Many farmers who complain that their poultry is not paying them should con sidor whether they have- given their fowls tho samo attontion so generally bestowed upon horses and cattlo or swino. By actual expenenco thoro is moro monoy in raising poultry to sell eggs at from 10 to 12 cents per dozon than raising hogs nt 8 conts per pound. South and Wost (St. Louis, Mo.) Oats nro excellent for hons, especially if fed in connection with gross. During tho summer thoro is no necessity for feeding an oxclusivo grain diet, but if oats nro given plentifully tho hens will lay without becoming too fat. Tho supposition that oats, when eaten, swoll in tho crop and do damage is not truo. Any kind of grain will swell, but as tho fowls begin to lessen the quantity of food in tbo crop as soon as it is full thoro is room enough for tho oats to swoll, but it is doubtful if oven enough moisture is taken to swell thorn, nssomo kinds of food nro profcrrod in a dry condition. Tho dry oats aro cxcollont, but if tboy aro buried in tho ground, and allowed to sprout tboy undergo a chemical chnngo of composition, and will bo grnodily scratched up and de voured. Fattening Poultry. After tbo laying season comes tbo timo for reducing on numbers by work ing off tho old. hens. The sooner all surplus can bo convortcd into monoy tbo bottor, for no board bills will bo paid by many fowls now for a long time, Sometimes, too, early fattened fowls bring as good n prico os thoso marketed nt tho holidays, with tbo gain of tho cost of kcoping for somo months in tho bargain. To fatten fowls rapidly is tbo great secret of doing so profitably. This necessitates that they bo kept closely confined during tho process. Even tho matter of profit asido and tbo increased cxccllcnco of tho flesh of closely kopt fattened stock over that which is allowed to roam is remarkably great. For bens tbo coops should bo airy, but if so small as to allow but ono lion in each all tho bettor. Whcro Individ ual coops aro not had, thou sovcral and up to half a dozen fowls may bo con' fined togothor in a coop, but of such a eizo as will lcavo fairly uncrowdod, and with not much spaco to spare. If tho bottom is mado of Blats three inches wido, with an inch spaco botwocn, and then tho coop is raisod from tho ground some who t, it will add to tho airiug and clcanlinoss of tho affair. Turkeys, ducks and gecso do bottor for being in coops open to tho ground. Tbo two last named should bo allowed to run to tbo water onco daily for a wash. Fattening coops should bo locatod in u partly darkened placo. At tho start givo no food for six or eight hours, and thon begin a courso of regular feeding thrco times a day. Do not iniagino that becaueo fowls show a profcronco for eating wbolo grain that this is tbo best, for it is not. Lot tho ground work bo corn moal well crumbly. "With this may bo mixed a variety of articles, such us boiled potatoes, oat meal or barloy porridgo, and ono should not forgot- tho helpful naturo of stalo bread crusts and so on from tbo tabic, A littlo boef Buct added occasionally will bo rolisbod, and this possesses high fattening properties. Thoro must bo puro and frnh water in tho coop also. As soon as tho birds aro satisfied ntcach eating nil remaining food should bo removed. In two or thrco weeks tboy should bo very fat and salable. If tho high feeding and closo confinement was to bo kept steadily up thoy would bo disposed to Bickon. Poultry Homes. How to mako lions lay in winter, when eggs bring tbo highest piico, is ono of tho things that any ono who keeps poultry for profit wonts to know ; but how many farmers over stop to think thut a comfoitablo poultry bouso goes a long way toward inducing hons to lay when tbo mercury gets below tbo freezing point? By a comfortablo bouso I do not mean ono that can bo warmed artificially, but one so constructed that tbo temperature insido will bo above tbo freezing point, even when it is several degrees below zero outside. Such bouses need not be expensive. Cheap building material of some kind stones, rocks, straw, prairie bay or rough lumber and building paper aro within the reach of the poorest farmer, and any man or boy of average strength and "gumption" can do tho work. Now is tho time to b lilil. Don't put it off. Yon hoiiM luivo tho bouso dono and tho fowls in it boforo tho cold, rainy days and nights of lato fall get along. And now is tho timo for thoso who bavo poultry houses that need repairing to fix them up for wintor. If tho roof loaks in spots, mend it; if it is poor all ovor, put on n now coat of good shingles. I say good shingles, because a good sbinglo roof pays. It cobU as much to lay poor sbinglos as good onos, and they will not lost half as long. But if yon cannot really afford good shingles for tho roof, do tho best you can. Got somo of tho tarred roofing felt; it answers very well, muoh better than poor shinglos. Also, mond the broken windows, and stop up tho cracks whcro tbo wind blows right through on tho fowls when on tho roost. Boosting in a draft of air is tho way that a good many fowls got colds that ends in roup. Somo of tho farmers, in our vicinity, who put up ehoap poultry houses just rough boarded, with tho cracks batten ed last season, aro now fixing thorn ovor and making thorn moro comfortablo by ripping off tho buttons, covoring tho bouso with building paper, and then rough-boarding over that. All this be cause ono man built that way to begin with, and his noighbors saw lost winter that his bouso was much moro com fortablo, and that his hons laid hotter than thoir's. Oast. Many houBowivcs think that tho less tbo dust is stirred in swooping, the bottor tho work is done, and tea leaves and wet grass and moistened moal aro thrown about tho floor in order to gather, tho dust and provont it from rising. But pooplo giving tho matter philoso phical attention bavo como to tho con clusion that precisely tho opposito courso is. tho fit and proper ono; that a good stirring up and thon a good blow ing out is what tho dust needs, and that with a wind blowing unobstructcdly through tho room as thoroughly as a wind can bo mado to blow. Tho samo rulo applies to wild ducks, whoso foot, though, aro red, besidos boing smaller than thoso of tamo ducks, Gamo can bo just as easily selected, if you know how, which most folks don't. Partridges, for instanco, if young, will bavo black bill and yellow legs; if old, wbifo bills and blue legs. II. E. Hayes, Worthy Lecturer of tho Stato Grango in Oregon, has invaded tho Territory of Idaho, and to good pur pose Idaho is under tbo jurisdiction of tbo Worthy Master of tho Oregon Stato Grango. Brother Hayos has organized two good Granges wiihin a month in Idaho. -Thoy aro livo, aotivo, enthusi astic Grangos and roport to tho Secretary of tbo National Grange that tboy "aro in Idaho county, Idaho Torritory, to stay, progress, build up tho Ordor and bo n voico nnd power in tho National Urango ero long." Tho printed proceedings of tho twen tieth annual session of tho National Grango, a book of 105 pages, aro now boing sent out through tho different sec retaries of Stato Grange; two copies for each Subordinate Grange. Tbo im portant reports of officers and commit tees should bo carefully read and studied in every Grango that the plans and work of our Ordor may bo well under stood, and thon all should help earnestly in the work of carrying them on to suc cess. . Tho Patrons of Now Hampshire aro arranged for a series of lectures during the Wintor, covering all parts of the State. Six different lectures will fol low each other in this lecture courso. Massachusetts Patrons are also to have a series of lectures by the Lecturer of tho National Grange in February. Brother C. L. Whitney will continue his work in Ncbarska during January.
