ho found SI. Bos
ton's valet at the door. Ho turned
asido and mado no remark, and sho pass
ed on in silence. On reaching tho
apartments occupied by horsolf and hor
husband, sho found her children busy
packing. Sho placed tho rovolvor be
hind a vase on tho mantlopicco without
being obsorved.
When M. Sasson returned homo in
tho evening, ho found tho liouso desert
ed. Tho valet told him that his wifo
inn ciiiiuron mu uopartou togouior,iiav
ing first packed Bovcral trunks, which
thoy had taken with them.
"I snw mndnm going to your buronu
in tho library," tho vnlot said at tho
conclusion of his story.
M. Sasson wont to tho library and ex
amined tho bureau.
"My revolver has bocn removed," ho
said.
"I saw madamo quit tho library," tho
valet said, "holding by her sido. some
thing which was concealed by tho
drapery."
In tho ovoning Mmo. Sasson discover
ed that sho had loft a largo sum of
monoy in hor boudoir. Sho had im
mediato need of this sum, and how to
got it was tho subject of much thought.
Sho dotorminod to say nothing of it to
her children, for fear Oharlcs should in
sist upon going to their formor rosidonco
for it, and thus, perhaps, bo brought
Into collision with his fathor. Finally
oho devised n scheme Sho had tho
koys of tho sido entranco to tho garden
mid of a privato entranco from tho gar-
don to tho houso. Sho thought that in
tho darkness sho could oasily find admis
sion to tho dwolling-houso, reach unpor
ooived tho boudoir, proouro tho monoy
and return without any ono being tho
wiser for her ndvonturo. To got hor
childron out of tho way, sho suggested
that thoy should visit her brothor, who
resided n mllo nway, nnd communicato
to him tho stop sho had taken.
As soonns thoy woro gone, sho quitted
hor sistor's houso unknown to any ono
but hor maid, whom sho had takon with
hor, and, procuring n cab, wont to with
in a hundred yards of hor formor rcsi
donco in tho Uoulovnrd do Noullly. Di
recting tho driver to wait for hor return
sho wont toword tho dwelling, oponing
tho gato into tho garden with caution ;
sho loft it ajar nnd crossed tho Inwn to
n sido door. This sho nlso left ajar, bo
ing nfraid that tho closing of it might
rouso tho inmates. Without difficulty
or molestation sho ascondod tho stairs
and succeeded in gotting possession of
tho monoy. Sho quitted tho houso, still
leaving tho door ajar, but on passing out
of tho gnrdon sho closod tho gato and
hastily walked toward tho cab, Sho
reached her sistor's houso bcforo her
onildrcn roturnod and without her nb-
sonco having boon noticed.
Tho noxt morning M. Sasson failed to
call for his valot as usual. Aftor waiting
for somo timo, according to tho valet's
fltatomont, ho wont to his mostor's
npartmont nud found him lying in bod
with a bullet hole in his bond. On tho
covorlot lay his rovolver. His wntch and
purso wcro missing. His wardrobo had
bcou ransacked, and his oscritoirio
broken opon. Thoro was uo doubt that
tho assassin had been at work.
Tho judgo of instruction aud his offi
cers invosiigntcd his tho oaso and arriv
ed at tho conclusion that murder nnd
robbery had boon done.
Tho valot told what ho know nbout
tho family troubles, and tho fact of M.
Sasson nnd hor childron having left hor
homo tho previous day on account of
whnt had passod botweon Monsieur nud
his wifo and Hon. Tho valet related tho
incident of tho rovolver.
Hut how had any ono entered tho
houso. Jean Ohaulmn, tho valot, testi
fied that early in tho morning, as ho was
taking tho milk at tho garden door, ho
observed that tho sido door of tho house
was ajnr, aud going in that way, ho
closed it aftor him. Tho garden wall
was high, but an oxport olimbor could
easily ecalo it on either side.
Tho gondarmes on duty near by tes
tified that botweon 10 aud 11 o'clock tho
previous night ho saw a cab standing
within a few hudred feet of tho houso.
Ho spoko to tho driver, who said :
"Somo gay old bachelor must livo near
by, for n vory comely woman has just
disappeared by tho sido of that house."
Tho cabman was easily found by tho
police. Did ho know tho lady? No
where did ho tako hor up? On tho cor
ner of tho Ituo do Momy and tho Fau
bourg St. Honorc. M. Sassou's sister
resided on tho Ruo do Momy, near tho
lino do Ponthiou. It was n very pain
ful conclusion to rea.'h, but there was no
avoiding it Mmo. Sasson had assassi
nated her husband, nud tho missing ar
ticles woro taken merely to turn asido
suspicion. Sho had lived unhappily
with him ; ho had dctormincd to reduce
his establishment ; ho had struck her!
All these facta were testified to by do
mestics. Thou camo tho op'i6odo of tho
pistol, narrated by tho vallet, and tho
furthor fact, admitted by SI. Sosson'a
maid when bIio was clovcrly captured on
tho etroet and removed to tho offico of
tho Judgo of Instruction, that SInie. Sob
son had a key to tho gardon and tho
sido door of tho house, and that sho had
been absent from her sister's houso for
two hours between 0 :30 nnd 11 :30 tho
night of Octobor 22d.
