WfV MhJTTE LARMtiK: SALEM, OREGON, NOVEMBER 26, 1886 Jmiltrii. OEO. D. GOODIIUK, KII1TOK. POULTRY NOTES. Ono duck will coustimo ns inucli food w two ordinary liens. Tlio mulo pigoou lidpt its mate in building tho nest for tlio young. Toutcr pigeons inlluto tboir crops with nir; many of our agricultural editors in Into with gas and scientific farming. Somo boys stulo somo of our china neat eggs from tho lions nests tho other day. After tho boys cook tho eggs they will plcaso roturn us tho sholls, they enn keep tho kernals and wo wont say any thing about it. Wo saw tho past week large quantities of fowls selling at two dollnrs mid twen ty-five cents per dozen. No person can ra?BO fowls to maturity for such figures; hotter keep tho chickons at homo and apply tho hutchot, raid cat tho last ono yourself. Tho steward of the insano asylum is buying good laying hens nt two dollars and fifty conts per dozen for tbo purposo of stocking thoir chicken yards lately built. Wo asked tho stoward if ho was not buying cheap. Said ho, yes. I havo boughtchickens that I bollovo have cost double- that prico to raiso them. Tho Vidotto has shod its old coat of feathers and took on n now one. It is now ft full Hedged gobbler and struts around in tho domestic fields of plenty. Its editor is u game old rooster and is ablo to spur equal to tho finest Georgia Whito Pile. A little girl, tho daughter of n gnntlo man who is in tho fino poultry busi ness, wiih visiting our villngo last week. While hero ono day her uncle naked her how hor papa's chickens were gotting along Uih winter. Sho said, "Ulaino dot his comb froze, St. John wo killed, and Clovoland is down nt tho burn wid tho hens." Unidentified Exchange. Wo saw nbout ton days ngo fivo Mon golian pheasants near our poultry yards. They did not seem wild so wo scattered feed whero wo thought thoy would get it, and now wo hnvo tho plcnsuro of see ing thorn almost ovory morning. Wo judgo thoy wcro about two-thirds grown us their tails wcro quito long. Wo nay to ovory poultrymnn and far mer, raiso hotter fowls and loss of thorn, then if you can't got your prico keop them and kill for your own ueo whnt you do not want for laying. Wo know ono thing, when a full grown Plymouth Hock is sold for loss than seventy conts, or a Brown Leghorn for Icbs than fifty conts, tho party raising them is losing monoy. Fino fcathors, symctry, station, car- ringo and general bonuty, has nothing to do with tho intrinsic valuo of a fowl ; it docs not niako thorn lay any moro eggs, nor mako any moro flesh, neither do all theso fino points mako them any better brccdors as to usefulness. Not withstanding all this being known, a person selecting a fowl will always tnko tho fancy points at doublo tho prico, and herein lies tho success of tho fancy poul try brcodor. Tho ono who produces tho most fino fcathors is always at tho head. gg. When tho writor sees barrels nnd barrels of eastern eggs arriving hero by almost ovory train, tho world doesn't look as good ns it should. Tho editor of tho llurnl Spirit knows from his own experiment that Orecon, nnd perhaps Washington, is as good as can bo found to grow eggs. If wo had never been engaged in tho business, wo would not writo so positive. But wo aro not mis takon. It is all a don't caro spirit. Any man or woman who will givo proper attention to tho breeding nnd caro of fowls can mako money. Why may wo not ask tho producers to systematize tho poultry nnd egg business. Rural Spirit. . Yos, friend Baker, it hurts us to bco barrels and barrels of eggs shipped from tho city of Portland to San Francisco and other point. Thoy aro bought up from tho farmers and poultrymen at from eight to ton cents per dozen, during that part of tho season that they can bo produced. Bought up too, in trado nnd truck from tho country grocorymen, at from twenty to thirty nnd sometimes ono hundred per ccut. profit on theso articles to tho dealer. It pains us worso to think those eggs aro shipped away to San Francisco whon they should bo packed in Port land by an egg packing firm, and there kept for winter use. Dooa not tho edi tor of tho Spirit know that all those eggs shipped from tho East here aro nothing moro than lime packed eggs; 4 then if so, why tiy to creato tho im presfion that n ic all the farmer's fault, that thpy an- not producing. Does tho Spirit bJlii w th.it tho Yankoo Kingdom havo got hens down to so lino a point that they lay each an egg threo hundred and sixty-livo days in ono year. Wo know Oiogon is u good poultry country and that tho farmers aro producing enough eggs for homo demand if thoy aro kept at home. If tho Portland dealers ship tho surplus of eggs bought up by them in My and Juno to other points, in place of packing thorn, it' is not