Wo havo hoard much about tho privations of farmers' wivos and tho drawbacks of tho sons; but if their trials nro as stated, what can wo say of tho daughters? I havo roforenco to iso lated homes whero thoy havo few or no advantages of school, church, or Bocioty. Thoso privations nro felt kconly by theso girls, who uro brought up and trained, to work from early morn till lato at night, really novor knowing whon their work is done. Their lives aro ono con tinual montonous strain, day in, day out, week in and week out, and so on. Of courso, whon thoy aro ohildron thoy do not notico it so much ; but unfortunate ly thoy do not always remain childron. Gradually tho heat and burden of tho day fall upon them, and thoy nro tied down to all intents and purposes. The nvorago farmer has all astir by four in tho morning, no dlflbrcnco how sleepy thoy may bo. Tho hands aro to got to tho Holds early, and tho breakfast must bo hurriod. Then tho cows nro to bo milked, and uot n fow, and of courso, thoy must mako plonty of butter to do fray tho household expenses. To bo sure, thoro aro exceptions, but is not this tho common rulot Theso duties often fall upon tho daughters in ad dition to raising tho poultry. Dut oh, what a burdon to churn with an old fashioned dasher, wash dishos and sweep, and many nioro things whoso namo is legion. Who would not got tirod of such a hum-drum life and pino for a ohnngoT It woro woll for thoso daughters if thoy had an intelligent, conscientious mother who would sympa thize with thorn and plan for their en joymont; ono who hns not forgotten that sho was onco young and had liko aspicationB nnd girlish fancies, that no kitchon walls could over dispel. Dut nlasl too often sho was destitute of thoso finer sensibilities that help to mako up a truo mother. Parents nro to ofton caro less about thnir children's welfare. Thoy rcquiro mental as woll as physical food; social culture at well as practical ex perience. IWntH should not think that thoy huvo dono their wholo duty when they have fd und clothed tho body. JutlKt) Itlnck'n Kloiirnco. Oratory is capti vating to a western man, and ho stayed to listen n few minutes. Judge lllaek was denouncing trials by military com missions and painting thu Iniquity of nil the extrajudicial tribunals that ever In all history usurped thu prurngutlvci of tho duly-established couits. Ho in htanced Herod, who, when unable to single out from the multitude of chil dron tho Christ child, who was to ho king of tho Jews, tried nil tho babies for prospective treason, convicted them, decreed their death, nnd had his sen tenco carried out with such alacrity and zeal that in ono day tho wholo land was filled with mourning and lamentation. Ho cited Nero trying Hie whole Christian church in a body on tho charge of set ting flro to Dome, and sending them to tho crosn. Ho described Macbeth' hired murderers, "tho commission or ganized in Danquo's case, which feat mum that very night at a convenient place bcsldo tho roud, where it was known ho would be traveling." Ho pictured Iolti Moutcz, minister and mis tress to the king of Davaria, and her "commission" "a pack of Dritlah bull dogs, trained to tear tho Hesli and manglo tho limbs and lap tho life of blood" nnd much more which I can not accurately recall. The westerner stood nnd drunk it in with eager ears and eyes that hung on every gesturo of tho orator until, at tho climax of thu Montcz instance, Judge Dlack thunder ed out: "It gives mo unspeakable pleasure to tell you this sequel. Tho jieojilo rose In their wrath, smashed down tho whoU machinery of oppression, and drovo out into uttermost tdiamo king, dogs, nnd strunqH-'t " Then the listener rushod out of the chamber, hurried across into tho hall of tho house, pushed passed tho door keeper, down tho able to desk whero hU friend was in the midst of bis speech, and plucking him by tho coat-tail ex claimed in a voice so loud as to be heard dozen scats around: "Wind her up, MUD Wind her up, and come over here and listen to old Jerry Black givln' 'em h-lll" jfoi Ijfa f hililrm.. .. rrtiw uood night. The tnlos aro told, tho songs aro sung, Tho evening romp is over, And up tho nursery taira they climb With little butting totiruea that chime Liko bees among tho clover. Their busy drain and happy hearts Aro full of crowding fancies From song and talo .ind insku hnliovo A wondcrous wobof dreams thny weavo And airy child romances. Tho Uarry night is fair without i The new moon rites slowly: Tho nursery lnmn is burning slowly; Kach whito robed like a littlo taint, Their prayers they murmur lowly. Good night! Whllo through tho silent air Tho moonbeams palo arc streaming, They drift from daylight's noisy shore, Dlow out tho light and shut tho door, And loavo them to their dreaming. OUR LETTER BOX. Theso fino spring days are not good for tho Letter Dox, for thcro nro but fow who find timo to romembor tho Circlo whilo out door lifo is so attractive. It seems as if tho sun nover did shino so soft and bright. Then tho air is full of tho Bwcct odor ot fruit blossoms. Wo havo not forgotten that onco tho out door world imtdo us forget all other duties, when wo thought thoro was no other such ploasuro as to pick flowers and brcatho tho breath of spring flowers. But thoro will bo euro to bo somo who will take this hint and send something good to this column. Clarinda sots an cxnmplo by Bonding so long nnd interesting n letter. Hor littlo criticism on tho habits of shoop while answering tho riddle about a drove of theso animals is good, but then wo judge tho answer alio givos is corroct, ovon if it is not ia nccordnnco with tho nature of tho creature Wo wish Clnr indn would writo often sho could find plonty to writo about wo nro sure, if only sho would tnko tho time. Allio May docs niooly for tho first letter, and then sho is only eight voars old. Julia comes ngain with a very nlco letter wo nro glad to hear from tho littlo girl whose namo brings pleasant and sad rocoloctions too. Wo are suro this littlo girl will grow up with right principlos, for sho nssoris that sho is a prohibitionist, which means a good deal bosides temperance. Wo would liko to hear something inoro about tho success of tho incubator. Tho flower garden will not succcod unless shoos and stock ingH nro put on tho chickens feet. It is nmnzing what mischief ono old hen can do even if she has but ono littlo chick to scratch for. Littlo Xollio from away up in tho Spokane country comes with n most welcorao introduction to tho Circle, yes, Ncllio's mamma was onco a littlo girl who loved to piny as well ns Nellie. Sho is well rcmemboied by Hattiu and Sarah. It seems ro littlo while hIiico thoso happy school days. Now, tlici-o frolicsomo girls uro busy women with littlo boys and girls of their own to watch and euro for. It is not easy for childron to imagine that mamma and papn wero ovon liko themselves full of piny and pleasure without cure or worry. Xollio is a busy little girl if sho attends to nil tho nflairs sho tells of wo hope tho cauarios aro not forgotten wo havo bo often noticed in visiting about, that theso littlo prisoners wore often loft without food or wator, thou no ono remombors to givo thu bath, which every bird ought to havo to keep healthy. It is so cruel to confino any living thing and not provido for its needs. Thcio will bo a punishment for all who aro cruel to God's cicatures. Lulu May comes ugain telling this timo of tho swcot spring blossoms and tho nice weather that permits hor to go to Sunday school. Henry boasts of his weight, which promises to mako a big man of him, if ho only grows up to bo as good as ho is big that will ho beat of nil. Wo aro pretty suro ho will mako a good farmer, and a good man, too, for ho wants his namo on tho tomporanco roll. Summit Ranch, Or., April 9, 188(5.
