Happy is tho woman who sympathizes is her husband's tastes and pursuits, who has an undoistauding of their common interests, and is acquainted with his financial standing, for then she is cap ablo of judging wisely of his euros and perplexities, and is ablo to adviso intel ligently. Whatovcr tho husband's call ing may be, ho is moro successful if she whom He lias chosen for a life ?ojnpan ion, is qualified for a business helper, and tho wife is far- happier to bo tho re cipient of hi confidence if slio sympa thizes in hU work, than to remain in happy ignorance of impeading calamities. If as tho wifo of a physician she finds her services indispcnsiblo in his routine of professional dutios; if us tho wifo of a minister sho appreciates tho dignity of his calling, nnd lends her influcnco to his labors ; if as tho wifo of a politici an sho is expected to understand his views and stand by him in victory or defeat, know why ho is succossful or otherwise ; if as tho wifo of an nrtisan sho takes prido in his skill, how much moro than cither of these should the wifo of 11 farmor understand nnd sympa thize in a work that cannot ho dissovcr od from tho houso and homo. If tho husband is incapacitated by disease, or removed by death, tho wifo should bo ablo to stand in his place, having tho oversight of tho farm as sho has had it, nnd as no ono elso con havo as well. It is tho only businoss whoro a woman is expected to succeed her husband in coso of his death. If sho is not qualified for this, loss ensues. Sbo need not go into tho field nnd por form tho labor of tho farm with her own hands, but sho should bo nblo to direct thoso who do, nnd to direct so well that sho win tho respect of her workmen. Tho avenues of labor that load to wo man's indopondence nro constantly widoning and among tho honorablo pursuits in which sho is making a suc cess is that of farming. Tkcro nro suc cessful lady horto raiser, cattlo queens, sheep ownors nnd fruit growers, who havo continued tho businoss left thorn by husbnnds or fathers. Eastern girls havo left good homes nnd" npplicd Horace Grccly's ndvico to themselves ns woll as young men, gono West, pre empted laud and tiro making thomsclvcs homes nnd wealth. Tho Now Hampshire Statesman gives an interesting account of n youug lady farmor in that state. Her husband died leaving her with a farm valued at $10, 000 and encumbered with a dobt of $8,000. Trained to business methods sho reduced hor ideas of farming to this theory which nho put into successful practico: "Farmers to succeed must have a systom of buying, soiling and meeting nil obligations ai tho proper time, and mako expenditures according to their incomes." In a fow years Mrs. Pago paid off all hor indebtedness, and that too by hiring all her work done. Good mnnagemont, system and a lovo for and understanding of hor business, gavo success to this desorving woman farmer. Many would havo shrunk from eo formidable an undertaking, sold tho farm, paid tho debt, and then havo been unable to invest tho balance safely for tho reason that they had neither sympathy with their husband's biuincss or a knowledge of its details. What n hundred women havo dono ton thousand can do, but with tho con ditions always in view, tho samo knowl odgo that men haw, and tho iowor to overcome obstacles with a natural tasta for farm life. Drugs at Fort's, 100 State street. jfosi $M liililrcfy OUR LETTER BOX. It doos not seem that ono week has passed sinco wo sat down to gather in tho contents of tho Letter 13ox. Yet it is so. Knch day brings to all of us re curring duties, perhaps not all tho fame; yot that which must ho dono ovor nnd over again. Lifo is mado up of these requirements from day to day, giving occupation to mind and body, and hap py is the ono who cheerfully finds n plcasuro in filling out tho hours that must bo busy, if wo fulfil obligations. Its only by keeping busy and keeping tho mind active that wo can bo entirely sat isfied. To havo somo aim in lifo to tako a part in whatovcr comes within our scope, to identify ourselves with others will expand our own lifo and give us something to do ; somothing to think of besides ourselves nnd our own dispomforts. Wo should strivo to keep up tho cheerful hopeful spirit of youth, fighting hard against tho spirit of dis couragement that never fails to como with added years. Our dear Clydo comes with a cheer ful, brcozy letter' breathing of youth and strength, calculated to givo us all lifo again "to bo up and doing, with n heart for uuy fate." Undo Tom comes out with another helpful, choorful letter, and Aunt Hotty has need of just such encouragement. If it woro not for "IMnin Juanna," "Old Boy," and somo fow other staunch friends, wo should fall by tho way. Its just impossible for nuy one to stand alone. Wo must look to each other for sympathy, comfort and Biipport. Next wcok wo shall look for somo of our girls and boys lo help out tho I.cttor Dox. You would all bo disappointed to find it empty for the first timo in a long limo. I.psr Vaijjsy, Or., April 2, 18S0. I'.illtor Uotno Circlot Tho weather for tho lust fow days has boon delightful and the many and beautifully tinged flowors greet us on ovury hand. Hut oh, dear! such a tl.