WILLAMETTE FARMER: SALEM. OREGOM. MAY 7. 188G j&Motk. Destroying Vermin la Cattle. Tlio HUrcst romody for vermin on cows nnil culvca is to shear tho animal and thou rub into tho surfneo of tho body it mixture) of 0110 part bonzino mid six piirtn oil. If you dn not liko to do tho uliuaring, you may comb tho hair with u narrow comb clipped into n mod oratoly strong dilution of potash. After oncli Hcrano with tho comb, dip it into tho lye, which will destroy tho lico sticking to it. Then you may oitlior rub tho body thoroughly with tho mixture of one part of solt twup with tiiruo parts ot tlio abovn montiotied lye, removing it twenty-four liour-s Willi u brum (lipped in warm water, or rub in tlio mixUiro of ono part bonzinii and hIx parts oil. It uiikoi lit tlo (liirurnneo which of tliuo remedies is oui ployed. The principle thing to bo romombured is that the rubbing bo thorough, and that it ho repeated after four day-t hi order to destroy tho brood which hat meanwhile bjon hatched from tho eggs. Tin Care or Young rigi. As the lima draws noar whou tho most of tho young pigs to coma in 183G will bo here, and in nocd of tho host euro that can bo given thorn, it is well to con Bidor in what way improvements in methods ot managing over thoso practic ed in former years can bo mndu. Mr. llober lliunfroy, in his excellent papers on Berkshiros, written for tho London Live Stock Journal Almanac for 1880, gives nomo hints regarding young pigs well wortli tho reading by any ono, whatever tho brood of swino ho may bo keeping. Mr. Hurafroy says: It is not a question of oxpoueo so much as of time mid troublo to givo them a littlo dlgostablo food often from the flrnt day they will oat any. It iu Hiirprislng tho help it is, both to tho mother and the pigi. Wo all know iu tho groat majority of omen, this is regularly done as a matter of course, but by Homo few it is not thought of, or rather it is not thought to be of much importanto; or they think, perhaps, it is a good mother and die is doing tho pigH well and nothing mote is neces sary. The unfortunate oflectH of such a theory could never nil bo known till every pig receiving such treatment has run through its course. Tho dilllculty comes about something iu (his way. Tho quantity of milk tho little pigs got from their mother at oach meal is very trilling: it is exceedingly rich and taken often, ami if this goes on many weeks and no moro bulky food is taken, their whole system settles down to a state of things that cannot last, so (hut when they have some day, almost suddenly, to rely on food of perhaps ten times the bulk there is literally not room for them, with only two or three meals a day, to stow away sufficient to carry them on in good condition. Tho natural and uniform distention of tho intestines has not been going on, and the cttiiMHpiouccs am far moro serious than they appear at llrst sight. Tho few that cannot push through, and so show it ut tho time, become squeaking little flights that never once look likely to pay their way. The others cat and drink and grow, and to all appearance aro healthy and triable; but the lungs mid liver, as well utt tho bowels, have undergone such a strain through tlio sudden change of food that tho chanc es are many (hat the pigs will have weak, Misceptablo paitH about them just such weak points as would bo like ly to turn a H'iglit lisk into a certain danger, lieiangeinent from eating un vvlioli-oino food, mi attaek of iullaumtion or a fold, or a slight attaek of fever would, tiny of theiN. ho inoiu serious in such ciws. bccaim it iillo.vrt tho tlieeiir-o to sual a march on the attendant when n pi. no is found mini) than ready for fever or inllamntion to cot iiiou. hie -eoutnmoneies are common to evn breed f pigs, mid with all a good stint it) of the tli t-t importance. The Relations of the Farmer Thereto. -How they Orlzlnate and now to Depose Them. IIY V. 8. MATTEHOtf. Tho muscular power of insets is simp ly astonishing. An ant can carry a solid picco of load largor that itself. A flea can jump two hundred times hi own longlh, and tho turnip flea is omo what less agilo, and nearly all of tho de structive insects aro po.cscd of tre mendous oncrgy coniidering their size. Oivon tho same power as a man, one could cover tho distaneo of a milo at five jumps, nnd a horso should go from tho plaza in Salom over tho Willamette river into Polk