Everything being thus clear, Mmo.
Sasson was arrested nnd clmrgod with
tho crimo of murdor. Mmo. Sasson
doniod tho accusation, and told tho
story as tho reader has it bcforo him,
omitting tho opisodo of tho pistol.
"Do you romombcr going to tho bu
reau in tho librnry boforo you loft tho
houso Octobor 22d?" tho Judco of In
struction asked her.
"Yes, I do."
"You took a rovolvor out of tho bu
roau, and you havon't montioncd tho
fact."
"I did ; but I rofraincd from saying
anything ubout it, becauso I did not
wish to havo to Bay that I was afraid my
husband might shoot ono or tho other of
us."
"What did you do with tho pistol?"
"I put it behind a vaso on tho mantlo
picco in my husband's apartment, in
tending to romovo it, but I forgot it."
In consultation afterward, tho judgo
said to Goupo, a'dctcctivo :
"This woman does not talk or look
liko n guilty porson. If sho is not guilty
and, mark you, sho has just tho 'sum
of monoy sho says sho wont for to tho
boudoir, and tho missing watch has not
hcon found nenr or about hor if sho is
not tho assassin, how camo tho murder
er to find tho pistol hiddon behind (ho
vaso? You havo seen tho vaso, nnd
know just whoro nnd how sho laid it.
Is it possiblo that any ono whom SImo.
Sasson loft behind her did tho deed?"
This suggostion put tho dotoctivo on
n lino of inquiry, and ho pursued it with
vigor, but found no clow. SImo. Sasson
was convicted of tho killing of hor hus
band, nnd Bontonccd to fifteen yoara' im
prisonment. Jean Chauban, tho formor valot of
SI. Sasson, assumed tho niuno of Itou
maiuo and oponod n wino shop in the
Huo Orouso, near tho Dois do Boulogne.
Six months aftor Mmo. Sassou's convic
tion, in tho spring of 18S0, dotoctivo
Goupo waB looking for a wandoring
swindlor who had cheated Bovoral chari
tablo ladios in tho suburbs of tho city.
In his wandorings Goupo dropped into
tho wineshop of Jean Iloumaino, nnd
was soon on friondly tornis with that
gontloman, for ho immediately identi
fied him, olaboratoly transformed ae ho
was, as SI. Sassou's former valot, whom
ho had watchod for a month in various
disguises, to 8co wnotuor no could con
nect him with tho crimo of Octobor 22d.
SI. Iloumaino had a splondid gold
chain on his vest, nnd Goupo asked him
tho timo. Ho pulled out tho olegant ro
pcator, which Goupo had no hesitation
in saying oxnetly answorod tho descrip
tion of tho watoh fitolon from SI. Sasson
whon ho was murdorcd.
"A lino watoh," said tho ofllcor.
"Yes a prosent from n dead friond,"
answorod Iloumaino.
"Ah, vory precious, no doubt," said
tho oflicor.
"A sad romombranco," a sad romom
brnnco," was tho reply, with nu assumed
look of sorrow.
"I onco know n gontloman who had
a watch just liko that," Baid tho dotoc
tivo, "and, strnngo to say, ho is dead
also."
A coincidence," said tho vnlot.
"Won't Slonslour drink?"
"Thanks," was tho reply. ''It is a
atrango coincidence, nnd, would you
boliovo it, my friond was murdorcd.
Why, Slonsiour, what is tho matter with
youT Was your friond muniorod also?"
"Xo, no, not that, Slonsiour," was tho
answer; "but your words startled mo.
Slurdor, you see, is suoh a dreadful
words, thoro was no help for him.
Quietly and without nny show of resist
ance, Iloumaino wont with tho officer.
Tho watch in his possession, tho monoy
which ho had invested in tho wino shop,
woro ovidenco ngainst him, nn'd at
longth ho broko down and confessed his
guilt.
"I saw madamo quitting hor boudoir
on tho night of October 22d, nnd fol
lowed her to tho gardon. I saw hor
leavo tho door ajar and go out by tho
garden. It at onco struck mo that horo
was a good chanco to rob my master
nnd lay it to his wifo. After sho nnd
tho childron had quitted tho houso I
searched for tho pistol nnd found it
behind tho vobo. Aftor I was suro that
monsiour was fast asleoD I cot tho re
volver and wont to his room. Ho had
drunk heavily bcforo retiring, but to my
Burpriso ho awoke as I was rummnging
tho wardrobo. Ho cried Thiovesl' nnd
was about to got out of bed, when I
firod and ho foil back dead. Then I
gathered all tho plunder I could nnd hid
it away. I did not volunteer too much
information during tho investigation,
becnuso I thought tho ovidonco would
convict SImo. Sasson without much say
on my part."
It is needless to say that Mmo. Sasson
was roloascd and Jean Chauban eont to
tho gallows.
