few who do think, will agree with us
when wo say that n grindstono is both
badly used and badly chosen. It is too
small, too thick, it is not ovetily and
truly set and cmitered.it is not properly
speeded, and is turned either too fast,
and m.ido t. .mow tho water around, or
too Blow, mid so fails to do its work well;
it is not woll taLoii caro of and it is
badly used. A grindstono to do good
scrvico should bo at least thrco feet in
diameter nnd two and oro-half to thrco
inches in thickness, having a bevel on
oach sido of tho faco for grinding on.
It should bo quite froo from hard spots
of iron pyrites, which nro injurious to
tool, although these may bo taken out
with a sharp pointed punch. If it is
not contcred truly, it will work out of
shape and soon rcquiro trucing up. It
should run us fast as possible, as it docs
work both better nnd inoro quickly. To
prevont it from tin owing water a picco
of biieeimr should bo fastened to a
staple fixed across tho frame on each
end, but not so c1qo as to grind it out;
this will catch tho excess of water nnd
clean it. The -tone Hhnuld bo kept in
the shade, and never in water which
softens it and makes ono sido woar fastor
thnu tho other. Tho water box should
havo a hole in it, to lot out tho wntor
and keep the Mono dry whon not in use.
In grinding it should mostly Mini from
the tool, and if used otherwise, great
caro should bo taken by the one who
hold tho tool, not to gougo tho stone.

clothes washing as follows:
Perhaps sonio llko myself prefer from
motives of economy, to uso the old
fashioned soft soap. I do my washing
in this way : Soak tho clothes for ten or
fifteen minutes in a strong suds, just
enough to cover tho clothes. Aftor
washing put all tho whito clothes with
tho finer ones on top, into another tub.
Pour over them enough boiling water to
cover thorn woll. Cover tho tub to keep
tho steam in. In ton minutes you can
uncover thorn, take tho washltoard by
tho legs and with tho top press and suds
tho clothes, turning litem over to get at,
thorn all. Wring out and bluo as usunl
Clothes washed in this way will bo
whiter than when boiled. I koop tho
suds warm for tho whole of my clothes.
Calicoes will not fade if put in dirty
suds that is, dark calicoes. Light
calicoes I wash with the whito clothos.
