(V i:rTEPUniMi: SALEM, nRiTG)N, APRIL 2 'sG miltri f.EO. 1). GOODMUn, EDITOP.. TO PACK EQO.S. This month n good ninny will wuut to jircjcrvo tho cggtf. us they will bo so cheap by tho lnttor part of April tlmt thoy nro hardly worth taking to market. For tho benefit of thoso who wish to pack eggs, wo will givo tho best receipt vto know of. Wo Iricd it last senson with satisfaction. It is best to uso wooden buckets or kegs so that n" few tlozcn may bo sold nt a timo without disturbing tho wbolo seasons packing. Tho eggs must bo fresh when put in tho pickle. Keccipt To four gallons of hot wntor add one gallon of fresh unslncked lime, (or in that proportion) Htiring woll until all Blacked. Wlion tho mixturo is cold, strain oil' tho lluid so all hard lumps may bo removed. To tho lluid, add about ono pint of salt, and three tabic spoonfuls of cream of tartar, and stir woll to disolvc. Tho settlings of this should bo saved by pouring over it n little wntcr to keep it moist, put tho eggs in tho lluid and nftcr tho cask is nearly full placo a cloth over them and pour this thick limo ovor it, this will cxclndo tho air, set in u cool placo and tbey will kcop until fall when thoy may bo taken out and put upon tho market Tho shells will bo nico and bright and look invit ing to tho eye. Tho only way thoy can bo told from fresh eggs is that tho whites will bo a little thin, and if the eggs aro handled rough when used, somotimos the yolk will brake. ROUP. IJut fow aro nwaro of tho presence of this diseaso until it has n llrm hold on the flock, as it comes in o many ijuestionnblo shapes iih to deceive many who aro inexporionced. They will per--haps doctor them, but nine times out of ten for tho wrong disease. Jtonp usually causes a diRchargoof tho nostrih which is easily treated. It is generally ac companied by hoarso breathing, tho comb will turn a dark unnatural color. A foul odor will tsiuu from tho fowls breath, or will bo moro particularly noticed when tho fowls mo at roost-in tho coop. With slight nttacts it is similar to bad colds in humans, aud if tho fowls aro not to much exposed thoy will get well thcmolvcs ; but tlio groat danger if whon tho foul smell pervades tho coop where tho chickens aro roost ing. Tho first thing abovo all in treat ment of this disease, is too koop tho fowls in a dry warm place, and swab tho throat by tying a. rag or picco of spongo to a stick using tho medicino for this purpose called larrabaraqucs clorinated soda to bo had tit any drug store. Feed in tho shapo of u pill or in tho soft food a mixturo of equal parts of ground ginger, gentiue, nsu ifa'tidn and boracio acid, allowing a teaspoonful of tho mixturo lo about ono down fowls. Whon this dUagrceablo odor is giveu off by tho fowls it has got into astngo that is highly contagcous. "Why dont tho hens lay in winter!" is an inquiry often made. It is not always bccauBO thoy do not havo warm quar ters or insufficient feod, but becauso thoy aro ovorfed. Thoso who kcop poul try do not mako any distinction be tweon a hen intended for laying and an other for market. Tho fowl that is to 1)0 marketed may bo gotten into tho fattest condition with advantage, for then tho weight is what brings tho price, but in feeding n laying lieu too much fat is not wontod. In winter the lions do not havo tho exorcise thoy de sire, if tho season is cold, for diiving rains and blinding snows forco them to cither remain under shelter or crowd together. In tho formor caso thoy will eat and grow fat very quickly, if heavily fed, but thoy will not luy at all, as ex posure will provont them from so doing. To havo eggs iu winter do not feed moro than tho fowls will cat up clean. Xover keep feed before them nil the timo. Feod about ono-half of what thoy nocd iu tho morning, and then make them go hungry, and thus compel thorn to scratch in leaves or cut straw during tho day for an occasional grain. At night givo them all tho corn, whoat, and oats thoy will cat. If kept warm, thus fed, and plenty of water suppliod, they will lay all tho winter. Fiold and Farm. In 8coreing Plymouth Rocks by tho .Standard. Ono cxtrcmo dark und one. extrcmo light pullet would bo disquali fied in tho show pen, though shown singly perhapi rather one would be dis qualified. The Standard is very sovero on color of Plymouth rocks and to match in pairs of breeding pens tho rooster and hens must a'l bo alike in color. To scoro high in poinU, they must show on evon light blueiih color all ovor tho body. OKEOON STATE POULTRY ASSOCIATION. 'Ekes In WJatir. Wo havo been getting a fow egga dur ing all this zero weather, cmd whon lions lay with tho thermometer indicating 18 degrees bolow, I always say these hens need encouragement, and thoy shall havo it, and thoy get it, too. For their encouragement a kcttlo is kept es pecially for their use, into which bones, bits of rofuso meats, washing of iilnllot, pots and other utensils are put, and set upon tho stovo to boil. When the noup is cooked, it is thickened with bran or meal, and flavored with a dish nf pepper, either black or red. Tho 'biddies'' like n change, and nil waste materials in cooking, such ns cabbage leave, celery ,0Pi apples, onions and potato parings aro carefully saved. Somotimos I set tho children to chop the to up lino in a wooden bowl with a chopping knifo. Fanny Field says thnt "it is just as easy to have eggs in cold wcathorasinwarm," but it is not so with me, In summer our liens catch their own meat, nnd ent grass for vegctnblo food. In winter, if bens of proper ngo huvo com fort ablo quarters nnd plenty of egg producing food thoy will iny becauso thoy can not holp thcmsolvcs. A neighboring lady had two hens ono winter which alio fed on tablo scrape, nnd never was without fresh oggs. Tho next winter bIio had 14 hens and novcr an egg; thn tablo romps divided among too many... .Thoso wanting ogga next winter should com mence soon. Havo tho chicks hatched early, bo thoy will maturo nnd lay bo foro cold woathcr. My experience is, that if early hatched pullets do not lay beforo winter sets iu thoy will do bo no fconcr than thoso hatched in Sept. During summer rowon nnd clippings of tho lawn ought to bo dried and saved, and gravel producod, to bo given when tho ground is covcrod with snow. A box of road-dust kept in a dry sunny placo will add much to their comfort and enjoyment by keeping them froo of vermin. Raw bones procured at tho butcher's and chopped up with an ax holp to fill tho egg basket during cold woathcr. Givo warm water bo that the fowls' vitality need not bo expended iu thawing ico and snow. A duck will lay moro eggs generally in ono year than a hen. Until tho weather becomos warm their eggs aro as good for cooking or eating ns those from hens. TUTTS PILLS 25 YEARS IN USE. Tho Oreatett Medical Trlnmrh of Uio Ago!
