All wo behold in little olno but coudoiuod and cryatnlizcd sun light. All would bo congealed into solid silence. Yet bow littlo regard, compnrntivoly, tho great majority appear to havo for tho healthful supply of this important element of sunlight! How many stnblefl nro there that aro properly lighted? Too many are gloomy dungeous, pervaded by a mysterious twilight, that might render vision clear to tho ojkmi eyed owl, but which required several minutes for tho adjustment of tho stnaHor-npor-tured eye of man to enable it to see ob jects even in dim outline. Then, niter you have lieou in this gloomy shadow until the iris of theoyo is extended toils utmost, you step into the open daylight, nnd you uio ncaieely les blinded than you wero when you outeied. You fiut encounter n wall of thick darkness. This dissipated, you arO pained with theglaro of full daylight, othonvino properly nd juhted ami ngrcoitblo to the oyo. Hut you keep your homo in this sta bio! When you go in, you leave tho door open, uud maybe you slunou lioard from n window in tho rear of your horso. Why do yon do this? For no other purpose than to enable you to see, oven imH!rfoetly, to do whatever you have to perforin. Hut your lionw is left, day after day, to Htand in tho dark and poke around the ruck and niaugor for his feed, and you tale no thought about tho matter. Do you Bupposo its oyo-dght is not strained and injured by Huh exer tion and tho midden transitions from darkness to light whenever you lead It out of tho stable? You can dopeud upon it many a horso sutlers from imperfect eyesight because of this very thought lcaauoss on tho part of its owner. Then again, light it essential to health. You cannot dwell in a house or apart mont where tho sunlight never strikes and the full daylight nover comes, with out becoming depressed, gloomy, our, and sick, Tho fact is beginning to bo woll recognized by many intelligent per sons. Tho sumo effect in kiud, if not in degree, is produced on tho horso or other animal that constantly stands in the cold twilight of a uovor-auntightcd stable. You must havo light, as well as air and food, or you cannot onjoy perfect health. Neither can your horse. And then, if to shutting out the light is added the evil wf finality nut the fresh uir if ventilation is also neglected have u condition every way calculated to dobil itale, and in a short tini" ruin the health nnd usoftilnees of your pet animal. Thon put windows and ventilators in your stables, make tbcnl light, airy, and eheeiful. and you will not only add to I no comfort of your horse nnd your own, but its value, giving willingness to its dlnr-'isitioii and elasticity to the step. 2$orliniIiural. . Breeding: Mates. It has always been one of the most profitable of farm occupations to breed mules. The demand for them on South ern plantations, where they meet their congouinl companion, the tiegro, has al ways been e'eadyand remunerative. At the North there aro largo numbers of mules worked in mines, on street-car linos, and as factory teams. The mines generally lequiro small mules, planta tions nnd car lines medium, and for city draft, tho largest size. In brooding, tho size, of tho initio, in a great measure, is regulated by tho size of tho Jack; though of course the sizo qt tho marc has much to do with tho form, and weight of tho colt; nnd sizo nlono regulates tho prico of tho animal, it is best to procuro tho scrvico of the largest Jack' that can bo obtained, nnd tiso large, robust nmros. Mules do not vary greatly in form, and color doeH not affect their value. They have no Htyle, and nro not rivals of tho Horse in tho love and affection of tho owner, until thd hard uso of ndvorslly teaches him that "handsomo is as hand somo does." American Agriculturist. Tho horn of a cow Is an appendago not of tho skull but of tho skin. In tho calf tho horn is loo,io in tho head and may be removed with n section of tho skin. The horn is fed by tho skin, as is also tho hair, and ns tho removal of the skin on any portion of tho body loaves a ecnr which will not hair over, bo tho re moval of tho skin with tho rudimentary horn leavos n scar that ennnot produco a now horn. It is claimed there is no bettor time to perform the operation than when tho calf is two wcoks old. Tho horn at this age is merely a section of soft, hairless skin callod tho