county at a bound. Tho laws of nalu'o aro always uni form and consistent, and animals of great activity or force, must consumo food in accordance to obtain that force; as Hie s.imn law obtains, in animals and engines, that speed is obtained at tho expenso of powor, and power at tho cx ponso of fuel, hcnco( tho voracity of insects. Tho same is truo of birds, whoso vig orous lifo and celerity of motion do m.inds food accordingly ; and if a horso ato as much according to his weight as a wren, a farmor's loam would soon cat him out of houso And home. Tho turnip flea boctlo is a fair nam ploof this voracity. This littlo black oval hug, about the tenth of an inch long, appears in May and Juno and cats tho loaves of turnips, cabbago, mustard, beets, etc., both cultivatod anil wild. His method is to skeleton!- the leaf br eating out its tissues on tho uppor Hide. And so mo seasons, ho comes in such multitudes as to do much damage. Ho oats Homo plants that are classed as weeds, but docs not compensate for tho damago which ho docs. Ho is diurnal, working entirely by day, and groatly prefers dry woathor and hot sunshine. 01 his methods of propagation I am ig norant, and do not know his larvao or his chrysalis. How to bo rid of him is tho question. The old romedies are, dusting plants when the dow is on, with ashof, limo, road dust, and othor things, all of which is vory laborious ami unsatisfac tory, ns he many times appears proof against all these applications. Sweep ing tho plants with a hand net, and kill ing those caught by dipping them in boiling water, will tiflbnl some satisfac tion and losnen their numbers according to tho poisoveronce applied. Working among plants. helps considerably by keeping tho bugs scared oil'. I pre Hiimo that ioinuing with some prepar ation of arsenic, as Paris green or Lon don purple would bo ollc'etuid. Per hnpspyrethreuin powder, or pulverized white hellebore root would also do for them. Their natural enemies aro tho mull iusccliverous birds, especially tho goldfinch, yellow bird, thistle bird, wild canary, etc. And now I want to mention briefly the hen-louse, and the canary bird mite, .nil the passing to the consideration of more agreeable subjects, and treat of some useful insects that I can scak kindly of, anil not be obliged to be con stantly abusing them. Old poultrynien will perhaps regard me as ignorant on tho hen louso sub jivt, and I hIiiUI not dhquito with them. The inoel in question that I am ac quainted with, lives in cracks and crevi- ces of the hen house, ami roosts, no-tn, etc., ami annoys tho hens at night. Its habits are very similar to thoe of the malodorous bed-bug. As totho remedy that I shall suggest, I stand iu no awe of the criticisms of ancient poultry sharps. It is. cleanliness ami coal oi'. Keep your fowl house from becoming foul. Whitewash if you want to, but remember that this is io please your self, not your hens. Tho lice caw noth ing for whitewash. Hut paint your lieu roosts and crevices where lico resort, with pure kerosene, threo times during every summer, using it freely j and I will agree to eat overy hen louse you will find after the third application. Tho vapor of the oil will not hr.rl the lions utiles your house is too light ami un ventilated, or the oil is ued iu very ex ccssivoquantitj The little bcarlet mites that infect the cages of the canary, and othor pet birds .no similar in their habits to tho last mentioned. Cleanliness, and frequent chnugiug and scalding of cages is the remedy. Many others have been re commended, and many do some good, but aro not to be depended on. Coal ail is not to lvo recommended for vari ous reasons. The 'cotHtautlytircd-out" feeling bo often experienced, is the result of im H)verishcd blocnl, causing enfeebled vi tality. Ayor'a Srsaparilla enriches tho blooil, increases the appetite, and pro motes digcdtiou, Tho system, thus in vigoratod, feols new strength and onergy. "WHAT WE SMOKE AND C1IKW Not I'urnTobnrcii, hut Varluu Sweetened anil MndlrntPil rrrtmrntiims. It Is rather late in tlio day, says Health and Home, to enter a protest against the use of tobacco. Whatever the faculty nmj say on the point of its Injurious qualities, however much tlio clergy may point out tlio possibility of its leading to Intemperance, the fact re mains that a largo proportion of the worltl uses tobacco In some form or other. The