To keep apples well they alioulil not only 1)3 Kiithered nt the right timo mul in tlio light niunnor, but thoy Mioultl bo properly aborted and nt once stored whci'O the tcmpenitnru is rool and oven. Soinullinos npplcs arc permitted to get loo ripo beforothoy nrc gathered, and tho result is thoy do not keep as well as if gathered ourlinr; oftentimes thoy nro trnthored too hood, the weather continu ing wtu-ni, tho apples rot in largo j quantities boforo winter sets in. If one has u cold fruit lioiuo to keep fruit in, winter apples may lw gathered tho first week in October with safety, and omo HcasoiiH tho lust week in .September, and lmvo them keep wolli hut if otio has to dopond on the cellar under tho dwelling liouso to keep npplcs it is important thnt thoy should be kept on the trecn, if possiblo, until cool weather. In gathering npplcs there is always loo much hnatc, especially by those who do not mako it a busines to grow fruit; inoro than hnlf of thoso who gather unlcs think if tho fruit can drop on tho grass it will not injure tho apples to shako tlium oil", ko, after picking n few from tho lower limns, inoy win himku u tho rest; but this is decidedly wrong, for it is very dilllcult to got an applo to tho ground by shaking Urn tree without having it striko some of tho limbs on its way to tho ground ; this will bo suro to bruUo it, and thus destroy its kooping qualities. Xo applo Hint is pormittcd to drop to tho ground should bo packod with ihoHo that aio to bo kept until wintor, but should always bo put with those that arc to bo consumed curly in tlio season, whatever may bo its ap pearance. All CIIOU SIIOUlii uiso ou iiiiiuu to himdlo them over ns fow times ns possiblo j tho packages in wliMi they nro to bokoptHhould bo under tho trco when tho fruit is picked, so thnt when tho basket has been filled tho apples can bo taken from it and packed at unco into tlio paekago in which they nro to ho kept until sold. Tho old practice of gathering apples and pouring llioni into a wagon to cart homo and dump into n hoap, to bo picked over in loisuro hours, has boon condemned by all good fruit tor of fruit should havo n liouso built oxnrcsslv for keeping fruit, there can bo but little doubt. Tlio expense need not bo largo, not mora than fcl.OU lor eacii barrel of annlos which nt n rate of 10 nor ! cent., would bo hut fifteen conts for tho safo fitorago of n barrel of apples; tlio gain would bo from fifty cents to $2. "Wlioii apples cannot bo stored whero they can bo kept through tho winter, and como out in March sound enough to poll without repacking, they had better bo sold at gathering timo for what they will bring, or tho shrinkngo and tho exponso of picking over nnd re packing will, ns a rule, bo moro thnn tho liso in price. Massachusetts Ploughman. Manuilng Fruit Trees. That fruit trees roquiro a largo amount of food is obvious. Tito tree- itself takes from tlio soil much material. When a j largo treo is cut down or removed tho j giound whero it stood is found to bo in J it hl lho sh.ino of pork( bccf 1oultry Thorn is one important reifon why apples should ho put up immediately after being gathered, which alone would bo u sullicient reason for packing at oncoaftor taking from tho tree. When mi applo 1b taken from tho treo tho stem is green unit iminer, so unit wnun it i put on the top of another upplo it bends ovor nnd doe no injury, but tutor nn upplo has boon picked a weok or two tho Hlom dries mid hscoiuu still', no Unit when packed on top of another applo tho stem, instead of bending, it often penetrates through tho skin of tho apple, thus lotting tho air in and causing decay in n ory short timo; for this season when it liccomcs necessary to repack apples thoy (should bo at once sent to market when they aio to be immediately sold for con sumption. To have apples to keep well all that havo worms in them should bo rejected and packed with thoso that nro to bo consumed early in lho odinm ; it is truo, occasionally an apple will keep well in spito of lho' woims, but ns a nile wormy apples will not keep much beyond the Ural of January. Apples that are to lo kept for the spring market should bo aborted soils to have lu size, largo and medium size will bring, to retail out by count, us much or moro than if mixed with tho largo ones, all largo ones will always command an extra price. In putting up npplcs for homo ue it lt not so impoitant to t-epcrato tho qualities; only