POULTRY NOTE8.
Brown Leghorns woro first introduced
from Leghorn, Itnly, nnd liuvo been
greatly improved by American breeders
sinco thoy lmvo bocomo bo popular with
us ns egg producers.
This month will find the fowls most
nil through molting nnd we mny soon
look for nn increase- in crl'9. Provided
wo don't got one of thoso Enstorn bliz
zards. Many pcoplo think that when thoy
only Iinvo limited room that fowls enn-
not bo kept. This is u mist nku, fowls
will do nuito ns well if confined if not
too many together nnd their npartmonts
arc kopt scrupulously clean, nnd given
n variety of food every tiny. Of courso
pounded shells nnd gravel must be put
in their reach.
As soon ns flocks of hens aru kept in
largo numbers, say from fifty to a hun
dred, together in pons, it will bo found
that tho nvcrngo number of eggs will bo
greatly diminished. Twenty to thirty
is enough in ono pen, nnd oven less will
bring hotter results. When ycu in
croaso tho number yon may oxpoct a
decrenso in tho egg basket.
Two many fowls will bo disastrous to
any poultry raiser hero. Wo say tho
business is limited. Wo have tried,
others lmvo triod, to keep fowls in largo
numbers nnd mnko it profitable, but
with no 8UCCOS8. Wo know thoro is
profit of from ono to a hundred per cent,
in a small Hock. Incrcaso nnd tho
profits decronso in proportion.
Loft us Nothing to Bar.
A few days ago wo hnd tho pleasure
of meeting ono of our old poultry friends
and breeder of many yoars experience.
In n social chnt nbout tho many varie
ties of fowls, wo finally camo to Buff
Cochin. Wo started in to toll our friend
what wo know of thnt breed, but ho
edged in nnd got tho first "say." Sni.l
he, I owned n BufiT Cochin lien onco
(just ono) nnd sho was determined to
Bet, nnd I was determined thnt sho
should not. After trying sovcrnl appli
cations of cold wntor baths,, nnd numer
ous other npplicntions to brenk up tho
broody fovor with no success, I finally
hit on to tho idea to tako tho tines of nn
old pitchfork nnd put it in tho nost,
feeling assured thnt I hnd her this time,
but what was my surpriso and astonish
ment on visiting tho coop tho
next morning to find her setting on tho
tines apparently ns contented ns though
sho was having n full cinch of eggs.
Wo were asked to go on with our argu
ment for tho HulT, but nil wo could do
was to rcluto to him tho story of two
negroes who wcro selected out of n party
of opossum hunters in tho Stnto of Wis
consin to decido for them whnt wns tho
best dish for them to cut. Tho first
ono snid "possum nnd sweot-tntcrs."
Tho othor darkoy said his friend had
Baid it all and had loft nothing that was
good.
Artificial Incubation.
I don't seo as much ns I should liko
written for tho monthly concerning
artificial incubation. It can't bo thnt
among your numerous contributors and
correspondents thoro nro not many
using incubators, but perhaps their ex
perience is not pleasant Wo gonerully
hoar of tho successes. Silonco covers
tho failures, excepting when tho man
who fails is alone. Experience is in
structive if not gratifying. I havo a
fow grains of tho article. I hesitated
long beforo purchasing nn incubntorf
nnd then bought tho only complcto nnd
satisfying mnchino in existence. Tho
manufacturer said so. It is not an
cloctrio regulating affair. I would lmvo
nono of thoso onco, but now porhaps it
might be different, nnd yet I hnvo heard
of men who, having nn electric hen,
wished they had not. So it goes.
Whichovcr you get you wish you
hadn't. Mino is a self-regulator, to tho
manufacturer said, ilo knows. I
haven't much of on opinion on that
point yot, having boon godfather to but
thrco clutches. When I havo tinkered
with tho thing as many long years as
tho invontor I may havo somethint!
positivo to say. I think soveral things
now, but that's no evidence. Thero is
only ono Perfect Hatcher. But as there
nro not hatched any perfect men in this
world, it puzzles mo to know how tho
perfect hatchers nro produced. I havo
never hatched over soventy-fivo per
cent, and that but once, fifty per cent
being as high as I got on other occasions,
but taking into consideration tho
amount of time spent, shoo leather
gone, nnd nnxb caused, I should havo
hatched nout iwo hundred per cent.
1 ecum-lv emr rotircd for tho night
without ri-i.i.is of roast chicken in tho
shell, for fno freaky chest gavo mo no
pence. I think nn incubator can shell
out moro crooked-toed, wry-billed, nnd
goncrally rickety chicks than any hen
ever invented. I killed a chick to-day
that had escaped my notice, that had n
bill liko a scissors not tho first by n
long way nnd I havo nearly a score
whoso toes aro an oxasporntion to thorn.
They nro tending upward to the pot.