matrix, or mother of tho future horn. In re moving it it is only necessary to mako clean work of it, taking a rim of tho skin an eighth of an inch wide atirrotiMtliii? matrix. It can bo done with ono sweep of tho knife, the calf boiug laid on its side and the bead 11 r mly hold to tho ground under the kuon of the operator. No ono who has observed tho feeling of security nnd the good temper manifested by a herd of polled cattle confined in a shed or small yard, could ovor wish to see the horns icstorcd upon such a nerd. Mnuy valuable lives aro yearly sacrificed through tho goring of horns upon vicious or playful animals. Our present civili sation has no call for such peai-ons. N. Y. Herald. T., recently, in tho form of an atmos pheric current of considerable Hiwcr. As observed there, tug current did not reach the ground, but varied in distance from four to six feet from it. It was first noticed by tho peculiar ellect it had on hnihCH and cattle. A buxniug bound was beard from around tho ears of animals- similar to that mado by the s warm ing of bees distinctly audible nt a dU tancn of several feet. Horses and mules threw thoir heads around in a very ex cited manner, noting as though their cars wero full of Hies. The snapping of clectrio sparks was also heard. Horses which kept thoir beads cIom) to tho ground wero not troubled, as tho current did not seem to reach down to them. Many teams became frantic nnd uncon trollable. Ono horso wis so'frightonod that it fell, and tried to creep under its mate for protection. Oxou also behaved in a very unreasonable and sprightly mnnuer. Farmers wero frightened and luuricd to tho kirn with all possiblo speed. Finally n brief thunder shower came up, and tho Hash of .lightning af forded immediate relief. Tho current llowed from west to eat, nnd was six or seven miles in width. -CorresH)ndeueo Milwaukee Wisconsin. Uow to Avoid Doctor BtUs. As my modo of setting hodgo plants differs from the ono you gavo J. Y. last week, f givo it hero for what it is worth : After thoroughly prcnariufr your hedge row, stretch a ropo about four inches to tho left of tho lino on which you proposo to set yoHr hedgo ; take a sharp, bright spado and press it into the ground its full depth with tho point slanting forward along tho row and tho odgo about tbreo inches to tho right of the ropo ; then as you boar upon tho handle havo n boy thrust tho plant in behind tho spade, pull your spado up and you aro ready to set another in tho samo mitunor. By this mode you can set more hedgo, mako a straighter row, and leavo it in better condition, for in walking ovor tho row, you press tho dirt to tho roots of the plants. Your ground should bo plowed eight or ten inches deep and perfectly loose, and your spado so bright that no diit will cling to it. With a thirteen year old boy to put tho plants in for mo I havo sot five thousand a day, setting thorn four iuchos apart which I think hotter than wider, for should ono dio you do not have such a gap. It is no troublo to mako a good hodgo with a good stand, and impossible without it, and a poor hedge is mi ovorlanting nuisance. Hut u hedge icquhos work, uud a gro.tt ileal of it, both to grow it and to keep it trimmed after it is grown. I know this from experience, nud if I had it to do over again I would set a treo every eight feet along tho lino uud when it attained suillcieut sizo would fasten wire to it, whon 1 would have a fence that would require littlo repair, kill but littlo grass, all'ord no shejtor for rats, mice and insects that injure eiopi. 1 (S. This is especially true in the regions known as the llauktuus, in tho govern ment of Krwin. Tho industry began an far back as 1850. In 1801 1.000 tons wero produced; five years later, ft,000 tons, and in 1881 tho crop yielded 10,000 tons, worth about 0,000,000 rub-lee. Lately they have introduced tho best of American "Florida" cotton, which, on account of its superior character, finds much moro favor with tho manufactur ers and purchasers, though Kussian planters havo, notwithstanding tho ad vantage of the soil, thus far not sue- cceded in producing an artiolo fully equal to that of America, Consul-General Raino adds, in conclusion : 'No doubt exists that cotton growing is in creasing in the llaukasus, where large tracts of so-called freo laud aro within reach of planters."
