A MYSTERY.

And she gathered all stlnglcss laughter,
All lovts that wero listing and aure,

All wealth (hat wis wingless and pure;

All thnrnlrss and fidfliss (lowers ;
Hho gathored the faint life and tar light
Of panplcis and perfect hours ;
She gathered all glimpses olyiian

All hopes that held to fruition;
All talent that won to the goal,
All wisdom that) never hud siddcnrd,
All truths that never had lied,
All ambition that never had maddened,
All beauty that satisfied.
And sho flung tlicin all, all in her measure,
Ilutthoy nothing outbalanced tho pain;
And sho smh I must add yot a treasure.,
Tho keenest and best in rny train.

Then sho readied up and to merciful heaven

habit of gazing nt some object nnd
wrinkling lii.H brow before be commences,
but' when ho docs epeok it is in tho
most unconventional manner.
From eight till nine o'clock in tho
evening tho Princo remain with his
family nnd then works alone, often
until ono o'clock nt night. During
thoso nightly Htudies his inseparable
companions nro a long smoking pipe
nnd a bumper filled with beer, of which
ho drinks copiously. Kegs of tho
brown liquid nro frequently prosontod
lo him by somo of tho famed breweries
of Germany.

Many books and nrliclo.1 liavo been
written on tho political career of Ger

far no ono has undertaken to give a de

Prince HlHiimrck ranks among thoso
great men who differ widely in their
family life from that exterior or olllcial
life upon which thu geuoral publia
bason iU ontlmitto of ohnractor. Ho
whom wo only know as an imporious
statesman mid diplomatist, as tho "man
of blood and iron," this very mimo man
is at homo a good householder ot tho
old I'omoraniau stylo, which is basod
upon thu principles of fidelity to "God,
King and Fatherland," of true and
tender caro for family and servants, of
liolp to uoighlKirs, of bolief in Bimplo
but Hubstantial meals, and recreation by
means ot plenty of oxerciso in tho open
air. Knpecially when at ono of his
throw country seats Friedrinhsruh,
Varolii or Sohoenhuuson ho really livos
liko a nobleman of tho olden time.
Kvory detail pertaining to bin estates he
oversees himself, puyine; particular at
teutiou even to the ooirifort of his farm
hands. In all thu villages surrounding
'nr,in and l-'riedriulmrtih, whero ho
prefers to dwell, ho is likod by poor and
rich, and whuiiever he passes tho chil
dren will gn'ot him with "(Jtiten tag,
llorr llioiiiaiek."
II is mode of living, ns is well known,
J peculiar. Ho does not rico earlier
than uiuo o'clock, and then, after taking
a cup of collco, he looks over his mail.
Should tho weather bo favorable ho
takes a walk with his family about
eleven o'clock if in Herlin, through
his and hi neighbors' maguillceut
garden, which adjoin tho pubho park
(Tlucrgaitcu), and if at one of IiIh
country reals, to his beloved foicsts or
to the near llclds. On the.o promenades
ho wears a large, broad brimmed felt
hat and cauics a heavy cane.
After lunch he devotes se end hours
lo tho tillairx of State. Then, while
giving frequent instructions to his m
relury, he lither walks up and down tho
mom or hit- at his writing desk playing
with hie. quill pen, from the iinmeino
sue of which the name "ItiMiinrck poo"
is do uvod.
Kxaetly nt the o'clock ho hits down to
dinner, which generally lasts two ami
often thieo hours. After the KnglLsh
tyle. every dinner contains llsh, which
dish the I'lince likes very much and of.
illicit he cats luwttlly. Hois one of
thote who lirmly beliee in the old
theory that tho phosphoric substance
contained in tUh contributes to the
restoration of tho brain mass, lie
generally has a ery good appetite,
Kvery day- eomo diplomatic or military
men or friends dine with hiiu, even if ho
should stay at his country teat, Ynrzin,
near Schl.iwe, which is situated far off
in Lower I'onu'ntniu, at somo consider
ablu distance from all largo cities. When
lining tho Trinco is almost always in
usual summer sojourn at Kifsiugcn.
Several timed during late years, whilu
