Its sentiments aro nn idoal em bodimentot tbodutyoffarmorfl tothem uolvos tmd othors. In or out of tho Ornngo, farmers ought to adopt these Fontimonts as a guido to duty, and they will bo mora prOsporous and happior : For our businosa interests, wo desiro to bring producers and consumers, far mors and manufacturers into tho most direct and friendly roktious possible. Honco, wo must dispunso with a surplus of middlemen, not that wo aro unfriendly to them, but wo do not need them. Their surplus and their exactions di minish our profits. Wo wago no nggressivo wnrfaro against any othor interest whatovcr. .On tbo contrary , all our acts and nil our efforts, "so far as busincH is concerned, aro not only for tho boncfit of tho pro ducer nnd consumer, but nlo for all othor interests that tend to bring theso two parties into speedy and economical contact. Honco, wo bold, that trans portation companies of ovcry kind aro necessary to our success, that tboir in terests aro intimately connected with our interests, and harmonious action is mutually advantageous j keeping in view tho first sontonco in our declaration of principles of action that "Individual happiness depends upon general pros perity." Wo shall, thoreforo, advocate for overy ritoto tbo incroaso in ovcry practicablo way 01 all lacilittcs lor transporting cheaply to tho seaboard, or between homo producers and consumers, nlr tho pro ductions of our country. We adopt it as our fixed purposo to "open out tho channels in nature's grant arterios, that tho lifo-blood of commerco may flow frcoly." Wo aro not enemies of railroads, navi gablo and irrigating canals, nor of any corporation that will advanco our indus trial interests, nor of any laboring lasses. In our noblo Order there is no com munism, no ligrarinnism. Wo aro opposed to such spirit and management of any corporation or ontcrpriso as tonds to oppress tho peoplo nnd rob thorn of their just profits. Wo nro not onomics to capital, but wo opposo tho tyranny of monopolies. Wo long to fcco tho antagonism between capital and labor romovod by common co;isent, and by an enlightened statesmanship worthy of tbo nineteenth century. Wo aro oppos ed to oxecsaivo salaries, high rates of in terest, and exorbitant per ccnU profits in trade. Thoy greatly incrcaso our bur dens, and- do not bear a proper pro portion to tho profits of producors. Wo dosiro only ftolt-protcction and tho pro tection of ovcry truo interest of our land by legitimate profits. Boms dram Thoughts. Tbo Grange is ono of tho factors o f tho lost quarter of tho nineteenth century in clovating and enlightening, in push ing forward and improving tho agricul tural peoplo of tbo United States. Who-t-vcr writes tho history of our own times will not do justico if tbo great merit of tho Grange movomont is not accorded its full place. No other era, no other age, no other timos have bad nn order that sought tho betterment of tbo great farming class. In this, wo who live now aro blessed abovo tboso who have pro ceded us, and wo may leave such a legaoy in our order of Patrons of Hus bandry, as was never handed down be fore. The Grango, however, well adapted' to tho south and west for which it was de signed more especially by its origina tors, is peculiarly well adapted to New Kugland, and it is hero in New England that wo may hopo for its host and its grandest dovclopinout, its greatest utility and its permanence. New England is n land of small farms, comp.net settlement p, stands high in educational interests, has good markets, and tho church and schoolhouso sido by side in iilmiwt every neighborhood. New Knglnnd U a laud of villages, of good roads and thrifty people, nnd thcGrnngo ball is frequently mot with by tho traveler. Now Knglnnd peoplo may bo slow to move, but when thoy hnvo well considered nnd tnko position, it menns they havo como to Btay. Tho crowning beauty of tho Grango nnd Grango teaching is that it adds dignity to labor. It plants itself on tho only signet of truo nobility, useful labor. It teaches its mombcrs to resjwet them selves, their calling and ovory brnnch of Iribor. Thero is nothing lowly about useful toil and preserving industry. Man has risen from tho savage state, bo como civilized nnd enlightened, sulxlucd tho wilderness and subjugated tho ocean, mado tbo elements doubly, yea infinitely moro subserviont to him by labor. Uy this sign man conquer. Labor conquers all things. Tho rivers .are harnessed to tbo great fnctory wheels. Tho inort power of wood or eonl and water is de veloped in Bloam and harnessed to ovcry useful purpose. And now Inbor guided by brain, is searching the secrets of earth and air to wrest tho elcotrict forco from its biddon mystorics nnd chain it to our cars, mills, streots