Tho Fnir was gotten up without pre moditntion, only ton dnyu notico being civon to tho public by tho Ynkima Ag riculturnl Association Hint "a two days Fnir would bo hold in Oliappnl's Hall, Yakima City." Thoro cortninly was ft very flno showing of tho products of tho country, n fair showing too, of its nvor ngo capacity, for thoro hntl been no pro- vlous knowlougo inai woum onauio in dividuals to sccuro oxtraordintiry speci mens. Tho Willametti: Faumhii was fortu- nnto to havo n rcportor at hand to lako notes of this initiative fair, held in tho center of a wido strotch of now country, ofsago brush and Band. ItsocmsBtrnnBO to n now comer to sco what is produced in this seemingly desert waste, with tho nid of irrigation, and often indeed, with out water, only with deep cultivation vegotntion thrives. Wo who aro acens tomed to n landscape of verduro can not soon look with favor on thoso bloak roiling hills, whero sweeps tho sand about and whoro only tops of yellow bunch grass vary tho groy monotony of color. Hdwovor, thoro is pnsu ami on' crgy up thcro, and though tho weather was not favorable thoro was a largo at tendance. Tho railroad brought in many pcoplo from n dietnnco at reduced rates. Thcro was considerable enthusiasm throughout tho country and much fino blood stock waB brought in. Even tho Indians woro interested iu tho whito man's show, and camo into tho city with their squaws, gay with bright nowblan kots just from hop picking. To Btrang ors theso wild Indians riding about formed a picturcsquo feature of tho day Tho ladies made it attructivo with tbinjrs useful and ornamontal. Art was represented, paintings, and hammerod brass, china painted, etc., somo curios wero exhibited, nnciont pottory, jowolry, etc. Tho success of tho Fair and tho inter est taken warrants tho association in making normancnt improvements. A raco track will bo iniprovod near tho con fluenco of tho Notches and Yakima riv ers, whero stock can bo easily unloadod from tho cars and noar accessibio water. A Curious Exhibit Tho Pacific Rural Press gives a lenghthy description of a fanciful exhibit of somo ambitious dry goods firm at tho lato Stato Fair at Saoramonto. This dry goods firm erected a castlo, 2(J by 30 feet, and 15 feet high. Tho framo was of lumbor, but so designed that it was apparently of goods in bulk ; tho illu sion was perfect; thsro worotowow, bat tlements and portals for entrances. Tho battlements of woolon cloths, muslins, quilts, towelings and sheetings in bolts j a huge chimnoy was composod of flan nol, pointed with whito tape; a hugo iiro placo was decorated with napkins, in colors; suits of armor abound, and weapons woro in tho room called tho armory. Heavy masonry was repre sented by dark gray cloth, lined off by whito braid altogether it was a most wonderful exhibit of architecture nnd illusion. There was an art gallery, a music room too, rooms in which people could sit and lounge. Except tho floors and rough framo everything was con structed of dry goods. It is hardly pos siblo to k'ivo a correct idoa of tho thing in our limited space, but it was too in genious an affair to omit altogether. Tho teries of readers now in uso in that Stato cost $1.05 against $2.90 for tho Apploton series, $3.10 for tho Swinton scries, .f 2.C0 for tho Bancroft series, and $2.50 for tho McGuffey Eeries. It will bo Been that tho scries prepared by tho Stato costs loss than half what tho other standards mentioned costs. This is an enormous saving to tho people of tho State, if the books are oqual iu merit to Eastern pub lications. Wli.it do our readers think of this? jjfoij $hq $ltiMrei. TO-MORROW AND YESTERDAY. It is hotter to lean toward to-morrow Than to ween over Suns that are set : Tho Future holtls hopo that wo borrow, lho fast only offers regret. From tho past wo can gain nn concession Qlt is voiceless and clothed liko the night) But tho far distant Hills of Progression Aro crowned with a glory ot Light. To-morrow's whito, beautiful pages Aro yours to writo on as you may; But with tho closed ledgers of Ages Aro Yesterday's leavts locked away. To tho Future lot NOW bo beholden, And not to a day that is gono ; Thcro was never a sunsot so golden But lovlicr still ts somo dawn. No recompense, no satisfaction, Reward thoso who seek for tho Past, But tho soul that is restless with action Will find all it longs for at Last. Ma II'. Wikox. OUR LETTER BOX. Whilo traveling on tho cars not long ago, nway in Eastern Oregon, wo hap pened to sit by a lady from Ilia. Wo hnd a very pleasant visit together, nnd got out of tho cars, togcthor with othor travelers, to visit Multnomah falls, whero fifteen minutes aro allowed, which was timo enough for tho swift footed and young to rush up to tho stoop mountain sido nnd cross tho rustic bridge, which is closo by tho road whero tho down coming water dashes into foam boforo it finally reachoe tho bed of tho creek. This fall of wator is very beautiful ir summor, but is oven more wiord and beautiful in winter, when the very sprny is frozen into fantastical shapes. Eastern tourists rush out to gazo upward, and many of them any that fnmous plnccs iu Europo aro eclipsed by our mountain sconcry. But to return. Wo told our friend thht it Bccmcd as if Ilin was a familiar name. It soon brought to mind ono of our graceful correspondents, and wo woro glad to find thnt our now acquaintance know almost all our young friends on Snnko river. Wo hopo somo timo to find it possiblo to got up thoro. Frequent trips to tho laud of sago-brush has given us n liking to tho country, whilo all othors who havo onco lived in thnt climate with to go back again. While tho ico was an inch thick on a pail of water left out doors up there, still wo did not feel