WILLX'-MXE tfAtaialt: SALEM, OKEGOA, NOVEMBER S, 18SG ittltrg. OEO. D. GOODHUE, EDITOR. IN CHARGE AOAW. With this number of the Wiuameete Fakmer wo ngnin ultimo the oilitorship of tho poultry department. Our busi ness is ouch during tho summer months wo hnvo not tho timo to dovoto in writ ing, lipnco tho nbscneo of tho ttoiiltry editor of tho Farmer for tho pnst few months. During tho present winter months wo slmll try to mnko tho poul try department more interesting Hum over. Wo usk of our poultry fiionds to givo us their viows nml their e.xporionco during tho pust season. Tho poultry columiiB nro ojjen to nil. Friends, let us hear from you. I) n't liueitnto for fear you citnnot write good enough or ubo good grammar. It is your ideas and your oxporionco wo want. POULTRY NOTES. Wo shall givo a fair illustration of tho lloso Comb Drown Leghorn to our many renders, nccompaniod with n short his tory of tho breed. About forty times n wcok wo nro risked which is tho host breed of fowl? Tho only answer we enn givo is, choosoyour fancy, tnko caro of thorn and you have tho best. Fanciora and nil poultrymcn report thoir fowls in good condition whllo go ing through tho moulting period Tho weather having been very fnvornblo this fall, wo may soon look forplonty of eggs. It may soom to an outsider that tho breeding of poultry is nicro child'H piny, unworthy of serious nttcntion, but n practical ncquaintnnco with tho sub ject soon teaches tho fancier difTorout. Absolute perfection in any variety of fowls is almost an impossibility. Tho littlo Drown Leghorn which is continually up to tho "scratch" and al ways "Bholling out" eggs, is ngnin in hor glory. Thoro nro moro sales and moro calls for thorn now than any othor breed of fowls. "Truth crushed to earth will riso ngnin." A short timo ago wo rccoivnd a notico that a party whom wo sent egg to tho past soason, hnd a successful hatch, get ting thirteen chicks from thirtcon eggs, whilo another neighbor from tho samo shipmont and pumo numbor of eggs only got six. Truth rovonlod tho fact that on rocoiving tho oggs tho party held them up to his oars and shook them lively, supposing by so doing ho was testing thoir genuineness. I Icro is a picco of stupidity and ignoranro wo havo seldom heard of. Such a blinking up as this would certainly brake tho yolk of any ogg nnd dostroy its vitality. Tho great wondor to us is this poung chap got n singlo chick, and wo hopo that if ho comes ncrosa this that it will learn him n Iosson that he will novcr forget. Tho Poultry Exhibit. Tho poultry exhibit nt tho Stato Fair was not what it ought to havo been in point of number, though as to quality it was superior to Hint of last year. Out sido of Marion nnd Linn counties thcro was nothing. Wo know of many who could havo exhibited, but rather by pro- judico or by tho fuiluro of tho society to ofl'or buitablo premiums, they kopt thoir fowls nt homo. Wo munt remember ono thing, that tho soeioty is loaded with a heavy debt, and so long as tho pcoplo will kick and leave tho Fair with scant exhibits, just that much longer will it tako tho 60cioty to clear its debts. Each poultry man, each stock man, nnd nil, should take it upon thcuuolvcs that they nro moro or less indobted to tho society. That in thorn lays tho power to lift tho present incumbrances by placing on exhibit what ho or she has in tho most attractivo form. This for ever kickiug against tho manngoment is all wrong. If tho present board of managers cannot pull tho Stato Agri cultural Soeioty through if. will bo tho peoplo's fault. Wo havo always con tended that tho Stato Fair was tho place for tho poultry fancier to exhibit, and timo has not changed our mind. This Stato cannot support n poultry show unless connected with other depig ments. Wo hopo another year to eco a better poultry display at tho Stato Fair. Utility and Bsauty. Wlion we como to look at tho mattor of fowl keeping from a common sense point of view, wo nro lorrcu to admit that tendency among many of our fan ciers is to 6acrifico valuable economic quolitio3 of their fowls for beauty and fancy points. Whilo we all admire tho beauty of coloring and form, the va ried tints of plumage, tho