and households Farmers nro lonrning through tho graco of Grango gospel to rospect them selves. This is ono thing that has boon lacking in tho past in tho farmer's schedulo of valuation. IIo has under rated himself nnd overrated othor call ings. Tho first stop towards roform is to excite self-respect. It iscnsy to nsecrt equality with empty words, but hardor to provo with worthy actions. Tho far mer hns been proving up nil theso years, but nover until the days of tho Grange taught him how, taken ad vantage of his proof or demanded n summing up of tho evidence. Tho Grange tenches nnd inoulcntos tempcraned in eating, drink ing nnd lnngungo, also in work nnd re creation, thus embracing nil tho great departments of life. This wo aro taught to tako with tin into ovory placo nnd ob serve nt nil times. Can any admonition bo moro salutary, nnd is thero n clnss nny moro obsorvnntof this noblo precept thnn aro PntronsT It is by his work tho workman is proved. It is by tho bettor pnrt of lifo wo livo, wo aro usoful, and by which wo nro tho longest nnd most kindly remembered. Wo huvo nover known anyone, to bo mndo worso by joining tho Grango. On tho other band wo havo nover known ono but what hns boon mndo better, many to a largo oxtont. Therefore, tho Grango is to bo encouraged nnd mndo of tho greatest possiblo bono fit. This is truly wise J. W. L., in Mnino Fnrmer. Farm Life. Tho success or othorwiso of tho Fronch systom of forming dopends upon tho fnnnor's wife. Kho it is who docs tho most of tho work booing turnips, mowing grass, roaping corn no mat ter how boavy tho farming labor. Some times tho mon gossip whilo tho wives work, but moro generally thoy must find employment oleowliero. Success on small holdings is only attained by this division of labor, and this, as woll ns tho lnw of succession, is necessarily against an incrento in tho population. Families, as a rule, nro Bmall, and Lady Vcrnoy found nbout Lyons two children moro common than thrco in a household. Anotlicr writor says: "An English tonant can hardlv imagino tho iutciiFO industry, tho sovoro drudgery, of tho small French proprietor. Eoinnlo labor is everywhoro tho rule. From morning till night ovory memlwr of tho family is toiling nt hard labor in tho fields ; tho food is of the worst description, and tho sole object of lifo is to save. Nothing is spent for books or nowspapors, or any thing out of tho dullest routine. Drought up in tbo deepest ignorance, tho French rural population glvo no ussitanco in public affaire, and degoncntto into puppets of politicians or officials." In Gormany tho peasant proprietor prcsonts soino foatures different from thoao ob served in Franco, nnd his position in Prussia in especial, but moro or less so. in nil tho German States is a somowhat complicated one. Robinson, in tho Planter and Stockman, puts in a plea for the better caro of tho poultry yard, as fol lows : At we conduct our stock farming, wo preparo tho very nest homes for our stock, yet never ns much as givo n thought for tho poultry. Every day, as regularly ns wo eat, wo feed our horses and cattlo, and take special pains to wa ter them. Wo slop tho hogs ns cnrcful- ly ns wo feed tho horses, yet if n poor chicken, driven by hunger, Hies into tho hog pen to pick up n few grains of com, wo uiako n specialty of throwing rocks nnd clubs nt it, nnd if per chnnco wo kill one, wo proceed to devour it for dinner, yot wo expect tho poultry and eggs to buy our groceries and many other thing. Wo dread to feed tho chickens in tho winter unless they aro continual ly dropping eggs. Wo sny wo can seo no profit in feeding hens when thoy do not pay their way ; yet wo go on and on stuffing tho shoats, cramming tho calvos, bousing the lambs nnd taking earn of tho colts, which produco not n single cent for their board except their prospective worth when thoy nro full grown, whilo chickens, if they havo tho same earc nnd housiug us tho othor stock gets, will pay for themselves many times over. There nro many men living on farm who nro not fitted to do gen eral fnrming who could niako n success ns poultry specialist. Eggs for Setting. Tho question is often asked, "How long can nn egg bo kept after it is laid iKjforo it must lie sot?" Tho Poultry Monthly nnsweis tho question by saying that eggs that nro transported by rail should be as fresh us possiblo, as tho whito of nn egg gets thin in a few days, nnd tho older tho egg, tbo thinner tho white. If kept nnd set nt homo an egg will hatch nt four weeks old, and per haps older, but wo nover keep them af ter four weeks. They should bo turned once in a day two, if laid on tboir sides. If kept on tbo small end they need not be changed. Tho turning is to keep tho yolk from the shell.
