Tho Grnngo is nn orgnnization of per rons engaged in nn industry moro ex tensive tlmn any otlior and most licnofi cent in its influences, ngriculture, tho foundation and support of nil industries that contribnto to tho comfort, pi ensure and lmppiness of man, Its nims nnd purposed nro open to viow, for in these tbcro is no concealment. Its obliga tions nro consistent with tho virtues Hint distinguish tho highest order of civil ization. It relics upon organization ns i means of ollectiiig ndvnnccment to moro exalted worth, not for tho few who may bo recognized ns lendors, but nil who join in its beneficent work, nud its field is wider still, for its inllucneo ex tends to tho remotest relation of tho great industry it represents. With theso lofty purposes nnd objects, it appeals to men and women who seek ndvnnccmont to nid in tho good work Hint will become .moro nnd more cll'ectivo with ovcrynddi- tionof strength directed to thonttain incut of objocts that constituto tho liighcst material, social and moral gain. This is tho mission, purpose, nnd object of tho Orange. To this its labors nro directed with conscious rectitudo of de sign encourngod nnd supported by achievements that point to fuller real ization of good in which nil may shnro nil who strivo for good, whether within tho membership or not, for tho Grange docs not rostrict its bcnciiccnco to tho narrow limit of its own faithful work ers. Its members desiro most earnestly to cxtond tho field of usefulness, lieuco tho appeal to good mon nnd women to nid in tho work. This implies extended membership, for whatever benefits nro found must havo their eutircu in asso ciated oll'ort. Tho timo is favorablo now for firmer, closer and moro cllcctivo organization that will load to groater good. Kx. Honesty tn tbe Oranco. Tho Husbandman, in its "Grnngo Thought," says tho following to tho credit, of tiraugo principles : "Tho Grange, so far ns it deals with business, lias undovinting honesty of purpose It inculcates this principle, and nsks its mombers to observo tho highest standing of integrity in all transactions. It does not spurn small snvings, nor dues it sock to mako its mombora rich. It recognizes the bind ing forco of tho golden rule, henco its endeavors to impress on all its member ship obligations that it docs not create, but rather ncccpts, becnuso they nro right, nnd in thoir observnnco nugmeut tho happiness of all. In tho industry that ongagos tho attention of iu mem bers nnd receives thoir efforts constantly, there is nover large profit, and frugal living is a necessity. Dut it opposes nil that is sordid, henco its detestation of henrtless scramblo for riches when greed seizes upon tho just rewards of tho in dustry it represents, taking its proceeds through trick and dovico oflbnsivo to thoso whoso honest effort goes willingly to production of food nnd raiment, nnd blessing tho world as tho dispenser of good. It makes no protest against riches when it refuses to bo tithed in tho interest of schoniers who havo fattened upon tho products of labor to which its members nro bound by a docreo older than human laws and not less applica ble to mon and womon in other pur suits. Fanners know that they cannot get great riches, as measured by com mercial standards, through tho labor they must expend, nnd they know also that they need not sink into poverty if they protect their own rights. What tb ar&nxe Hu Done. Wherever tho Grange has taken root and flourished, reform in almost evory respect has followed. Intemperance is wholly unkno'Mi to tiny gathering of Granger", and when the teachings of the Grange pov il, profanity or coarbc nets nf iihy .nd is rare. Mombers of tho OrdiT. by being associated together, learn about each other and from oneh other. Engaged in tin- snnie pursuits, they have learned that their interests are identical nnd they can ill afford to be divided by tho imaginary lines of party politics. Instead of tho partisan liato which they formerly ontettnined for each other whore they differed in politics, neighbor now grasps tho hand of neighbor in tho fellowship of mutual help without the distinction nnd distrust that had before kept them npnrt ; real nnd substantial objects tako tho plnco of tho fictitious nnd petty ones, that nro profitable only to scheming politicians and adventurers. Union tnkes tho place of divisions cre ated mainly by designing men. Through tho instrumentality of tho Grnngo, tho condition of its members is improved nnd their -interests advanced, which is indeed n gnin to tho wholo country. . Tho small farmer who hnsbcon quick ened in tho Grnngo can no longer be cheated with tho clap-trap of politicians. Because ho happened. to bo pushed back on somo littlo farm, working for dear lifo nnd tho support of his littlo family, thcro is no reason why ho should be denied recognition in tho outside world except as n tox-payor. Ho may bo will ing to work nnd deny himself many luxuries, even sufficient sleep, but if he is still so blindly devoted to party Hint ho is willing Government shall rob him of half of all ho earns nud leave him without the means of educating his family or giving them nny of tho privi leges that make life worth living, ho is worso than an infidel. Ex. POULTRY NOTES. Do not keep geese, ducks or turkeys in tho same house with chickens, nor on tho same run, if you can avoid it. Tho wings of turkeys, geese nnd chickens nro good to wash and clean windows, as they leave no dust nor lint, ns cloth. Turkeys mo great foragers, and will gather thoir ontiro food from tho fields during tho summer, at tho same timo destroying myriads of bugs, grasshop pers, worms, etc., that prey upon the crops. A cabbage, chopped fine, is excellent grcon food for fowls. So nro onions. Theso vegctnblcs can always bo procured iu winter. Clover hay, finely cut, is also excellent. It may bo fed dry, or steeped nnd mixed with tho soft food of poul try. An experienced poultry dealer gives ns his opinion that incubator chickens aro decidedly inferior to thoso raised in tho natural way. H hns n pale, sickly, unnatural npponrnnce. The flesh is soft like Eputty. Thoy lack keeping quality when dressed and placed on tho market, nud will not command the highest prico. How does this coincide with tho exporienco of others? If ono must kcop n great numbor of hens, let them bo kept in scparato flocks and so far apart that they will not unite. Tho houses need not bo largo nor ex pensive, but n yard will not bo necessa ry to shield them from foxes, skunks, hawks, rats, otc. They can bo let out to forago n portion of tho day, nnd after being called in again tho houses nnd ynrdB carefully closed at night. This takes timo and pationco, nnd nny neg lect means loss iu tho hen business. Peafowls nro ornamental, excellent for the table, but aro slow in reaching maturity, and tho hen soldom lays be foro sbo is two years old. Tho chicks, however, grow rapidly nt first, but ns thoy begin to feather almost nt tho start of life, they rcqniro frequont feeding or thoy will perish. They soon begin to fly and roost on tho highest positions they enn find. Tho hens lay from ten to twenty eggs, nccording to ago and trcntmont. Tho young chicks slioulJ bo fed the same ns young turkoys, but meat, finely chopped, should bo givon threo times n week. Tho malo i a quar rolsomo bird in tlfo barnyard, and often makes short work of young chicks. They aro moro ornnmontnl than profita ble, though tail feathers may bo pulled for salo as soon ns tho molting season begins. A Fine Farm tor Sale. Wo havo had placed in our hands for sale a choico furm highly improved, about four miles south of Salem. Tho placo contains 120 acres, all of which is cleared. There is a growing crop of 62 acres, consisting of barloy and wheat. There are good buildings and an orchard, This placo yielded thirty bushels of wheat per acre last year. Apply soon and obtain a bargain. Price $35 per acre. tf A good grooming is ns refreshing to n horn' as a b.u li is to a man. TLe Qreatcst study of Mankind is Man.