nnder enrfj -of - Dr. Hchwonnlngor, of
Munich, ho had to make temporary ex
coptions. Dr. Schwcnningcr, n young,
ambitious physician, 1i3 found in tho
old Chancellor n willing and hopeful
pationt for bis nowly discovered system,
Tho treatment which Dr. Schwonningor
energetically pursues with his pntionts
is an ontiroly chnnged diot, substituting
dno consisting of nothing but milk and
bread. This causes emaciation, nnd it
is said that its clTeotH hnvo roliovcd the
Princo eovcrnl timos from ecvoro nou
rnlgio pains and other kinds of sickness,
As ho onco iu n while enforces this
treatment upon hlmsolf, ho has, as n
consequence, lost consldorably in weight.
It has been his custom to hnvo himself
weighed at Kissingon whonovor in
snmmor ho spends a few weeks at theso
springs. In 1871 ho woighed 207
pounds; 1870, 210; 1877, 2U0; 1878,
81.1; 1870,2-17; 18S0, 237; 1882, 21)2;
18811, 202, nnd hut year 201 pounds,
Tho lowest point ho ovor reached in
weight was 105 pounds. This was three
yoars ago, when Dr. Schwcnnlngor for
tho first time treated him according to
tho new system.
Regarding tho health of tho Princo
from timo to time tho most contradictory
rumors aro circulated. Somo cay tho
onco gigantic figure of tho mnn has
fallon away, nnd trncos of his mnny
maladies, especially of sovoro attacks
of neuralgia and jnumlico, nro marked
deeply in his countenance, whilo other
a'porbt assure tho public that tho "Iron
Ohancoller" looks a little worn, but
nevertheless honlthy. In n letter from
Hamburg, rccoived iccently by a Urook
lyn gentleman, this report i somewhat
confirmed. Tho writer of tho letter,
who has lately hcoii tho Princo at his
country sent, Priedrichsruh, givos the
following report : ''Princo UUmnrck's
faco is thinner than some four yoars ngo,
wlmn I saw him last. That tho Prince
wears spectacles was entirely new to
me, but I am told that ho uses them
as little as possible Ho is now in his
sovonty-llrct yenr, nnd it is only natural
that his eyes should hnvo become weak
and lost their lustre. Hut, although ho
walkvdowly and heavily, ho carries his
head erect. Any ono seeing him must
confer that ho, like many men of his
age, htill PO3S0S.-CH great physical
powor."
Although his general appearancu is
well known through pictures of every
kind, wo Boloct a fow characteristic
points for description. His features
wero never cither handsome or ugly,
but being very remnrknble nro not
easily forgotten if onco been. In his
younger days, his biographers say, his
face fcwas strikingly clear and full of
cheerfulness, even to gayety. Hut for
many years it has lieen earnest, almost
solemn, with an expression of most
indomitable energy and hardiness. Ho
neath the lwld forehead his large, pro
jecting blue eyes do not look about with
the vivacity of a young man, but turn
quietly from one object to another. His
eyes are -o penetrating that many ex
perience a disagreeable feeling upon
meeting them. His broad forehead and
his remarkably long and buhy eyebrows
heighten his t-trongly marked features,
which often appear harsh. His largo
and heavy tlguro does not appear
clunky, as every part is well propor
tioned the large, round head, the big
neck, the broad shoulders and the stout
limbs.
For the safety of his jeron the
Prince is,idyays surrounded by n num
ber of detectives, nnd besides ho keeps
n dog, tho famous "Hoiehshund," called
Tyras. It is a largo, well fed Danish
hound of blackish color, On his way
to Herlin or Kisoingen ha is generally
accompanied by eight detectives, under
the command of a superior officer,
and whenever ho remains anywhere for
any length of time moro detectives aro
added tq them. This may scorn a disa
greoablo fact, but constant caution is
absolutely necessary, as experienco has
aught that tboro nrc defpernto charac
ters who aro only waiting for nn oppor
tunity to "do away" with him.
Princo Dismarck's immense success
as n statesman has not only bestowed
upon him high rank and dignities, but
it has also mndo him ono of tho greatest
