The balanco of tho party endeavorod to bring the body to tho vnlloy, but decom position s?t in and they had to bury him. Something about Game Laws. Avjisvillk, Oct. 30, 1880. Editor Willamette Fnrmen Previous to an election, whon tho can didates for positions of legislative honor and trust como around among thoso "dear people," tho "hard-fisted farmors who aro anchored to tho soil," to solicit their votes, it is generally supposed that when elected, and in logiplativo capacity assembled, that tlioy will pay eomo at tention to tho interests of this class of their constituency. But when it comos to making tho gamo laws, tho farmer, who raises tho game, finds that tho city sporting clubs constitute tho "people," so far as tho farmer is concerned, and that ho is counted out) and that gamo laws aro mado, not to protect game, but to accommodate tho city shootist. Do not understand mo as charging tho legisla tor with wilfully pandering to tho city sporting clubs. It is very probable that through his ignorance of natural history tho habits and manners of gamo aro moro or less unknown to him, and ho is misled by tho statements of sportsmen as ignorant of tho subject aB himself. And thus tho legislator, all unwittingly perhaps, docs tho farmer a positivo in jury whilo providing for tho sport of n lot of other fellows. Still, tho farmer has somo protection from tho hordes of pilfering ticspassors who roam his woods and fields with dogs and guns, through tho trespass law. lint this law is very unsatisfactory. It re quires tho posting of notices, which brings tho party availing himself of what little protection this law affords conspicuously to tho notice of tho shootist, theroby engendering antag onism, and sometimes bickering, as tho shootist appears to regard tho farmor as having no rights in tho matter, which ho is bound to rospect, and an assertion of right by tho farmer is regarded as an impudonco which calls for resentment on tho part of tho shootist. Now tho incoming Legislature can romedy this ovil very easily by a law that, whilo it furnishes every facility and accommodation to tho sporting man that is a man, it will a', tho samo timo protect tho farmor from what is now a most annoying nuisance, and fast bo coming moro so. And that is, to mako all wild birds, animals, and fishes, ex cept tho known noxious kinds, tho prop erty of tho party on whoso land tho samo may bo found, and givo tho samo protection against tho killing, tnking, injury or disturbance, as in tho caso of domostio fowls, so long as thoy remain on his land. This will sottlo tho matter, and tho farmer can then protect himself or not, as ho chooses. Then all other gamo laws should be repealed. This would dispose of the Japaneso pheasant, and Oregon would bo spared tho expensivo lesson of tho English sparrow to tho Atlantic States. Tho introduction, and protection by tho Legislature, of tho Japancso pheas ant is u big mistake, and tho farmers of Oregon had as well movo to bo rid of a nuisanco now as to wait until it becomes well nigh impossible. He will drive out our own indiginous varieties, which aro moro useful and less injurious than him self; he will ravago grain-fields worse than tho digger squirrel; ho will eat fruit-buds in winter and spring, and will dovour fruits, especially berries, grapes and other small fruits, in their season. He is vigorous, alert and active, a great rambler, has an appetito liko a Kansas cyclone, and like the Shanghai chicken, "ho eats most anything ho can over haul." Tho solo object of introducing him hero is to furnish tho shootist with a moro desirabln gamo bird. If sporting men should introduce tho red fox here for tho sport of chasing him with hounds, would our legislators mako a special law to protect him from tho far mers, and would tho Stato exercise its "right of ominont domain" to permit fox-hunters to run with their horses and dogs through tho farmers' woods and fields, after him? Why not? Tho one is just as proper and consistent as tho other. If tho farmor is tho mud-sill of the body politic, it appears to me that it is for tho interest of tho superstructure to pay regard to tho welfare of its foun dation, and all laws antagonistic to tho fanner's interests, which aro solely for tho pleasure of non-producing classos, aro certainly founded in error and in justice.