Chinee, according to their accustomed vault-, pretend to lmvo benn acquainted for many ages with tobacco. Hut we must remcniber that iu the earliest written oriental talcs which have come down to us the "Ar abian Nlf-hts' Lntertalnments" there is no allusion to the custom of smok ing, anil thero Is every reason to be lieve that all oriental smoking was Imported from Kiiglaml, and that Sir Walter Italclgh lit the llrst pipe smoked out of America. Tho adulteration of tobacco, vory common imtii iu tins country ami abroad, orlses from two considerations. The pure, natural leaf, In Its yellow hue, Js undoubtedly the finest tobacco In the market, lint so many accidents con spire to rentier the lluest leaves scarce that even the natural leaf Itself is Imi tated. Coarse leaves aro bleached by tlio two ot chlorine to tlio bright yellow color of natural leaf, and sultmurio acid, properly diluted, Is used to make the littlo "freckles," which aro supposed by connoisseurs to Indicate a superior quali ty of leaf. Hut the "natural leaf." somehow, doesn't seem to suit tlio taste ot the average ehevver of tobacco. IIo sks a certain degree of sweetness in hLs plug. To till this bill and create a special Ha ver which shall give a kind of Identity to a peculiar brand and causo it to be eagerly sought for I the object of the manufacturer. When tho btindlos of steamed loaves arc fully dried they are ready, for the application of the mixture of simp and licorice, which imparts to tlio choiring tobacco of commerce Its sweetness and flavor The loaves must be as dry as a bono whou subjected to this licorice bath, for the least dampness will rcntlor them white with mold in a few hours. This mold is removed (ono of tho adulte rations) by a dip into diluted muriatic aoltl, and In too many cases forms part of tho solid cako of a better quality. The heat of the mixture causes tlio poros of the leaf to expand, anil tlio swcot syrup, penetrating every fibor, impregnates It thoroughly. From the vat tho dripping bundles are carried out ot the Hat roo. ot the factory nnd exposed to tliu sun, for one day's sunshine is worth more than can bo toltl In the manufacture. After this the leaves aro taken Into a drying-room, where tho thermometer during the day is at 'JO degrees. At night the whole power of the furnace In turned ou. ami the heat Is so Intense that iu the morning the room has to bo cooled off before the operators can enter It. When tho tobacco Im, under this powerful heat, become perfectly dry, tho adulterator gets In Ids work. One factory .sprinkles It with Now Hngland rum, another uses Jamaica rum, another moistens it with the rank eat corn whisky ho eau Hud, anil each brand has Its own peculiar essential oil. Some use fennel, others ginseng, while the acrid sumach, abounding In tannin, cheap mid plenty, gives the peculiar burning of tliu tongue which character izes much "lino-cut." Astringent barks, worm-wood, the refuso to the cinchona, and others give the bitter taste which some consumers like, and the twist or negro head," which Is largely oxjwrted to tropical climates, gets a special ab sorption. We have heretofore published the statement of Mr. Cooper, revenue col lector of North Carolina, himself a large tobacco manufacturer, asserting that touqiia beau ami wliitergreeu were also largely used In atliilteriug tobacco, both ot which are deadh poUotis, ami that he knew of a negro who, having drank 10, having dm a wiiieglassfiil ot tliu mixture, died Iu half 1111 hour, If the.N0 thing, be true of the ordinary chewing tobacco, what can we say of the .smoking article, where slicks ' and stems and dirt ami all mieleauuess go to make un the cigar? Where an end ought to show the wilnkled edge of a pure leaf It idiows a front like that of a eom-HMlto bit of maible. A true tobacco cigar Is line In grain ami free ftoin KteiiH. The wrapper is nothing hi a cigar; the tilling Is every thing. No leaf Is won ha-. 1 for the nianufae tine of om or another of the innumera ble brands between the golden chatl Willi which the millionaire (ills hi-inciT-ehauni and the laborer his cuddy. Almost the onh die ineally pure tobac co is that which the planter dries for himself. xptvaiN 011 the cotton sheet iu the garret, and -.c.i U little Tommy to briiitr him a bunch of cnimb!lur it be tweeu his tinkers to till Ids pipe. lUil this simplicity doiv,u't please.