land ownors in Germany. When ho
commenced his career as tho son of a
simplo country nobleman ho was con
stantly in pecuninry embarrassment.
Tho country scut SchoouhnuBcu, which
ho inherited from his father, had been
for n long timo encumbered with debts,
and tho young diplomat, who was al
most always in need of money, was
compelled to seek for aid. At that
timo ho found a helping hand in the
Jlcrlin financier Dleichroedor, who,
through Princo Bismarck's influonco, is
now a nobleman nnd writes his nnmo
"Von Bloichroedor." It is said that
Herr Dleiohrocdcr, Bomo forty years ago,
foresaw a groat tuturo in tho Bimplo
"Junker" ptto v. Bismarck Schoon
hausen. They hnvo been on tho most
iutimato torms over since, nnd there
was a timo when tho financier supplied
tho Ghancollor with tho finest brands of
cigars and tho Princoss, during many a
winter eooson, with tho most oxquisito
bouquota of natural llowers, Tho Prin
cess often romarkod that her husband
owod much to llorr v Meichroodor, and
it is supposed that in oxchnngo for tho
sorvicoa rondorcd him tho mighty Chnu
cellor was not tardy with euoh informa
tion as tho banker could use to his
financial advantaco. This intimato
connection botweon tho Chancellor and
tho rival of tho firm of ltothsohild
ofton gavo occasion to tho political ene
mies of tho Uhancollor to lay suspicion
upon him; but tho accusations wero of
no avail, as ovidonco never could bo pro
duced to subuuutiuto them,
Princo Dismarck's affection for his
wifo and children is great, and is ropnid
by thoir caro and love. Thoy consider
ovorybody a personal onomy who
causes him trouulo or vexation. When
ho is sick, as was so very often tho case
during recent years, thoy nnrso him
with untiring patience, and in his hours
of ulcasuro they heartily join with him.
Should any visitor succeed in entertain
ing him to such a degree 'as to draw
from him a laugh tho family will show
their gratitudo by profuso thanks.
During his whole lifo tho Princo has
shown tho most hnprcssivo ovidonco of
lovo and gallant tenderness toward his
wife, thu Princoss. Timo could not
chango this feeling. Everybody inti
mately acquainted with tho Dlsmarck
family praisos tho kind nnd honorable
relations which exist between tho Princo
and tho Princess. This is also amply
provod by many published letters which
tho Princo has writton her whenover he
was away irom noino in omco or on a
mission, and further by tho noticeable
fact that not ovon ono of his numerous
deadly enemies has ever attempted to
darken his charnctor as a husuanu anil
n father.
Tho Princess, n sistor of tho Prussian
Minister von Puttkamer, is said to have
been a beauty in hor youngordays. She
is now in her sixty-second year, but
looks much older than sho roally is.
Sho is of slender figure and of hardy
but noble features. Hor manners aro
vory amiable. Karely does a lady of
high rank dress as plainly ns tho Prin
cess Dismurck. Sho also is regardod ns
a model of a German housokecpor. In
socioty sho is reserved and modest. She
is a good Christian but not a bicrot, and
on Sundays sho generally attends tho
church services. Tho Princo often re
marks : ".She is tho ono who made mo
what I am."
Of his three childron Princo Bismarck
pets his daughter most, and ho generally
cnlls her "Meino Mario." Sho resem
bles him ery much, only that her
features exhibit kindness and mildness.
Whoovor has been her must confess
that her whole appcuruueo is charming.
She is married to Count llautzow, who
Is a kind of assistant to the Prince.
Tho Countess is an excellent pianist,
and her father loves to listen to her
for hours, especially when peaforming
earnest or sentimontnl airs. Sho has
made the Princo several times a "grand
father.'" Now York Herald.
Unnecessary Misery.
Probably ns much misery comes from
coustjpation lis from any derangement
of tho'functidns of tho body, and it is
difficult to ciiro, for. tho reason that no
dno likes to fnko tho mctlieino usually
proscribed. lI.VMUtmo' Fios word pre