tho farmer's fault if Portland gets out of eggs. Any one with any ordi nary chicken Eonco knows that eggs nt this boason of tho year aio only pro duced in limited quantities. Hens lay moro eggs lioro iu tho winter season than anywhoro in tho Eastern Statos. Tho egg dealers in tho East have learned to supply the doflcioncy of the wintor months by packing in tho spring and early summer when tho fowls arc doing doublo duty and tho prico of eggs very low. This system should bo intro duced in Portland, and tho "barrels nnd barrels" of lime packed eggs that conio from tho East would rapidly diminish. It rests with tho doalorsto systomizo tho egg business, not tho farmors of Ore gon. As to tho poultry, tho only way wo know of to systcmizo that, is for every farmer to quit selling dozen after dozon of chickens nt two dollars, nnd oat them hlmBolf. Tho producer will mako monoy, nnd savo monoy by so doing, nnd that is tho main point with us. Prohibition Ecgs. A casoof oggs was accidentally tipped olF of a dray in Hoston the othor day and some broke. It was then discov ered that tho eggs wcro of roughened porcelain and contained whisky, each having in it a "good square drink," which had been filled in by a holo in tho big ond of tho egg, tho npcrturo being nfterwnrds plugged nnd chalked ovor. Thero wcro six cases or forty-nino dozon oach in tho load, and woro consigned to hotels i:t Newport and Narragansctt Pier, It. I. Did Not Like Women Customers. "I hato women customers," replied n saleswoman in a dry goods store. She had been asked plum ply whether sho preform! waiting on men, and this was tho prompt answor. "Why do you pre for men?" "BccanBO thoy know what thoy want, and do not keep you stand ing an hour whilo thoy fumblo over and rumplo up tho goods on tho counter. Why, only to-dny I wns showing n lady blnck stockings. Of courso thoy wcro nil tho sumo sizo nnd quality, yot sho dragged ovory pair out of that box nnd then wanted to boo moro. I hnnded down two moro boxes, just liko this one, and then sho askod if wo had nny more. I told hor no, nnd then sho said I might wrap up ono pair for hor. Tho lady next to mo mado nino different sales to gontlomon whilo I was fooling with this woman. I am going to try to get a placo in n hardwaro store, or somoplaco whoro womon do not havo to deal with women." rittsburg Dispatch. STOCK FARM FOR SALE. A 0 oo a Opportunity to Buy a. Co-operation Sb ono of the fundnmcii' tnl principles of tho Grnngc. Thero is eo much said and written about "finan cial co-operation," o much timo and thought dovotcd to cc-oporativo associa tions and co-opcrativo stores, that thero is somo danger that tho scopo and mean ing of tho word and tho theory that it expresses may bo temporarily lost sight of. Co-oporntion means operating to gether for nny object ; and inasmuch as all the objects of tho Grango nro landa bio, and as tho word hns been adopted by tho Grnngc, it mny, for our purpose, bo defined ns tho acting or operating to gether of Patrona for any laudnblo pur pose. Evory object aimed nt by tho Grange mny bo moro suroly attained by thus noting thnn by pulling and working ovoryono in his own way, if, in deed, thoy can bo nt nil or ever nccom plished by individual effort, howovor persistently and enthusiastically pur suod. Then it follows that co-opnrntion should govern tho Order in nil its work. That brothers nnd sisters should net in concert, bo of ono mind, or in fnrmor phrnso, "pull together," not eec-snw liko balky horses. Tho Master mny bo n strong horso, n whceMiorso or lender, but if tho reel of tho team wait for him to move tho load, they will not get out of tho mire. All tho officers of tlio Grango mny bo truo pullers, hut if added to tho load, they hnvo to pull all tho rest of tho team nnd eomo of them not only not pulling nt nil, but throwing thoir weight against tho breeching, then tho load is apt to stick nnd sink deeper in the mire. "A long pull, n strong pull nnd n pull nil togcthor" will not fail to mako tho wheels turn. Thero is not nn object sought by tho Grango but enn bo obtained by co-oper-ntion. Tho farmors of tho country nro with tho Grangers, for their interests nro identical. All classes of laboring men nro with them ; tho houest people, what ovor bo their occupation, nro with them ; nnd with all theso for us, who can utand against us? Tlioeo who livo by tho spoils of business or politics ; those who think that laws should only "protect thoso who havo something to protect j" that penal statutes do not apply to those who cnnjcontroln capital of .$10,000; that producers nro lambs to bo Hhorn by sharpers, all of them combined mako but a handful nnd could not stand bo foro the Grango nnd hor nllioj, actuated nnd unitod by co oporation.