-y as wo had last wcok. Tho rain camo down in torrents ; tho ground was afloat with wator in less than twenty-four hours. Tho swaila woro full and over flowing, nnd to add to our mlsfortuno it was school day, and wo must either "coon" tho fonco n portion of tho way or stay at homo, and which do you think wo did? Why wo put on boots and proved ourselves equal to tho emer gency. Wo learned ono thing that day: That energy is tho key to success. If Jim, Pete, nnd Jack does say: Oh, what is tho use, there is plenty of days bo sido this; so I'll stay at homo by tho stovo to-day. You may do that, too. Hut thero's a day gono rushing into otornity that you can novnr recall, and perhaps it might havo been n golden day to you. So tho " Old Hoy " writos again ; I am suro I do not know whether ho is what his no" do plumo designates him to ba or not. When I fhnll havo finished tho present ensu ing conundrum which roiibist of !!2 dif ferent ideas branching out in difl'crcnt direction. I shall then apply myself to oni'i of smaller copc, then porhiqn I can answer tlm "Old Uoyn'' conundrum. George what is tho difi'crenco between it lady and n duck? Tho Sunday schools aro in a prosperous condition while tho melodious echoes of tho serenade aro heard quito frequently addressing them selves to tho musical band in our ploninnt littlo string-town. Everybody is quito busy working in thoir gardens, cither vegctablo or flower, which affords delightful nnd healthful oicrcise. It givos tho hoiibo plants a cliauco to bo in tho open air, and expands tho lungs, do rolopo tho muselo and arouse u circula tion that will build up the tired machin ery of idlonoss tho effect of in-door exercise. I enjoy reading Plain Juann's letters, and think if tho world was full of Plain Juuuns wo would havo quito a ploasant world. For fear Aunt Hetty will throw this lengthy letter in tho wabto basket, I will closo. I am your friend, CjA'dk Dariwi:. Dextke, Or-, April 20, 18S0. Editor Homo Circle ; I eco yon admit old boys to tho Circle and believing I could answer Clyda dog problem in such a way as to interest the littlo foll, I leg leave whilo I make the attempt, I will illustrato by the steam cngino ; something which all our littlo folks nro familiar with. All havo notio od tho regular jots of ttcara und smpko sent forth at every stroke of tho cngino. This is worn out matter (or matter that has been used) no longor necessary in running tho engine, and would stop it if it did not escape. Theioforo wo can soc tho wisdom of tho Maker in allow ing a way for its escape. Wo can also notico tho peculiar odor of tho escaping mattor; being easily discerned by our own sonso of smell. Now, my little friends, just think of your own bodies being that great boiler, and your heart tho engine, at every vibration sendin forth in regular jets tho worn out matter through tho escape pipes that tho wibe builder has mado for that purpose, in stend of ono or two, n counties numbor. Every poro of tho skin serving as" an escape; oven tho soles of tho feet and tho palms of tho hand permitting tho reg ulnr escape, pull', puff, puff, sent out by tho action of tho heart, just liko the fiold engine. This escaping mattor is invlsiblo to tho naked cyo in tempera turo ltko our climate, but placo onb xf my littlo friends away up north whero tho thcrmomotor marks 75 or 80 dog below zoro nnd it would thon wonld bo visiblo, giving out a crnokling Bound at each boating pulso ; even through tlio soles of tho feet and heavy outcr-woar necessary in that high latitude, causing a person to look more liko a travoling kiln than a human being. You can eco how tho escaping mattor would saturflto tho ground at every stop, and each per son having their own peculiar odor", tho tho dog being possessed of vorync'uto sonso of smell will easily porccivo tho scent of his master iti his tracks. When tho tracks becomo old or aro washed by rain tho dog cannot follow thorn, oven though thoy aro vory plnlnly visible lo tho naked eye. Tho odor being evapor ated or washed away. U.Stu: Tom.