Somo chicks hnd bnck stnggcrs nnd
some St. Vitus' Dance. Ono was stone
blind. Somo enmo forth too soon, nnd
many had to ho assisted, only to die n
miscrnblo death. The broodors nro nico
things too. You forgot to fill tho lnmp
mnybo, nnd thou enrly in March there
aro rofrigorntcd chickens. Or you got
too' high n flnmo nnd find thb tnuk
hissing like n safety vnlvo with a darkoy
on it, whilo tho chicks are huddled
outside wondering what mado tho old
hen get so hot. Or you neglect to
koep tho tank full perhaps and find tho
thing busted into tuin. I sometimes
think a hen is tho most porfect incu
bator nnd 'brooder yet discovered, nnd
yot tho mnnufneturers sny not. There
is a discropnnoy somowhoro. Imagina
tion is n foarful and wonderful thing.
A man can imagino moro fun with nn
incubator beforo ho gets ono than ho
can surround afterwards. Tho inventor
of mino paid thnt a couplo of quarts of
oil wns sufficient to hatch 100 chicks,
but ho moant if you put tho eggs under
n hen. I put mino in the incubator
and it took nearer a gallon. Thoro aro
quito n number of things that cotno to
light as a hatch progresses, thnt arc, to
speak gently, very lightly touched upon
in tho circulnra. It wouldn't do to let
tho whole refulgence on at ono full
swoop, you see, or, as tho engineers aro
in tho habit of putting it, to "pull her
wido open." But enough. Tho inven
tion of man must havo trope, and in
tho incubator lino thero is amplo room.

GRANGE MOTES.
Tho Grnngo is now twenty years old.
It has stood tho test of time. It has
been "weighed in tho balnnco nnd (not)
found wanting." It i'b ono of tho largest
organizations of any kind now in tho
country. Tho 20th annual session, just
hold in Philadelphia, was ono of tho
largost nnd best over held Every
Stato but four was represented and
good work nnd progress wnB reported
from nearly nil sections.
Tho Grange pnssed its period fo reac
tion seven or eight yoars ago. It passed
its experimental ago and settled down
to solid work. Each succeeding year
shows an incrcaso of new Granges nnd
growth in mcmlicrslup when tho wholo
field is looked over.
Ninety now Granges wcro orgnnuod
in 1880, nnd ninety-one in 18SG ; of thct-o
Connecticut reports 15; Pennsylvania,
11.
Tho Master of tho National Grnngo,
Put Darden, of Mississippi, in his an
nual address at tho opening of this
meeting, said : "Wo meet to-day, as an
Order, aftor nn existenco of twenty
years, under encouraging auspices and
with flattering prospocts. Tho Grnngo
has been on trial during this long
period of time, has successfully com
battcd tho strongest opposition, has
passed tho experimental ago and been
established as ono of tho permanent and
stable institutions of tho country.. Not
withstanding its largo membership
scattered over this broad land in nearly
overy county, parish, Stato and Torritory
it has never disturbed the peace of
the country, or done anything hostile to
tho general welfare. Opposed to all
class antagonisms, its tendency has ever
been n development nnd improvement.
It offers to tho American farmer tho
only woll grounded hopo for protecting
nnd advancing his interests."
No reform, moral or intellectual, over
camo from tho upper, classes of society.
Each and all como from tho protest of
martyr and victim. Tho emancipation
of tho working pcoplo must boachioved
by tho working pooplo thoineolvcs.
Wendell Phillips.
Tbo very best class of farmers nro now
uniting with tho Grnngc. Thoso who
havo boon willing to labor and givo tho
management, oven of thoir own ntlairs,
into tho hands of thoso who have stood
ready to take tho results of their labor,
but aro at Inst nwnkening from their
long sleep to find themselves living
lives of isolation, without business habits
and with few social advantages. Thoy
nro asking why wo should not assist
each other, why mny wo not co-oporato
and sccuro for our lnbor better returns T
Shall wo not break up this isolation and
meet whore our families mny havo a
season of enjoyment and recreation?
Tho general objects of tho Pntrons of
Husbandry aro found in theso fow
words from tho "Declaration of Pur
poses:" "United by tho strong nnd
faithful tio of agriculture, wo mutually
resolve to labor for tho irood of our
Order, our country and mankind."
Not for mnny long yenrs did Congress
nnd Stnte Legislatures so well give oar
and heed to tho just and proper de
mand of the farmers of our country as
during tho past year. Important mat
ters in which overy farmer nnd his
family nro interested will como beforo
Congress this Winter. Will our farmers
bo orgnnized enough to speak and bo
heard with no uncertain sound?
Wo say to tho greit army of Patrons,
'nko courngo nt tho good results already
achieved, and so labor that in the next
genoration our sons and daughters may
not bo known as tho "hewers of wood
and drawers of water."
A little bag of mustnrd laid on tho
top of tho pickle-jnr will prevent tho
vinegar from becoming moldy if tho
pickles hnvo boon put in vinegar that
has not lccu boiled.