cold until Portland was reached. Tho dry utmosphcre iu tho upper country during tho winter months is favorable to raising stock. A good letter from May comes, just whilo wo woro thinking about her. Wo shall havo to writo to her and tell how it camo that it should bo bo. Wo nro u bit nshnmed, but must toll how it was. Only yestordny we, liko old "Aunt Cloe," in Undo Tom's Cabin, was having n "cleanin out timo," when, awny behind somo books in a hugo book-case, was a paekogo tied up nnd directed to May Parker. On oponing it, thoro wus tho book which wo had promised bo long ago, and which wo thought had lecn rocoived by her two years since Tho samo.dny wo opened a lettor from May asking nbout tho book. Was not thnt n coincidence? As for Whito Spanish chickens, wo think they aro not a distinct breed only n "sport." Wo onco sot a dozen puro Blnck Spanish cggt, and two ot thoso oggs brought porfoctly whilo fowls ono hen nnd ono rooster. Thoy had every characteristic of tho Spanish, but that hen often hatched blnck chicks. Wo think thcro is no fowl so good for eggs as tho Spnnish, yet as for table mo wo havo no doubt but that u big black crnnu would taste as woll. May sets a good oxamplo to our girls of tho Homo Circlo by getting breakfast for tho dear mothor who has sacrificed to much for her. Smilax cannot visit tho Circlo too ofton. Sho has givon ovor fO many topics to writo about. Not ono of our girls nnd boys but can writo after rending thoto questions. Wo hopo to linvo many letters after this. Fostkii, Or., Oct. 9, 1880. Editor Homo Circle; I expect that you think I have for gotten you all, but havo not. Cheer up boys and girls, do not forget tho corner so quick. All writo and fill tho corner with letters. I like to writo letters and also read them. Aunt Hetty, I saw a piece in tho Fakmeii that you wrote about your nieces and I liked it roal well. I think it is nico to help my mother in every way I can, bocauso sho took lots of pains with us when raising us from babyhood to young ladies and wo now ought to tako all tho work off from their hands that we can. I gener ally got up and cook breakfast and let mother sloop. Docs anyono know whoro thcro is white Spanish chickens raised, if they do will thoy plcaso lot mo know? I havo not kept any nccouut of tho chickons and eggs this year, although wo have sold n good many oggs. Aunt Hotty, I havo novor received thnt book yet for keeping account of tho chickens and eggs. I havo looked nnd looked for it, but it has not como yot nnd I thought I would remind you of it onco more. I will closo for this timo with good wishes for tho Farmer and tho writers to it. Yours truly, May Pakkku. Kditor Homo Circlo t Will you plonso grant to mo spaco enough to nsk tho littlo girls n few questions T Thanks, I know you would. Thon to commonco with. Will somo littlo girl plcnso toll mo n good rccipo for nico plain cako? Now bo Biiro you try it nnd know that it is really good. Next, will somo littlo girl tell mo whero our best oranges como from and how thoy grow! Will another ono bo kind enough to toll mo nbout tho most im portant thing thoy saw at tho Stato Fnir this year, with full particulars? And now, will somo littlo girl plcaso tell mo all bIio knows about tho lifo of poor Enoch Anion, and then I must hear how you all intend spending Thanks, giving day; toll mo when it is and why wo obforvo it? And can somo littlo girl tell nil nbout Helix, Oregon, giving n full description of it with a littlo of its history? Can some littlo girl toll mo Gcorgo Washington's ngo, nnd who ho wns? Ono littlo girl near mo says that ho chopped a cherry trco down, but was that nil ho over did? No, I think not, I think eomo littlo girl not fnr nway can sny BOtncthing else. And why is Autumn tho snddost timo in tho your, nnd yot tho most beautiful? What aro nature's teachings? Nature, of courso, has a groat many teachings, so only wish you to givo thorn their duo ot thought; then tell mo what you think nbout it. Pcrhapn you will think at first that those aro Billy questions, but givo them a littlo serious meditation nnd you will find thnt thoy contain a vast deal to fill our minds with. Nature ns n tenchor has no equal, nnd yot wo nlight tho greater portion of her Icbsoiih, which only causo thoso wo cannot slight to bo tho hnrdor for us. Is thcro n work more noblo than natures, nnd still Blighted ns much by us? Whnt painting inspires us with more grntoful idens than nn hour or bo of gazing nt nnd admiring tho beautiful autumn lcnvcs in tholr goldon nnd crimson coloring? Their lives nro such Hint their brightest days nro their last And is it so with us? Is tho average person tho happiest in tho decline of lifo. But thoro, I must not ho too sovoro a critic, m I will now nsk tho name, location and history ot tho oldost city in tho Unitod Suitos? Theso questions, my denr littlo friends mny nt first seem n littlo hard and yot thoro is nothing too hard for you to study up n whilo. In nnswering nny of tho qucs lions nftcr you havo finished all you can say nlxnit them sign your name, giving ago and address in full. Head good literature. I mean good scnsiblo reading matter, not tho ehcap, trashy novels nnd mugazines thnt nro continually thrust before us. Givo us something that wo will profit by leading nnd something that will servo ns food for the mind, to niiiuso and instruct. For mngazinos tako soinothing on tho stylo of Century or Harjwr's nnd jou havo n good work both for hintory ond fiction. Avoid trnshy literature nlovo nil things for they nro ovil compan'ons. Reading is nn instructive us wcl as pleasant pastime, but bo very cirohl about what you read. Smiux. A sharp knifo is ono of tho luxuries ot life. Seo our premium oiler on page eight.