exquisite pen- ciling, tho graceful and commanding cnrmigo of car improved breeds, the great bulk of our peoplo prefer points of usefulness nntl look to tho timo when tho main pintit from our poultry will bo in tho numbor of eggs and quality of flesh thoy givo us. In tho poultry business tho egg is of moro importanco to the people than the beauty of plumogo or fancy points in our fowls, but nt tho samo timo wo should not to underrate tho valuo of beauty and tho gratification It affords to thoso whoso tastes lead thorn to prefer fancy points. In tho march of progress it should bo tho nim of tho breeder to improve thp ogg and ilosh producing qualities of his fowls as well as thoso of beauty and fancy points. Wo can do theso things by keeping a closo account of tho eggs that are laid by our ilocks, and by constantly breeding from the best layors and carefully selecting their progeny ngnin, wo got on tho right course to increnso tho valuo of thoir ogg producing qualities. Tho same mot hod can bo followed to increnso tho vnlue of their llcsh, and whilo wo aro giving our best efforts toward utility, wo can by tho samo way of selection, improvo tho beauty and general nppcarnncc of our breeds. Poultry Monitor. Tho Qaloit Plan. Whalovor variety of fowls aro kept provision must bo made for thoir com fort, keeping and safety. In summer outsido conditions aro moro favorable, and less caro will sufllco if they have liborty. 13ut in tho fall and winter thoy need proper attention and good food to do well and como outin tho jprlngTin primo condition for laying and breeding. The breeding and management of good poultry stock pays well from the start, and is tho foundation of reliabili ty. Fortunato is tho fancier who aims at keeping nono but primo fowls, his success is assured beyond doubt. Hut there nro',' hundreds of beginners who build their hopes upon tho success of others, and bcliovo themselves compe tent and worthy of patronage as thoso who hnvo brod fowls for yearn. Tho safest plan for boginncis is to mako poultry kcoping a secondary pur suit, for in this way thcro will ho less depondonco, less disappointment and less caro to bothor thorn. Without losing much timo from their respective avocations, thoy can givo all nocded attention during tho hours of relaxation from business, and tho timo can bo prof itably spent in amusement nnd recrea tion. Poultry Monitor. Turlcoys. Tho Broiuo Turkey is tho largest among tho varieties to bo selected for breeding purposes. If good strong stock is selected turkey raising is not risky, but on tho contrary profitable A young Dronzo gobbler running with fivo or six two-year-old hens will add a considera ble to tho weight of each poult hatched tho first year, whilo young turkeys will bo stronger and hardier by tho cross, besides bringing grentor remuneration to thoir owner when mnrkotcd. Tho Dronzo nro uniformly beautiful in plumngo and heavier than birds raised from common stock. Tho in creased cost of tho breeding is paid for in tho larger nvcrago weight of tho tur koys slaughtered for tho market at Thanksgiving nnd Christmas. Too much cannot be said in regard to this point, nnd it is of tho first importnnco that tho parent stock should bo strong, healthy and of good size Poultry Monitor. Shoep Pastures Somo of tho disappointments and failures in keeping shoep aro duo to tho prevailing, but mistaken idea that sheep can live nnd do well without good food. "Turn them into tho waeto fields and lot them eat tho briers nnd thorns nnd weeds," is tho frequent ndvico of writers who nover kept n sheep. Ono might ns well Eay that a countryman might do well in a city by living off the garbago barrols and heaps in waste places. It is all very well for a fnrmcr to turn a few sheep into a rough, negloctod field, and let them trim down tho briors nnd weeds, if ho will then provido them with sufficient good food. In this way tho folding of sheep upon an old field may bo turned to good account. Hut for regular business, ono cannot hopo to raiso sheep in thi3 way. A good pasturo, roots for winter feoding, well made clover hay and careful attention and management aro essential to success. Rural Canadian.
