Sleep.
Tho old saying in regard to sleep,
"nino hours nro enough for a fool," has
frightoned many peoplo from taking a
rest that was nocessnry to them. "Na
turo takes fivo, custom soven, laziness
niiio and wickednoss elcvon," is wrong
in nt least two of its assertions. Thero
aro very fow instances in which naturo
docs not demand inoro than fivo hours
sleep. It is truo that sleeping, liko eat
ing, is very much n matter of habit, and
you may train yourself to dispenso with
moro than fivo hours slocp, as you may
omit tho third moal of tho day. How
long you will fiourish under this regi
mon will dopond upon tho strength of
your constitution. You may faro like
tho man's horse, who, when it had bo
como reduced to a diet of ono straw a
day, in tho most ungrateful manner
died on his hands. A porson may need
nino hours sleep out of tho twenty-four
without being either lazy or foolish. In
deed ho is a' wiso man if, feeling that ho
requires them, ho is sensible enough to
tako them. Gootho, whon performing
his greatest literary feats, took nino
hours sleep. A full grown adult in a
healthy condition will seldom require
moro than eight. If, however, bo dis
covers that ho is not sufficiently re
freshed by eight hours he should tako
more. It is a pretty safe rulo to sleep
as long as you aro sleepy. "Thero are
people," says a writer, "who aro wiso
enough to eat when they aro hungry,
bat who have never attained that higher
degree of wisdom to sleep whon they are
sleepy." Unless you nro a very lazy per
son indeed, you ate not likely to take
more than your constitution requires,
for, of course, dawdling in bod is not
sleeping. By shortening tho neccsBory
hours for sleep yu may bring upon
yourself "insomnia." Thero nro scion
title writers on tbo subject who claim
that tho best remedy for this is to learn
to sleep in day time. This is very well
whero for some cause, work, watching,
or pleasure, you may have failed to get
your needed sleep for a night or two.
There is undoubtedly a virtue in riaps,
ovou short ones, and tho art of napping
in the daytime, although I could never
acquire it, is a desirable one, and liko
most arts, is matter of practice. Still,
it is a bad practice to get into tho habit
of turning night into day, and if you aro
not kept awoke by care and illness, but
merely havo lain awako becauso you
could not sleep, I should recommend
you to light the consequent drowsiness
tho next day, in order that you may, if
possible, resume- your natural rest ot
night. Sleeplessness is generally the
result of an uufortuuato habit of "think
ing," gonorally on unpleasant subjects,
nftor ono has retired for the night. Dr.
Frank Hamilton, a grent physician and
n wiso man, said : "Gloomy thoughts
provent Bleep. The poor and unfortu
nate magnify nnd incrcaso their misfor
tune by too much thinking. 'Blessed bo
ho who invented slccpl' but thrice
blessed bo ho who shall invent n euro for
thinking 1"
