W1LLA3IETTE PARMER: SALEM, ORIO'JON, MAX" 7 1886 oiiltru. OEO. I). UOODIIUK, KDlTOn. Ducks grow fust ami nro lnrgo ciiteM, but wo do not think they consume any moro than chickoiiH, in proportion to their sizo and difloronco of prico that they arc sold for. We were told the unrioui -tory boiiio time ago by U. Coffey nbout a turkey hen which ho hud act with ejigs. By nomn means tho old hen took sick and died; and hor belter lmlf (tlio gobbler) got it into his mind that ho could act in the incubntor, and "parental dad" of tho ogg and youm poult. So ho sot, nnd kept setting on tlie egi'i and when tho little ones came off he took the place of mother hen and rained tho whole bntch. Benevolence indeed. This old gobbler lived to do good. There is a wide difference of. opinion among poultrymcn a to which is tho best brood of fowl And wo think it is it good do.il like the milk maid that kiss ed her cows when inked why she did f-o, alio roplied that everybody had thoir ' ruthcr"as to who, or what they kissed, and ns long in Iio prefeiod kissing the cowsbo gties'ctl it wa nobodys lmainos but her own. Th'n is about our opinion in regard to the many varieties of fowls, they arc all good ; but everybody has their "ruthcr"' a to what variety they will keep. SUE BOYCOTIEU THEM. Wo had a grade Plymouth Hock hen to hatch n lino brood of Poking duck?, and sho positivoly refused to own Micin as hor offspring. She "struck." in fact (.ho 'boycotted'' tho wholo brood, and re fused her parental care, to thoso liltlo webtoed orplmiiK. Wo llnnlly found anothor lion that took theso littlo onos in out of tho cold, and Doomed glad to givo up hor nest of eggs to tho truant hon that could not bo induced to boliovo that ducks woio chickons. This hen must bo a Knicht and wo shall not furnish her with any moro eggs to gratify hor desires to incubate, and havo her striko just at tho timo her services aro moro needed. POULTRY BU0W8. If thoro is anything that is attraotivo and interesting, it in it lino display of poultry and pot stock. Most ovcryono who is in reach of n poultry show, whether ho boa lovcrof fine fcnlliors or not, has n curiosity to sco a display of tho numerous varieties of fowls and pet stock. Tho fanciers and poultrymcn generally nro greatly in ijeod of a good exhibition tho coming fall not only as an advancement of their interest, but lhat all breeders may como together, inter I'hnngo ideas, compare stock, and boo whore wo may improve-. At such a Miow wo may nblo to ronew old no quatttonccs, and niako many now ones. Wo do not boliovo that tho poultry fraternity of that Northwest can hold n show exclusively of poultry and innko it a success, whon wo say succoss, wo mean a financial success. Wo havo not a thickly populated country and buyers aro not going, to como a long distanco to mako puicuascs of fowls, unless thoy havo somothing moro at stako to draw them. It is tho purchasor or thoso that want stock, that makes a poultry show a success, not the curiosity seeker, for ho only pays a small ndmittenco foo and this only goes towards paying expenses of a chow. Notwithstanding there aro numerous poultry shows through out tho country, nomo of which aro hold in largo citios yet not one out of twenty every pay tho exponses of an exhibit out of tho gate inonoy. Whon Eastern poultrymcn fad to mako a bhow pjy its way when held in a city with a population equal to all of Oregon, wo do not sco tho practibility of the fraternity trying anything of tho kind here. No poultry show can ever be a micccss without both a largo exhibit and a large attendonco, together with plenty of buyers. Wo canto to tho con clusion last year after making a largo exhibit of our fowls at tho Oregon Stato Fair that this was tho place for tho breeders of tho Northwest to como to getbor with their fino fowls. Wo de rived more benefit from our exhibit thero than all our combined efforts of advertising and exhibiting elsewhere. Tho reason for this is . people como from all parts of the Northwest to the .State Eair and aftor tho attractions of tho Fair havo been taken in they como to the conclusion that thoy mu9t havo u fino trioof fowls to tko homo with thorn and the exhibitor is paid, not in tho money he derives from a premium taken; but the bonory of receiving it, and the advertisement and tales of his stock. It is folly to talk nbout a breeder shipping fowls from seventy-fivo to two, or tlncv hundred miles, nnd bo at a heavy e.xpoiix' for ten or twelvo days, and exhibit to ottibvity seekers without making sale? Urn-dent will never at tend such rdtir. I'll' Ik tho only practical view "f th' i nwlioii and the Oregon .S'uiu Fan i- ib- only sureessful pliK'o for xxhiliit '"at wo ran see now. Tbcio can only u but otto obstacle against tbiy, andibai i at that -nson of tlio year the old t'twli nro m tly in moult, and the youuir. are too young to show well, but nil breeder am served alike in t!ii i expect, and proper al lowance for condition of feath r and male, could be made and this "hoitld excuse no nun from exhibiting bifl fowls The Peu-ylvaniii poultry men all combined and exhibited ,tt the I'enxyl vauia .Stale Fuh,lai vear anl a liner .show was nevvr howl anywhere, or a ni'iro ucc-ful one. The Mcob.tr r-lcocn This rare and handsome pigeon is found in the Nieobir Mand.s, laying norlbucfl m .-um lira, au.l is also qnito numerous in Sumatra. It has como strange ehanirteristie irniK'iiciliec'.ilii.v an attachment for its mate, mid a kind of loving yadni"wiii'n alone; although when dumehtirated and neciisiomed to tho compnnion-hip of man. it i moro cheerful and confiding. Tho habits of the Nieob.tr Pigeon in a wild state, are itNo inu'reting. They usually go in pair whim in qiieM. of food, though Heme may bo witbin rail ing. Sensitive and loving its eonstaney t) iLs mute is as irue as that of the turtle dove. Voluntarily it will perch for it wholo day over the limpid lngoons, looking intently into tho water as if transfixed, watching and waiting for tho shadow of a wing, or tho echo of a coo from its absent mat'. , Tho plumngo of tho Nicobar Pigeon is refulgent It has long and Mowing crimped pointed plumes, which hang over tho ni-ok and bums'. Tim plumes aro bronze, mixed with white and steol bluo reflections; tho back, wings nnd tail coverts nro bronc, glossy green and steel bluo; tho tall is short and square, and of n light blue or bluish white color. During tho breeding season a ileshy tubercle rises, on tho bnso of tho upper mandible. Thoy mako interesting pet, and delicious food for tho natives. Several varieties havo sprung from the nntlvo stock, which vary moro or loss in typo and color. J. W. Corr. in tho Poultry Monthly.
