What it can do litis been proved, when undergone with pur pose uud caution, by the Uakewell brood of sheep, which was actually created simply by prosistout ofl'ort. Much will depend upon the brood mare, and the breeder should consider live things in connection with her blood, frame, health at stinting time, temper and soundness. As to the fust ot these considerations, biccdcrs should fcoleet such a mnro and a good speci men of her class as is of tho class or family which ho desires to reproduce, intending to have them in view when ho selects tho brooding stallion. Tho mnro should bo "roomy" of body, so that sho can carry, and while carrying, nourish well her foal, and therfore, die should bo ot a build which would bo a defect in the nmko up of a stallion. As to health, her blood bhould bo in gotid order, and her heart and ambition in tirotrnto condition, nnd her temper should bo such as to have nude quick to respond to the demands made upon her, plucky nnd obedient to tho voico ami command of her driver. Finally bIio should lw freo from inher ited or trausiuittiblo unsoundness. Ac cidental unsoundness, broken knees, knocked-down hips, and tho like, may bo disregarded, but ringbones, spovius, all enlargements of Iwne, curbs, curby hocks uud defective feet (unless tho ef fect of cureless rlinnintO should rule a marc nut of the breeding stable, with out hesitation or delay, and blind nosa u ulcus it bo tho known result of uccidout will disqualify, too. Spavins, curbs and ringbones may not be congoninl, but tho offspring surely will disclose, theso un soundnesses just as soon as it bo put at strenuous labor ; and cataract, lileo glan ders, is a constitutional disability, whoso appoarnnco cannot be provented, sooner or later. Miles, in hie flno work on breeding, instunco n sories of colts, Otherwise pcncci mnmiwe, wuicii uio played curbs at four or five years, and investigation shnwod thoir dama had curbs, also ; and cataract appeared on tho eyes ot a lot of colt which had fiocn sired by an Irish stallion aflliclcd by that discose.