good sound apples should bo put up for winter iw, and while, as a rule, tipples for tho market should bo put in barrels, thoso for homo use never Blioulil, for a barrel is n very un handy thing to take apples fiom. In a Hinall family, whore smernl varieties of apples aro put in for winter use, it it a voiy wasteful practice to put thoin in hnrrc-ls, Ivcmise, it being necessary to have several barrels open at the same time, by thus exposing them to tho air moro rut than nro ued; but it tho dillerent vuriotios bo put in bushel boxes, with covers to them, any particular variety can bo easily obtained, and yet not disturb what uro left, or luiwsing them to tho air but a fow moments. Since tho introduction of stoves anil furnaces tlio cellar of tho dwelling-houoo has becomo an unfit place to stow npphw, if it is desired to havo them keep well. It is hnjwlunt that the temperature whero apples aro kept should bo as near tlio freezing iHiint us possiblo ;!nothing causes fruit to decay moro rapidly than sudden changes of tenipomturo from cold to hot, therefore it should lw tho aim of the fruit grower to prepare a fruit hoiiM) or collar whero it is never very cold or very hot. A fruit-house nlovo ground is letter than n collar, if it bo properly constructed, having double walks tilled with dry sawdust. A house thus constructed can bo much better regulated than a collar, lx'imo tho cold air is mow readily let in tho early part of tho scnou, which is tho timo- most :ieoded, nnd when onco well cooled off it can lo closed nnd tho cool air kept in for uomo timo, when it may again bo open ed during i cool night, nnd thus, with u vory little trouble, tho fruit can lw kopt at a toinponituro best calculated to pro servo it. That tho timo is coining, if it has not already come, when every largo oultiviv a very poor coiuiition. its lormersito is a bnd place in which to plant another tree of tho samo or of a dillerent species. Tho ground long occupied by an ordinal under the ordinary management is genorally found to bo in very poor con dition to produce ordinnry field crops. It ought to bo well manured or dovoted to what is known as "resting crops," such as clover and grass, boforo it can produce good corn or small grain. Tho plant food taken from tho soil to pro duce nn annual crop of apples is enor mous. Singlo trees havo been known to produce, on nn avorngo twenty bushols per year for a long period. It is obvious that such trees lmvo robbod tho soil of most of its fertility for tho cntiro distance traversed by their roots. If no now nutriment is nllordcd, the trocs must coaso to grow nnd stop producing fruit. Tho trees" ennnot movo in scarcli of food us animals, birds, fishes, mid in sects do. Tho food must bo brought to thcin, or thoy will dio of starvation or becomo victims of disease Whilo it is obvious that fruit trees must k fed considerable judgment should bo exercised in tho selection and application of it. Green unfonucntcd stable immures ought not to bo employ ed. Htahlo manure, howovor, if thorough ly fermontod, is excellent. It is improved by stirring it during ono cntiro season, and by forking it over two orthrco times. A compound formed of stablo manure, forest, leaves, muck and turf is also oxcollcnt. Ashes and alr-slackcd limo is nlso highly beneficial, flood results aro ofton obtained by incorporating these fertilizers with tho soil by moans of a spading fork. When this is riono the ground should bo nftorwnrd tramped nearly as hard as it was before tho maiiuro was applied. Good results aro ordinarily obtained by applying tlio manure in tho form of a top-dressing, bittlo labor is required to apply manure in this nmnnor, mul no injury is done to the roots of tho trocs. The eolnblo portions of the manure nro carried down ward by every rain, nnd in timo leach tho soil that is occupied by tho roots. FARM NOTES. Animals that nro troubled with worms may bo safely and speedily relieved by giving them a small doso of tcrpontino two or threo times in their feed. Sunniol Keyscr, of Kansas, wintored 180 head of cattle on sorghum. Tho crop was cut nnd put in small stacks anl from these fed out as needed, giving tho cattle nil thoy would cut. This is tho season of tho Northern States when tho bulk of pork is put up. The right temperature for scalding is 150 to 1(5 degrees. A fow hard wood ashes in the water will help loosen tho scurf so that it can bo easily scraped off. IMPROVEMENT PUREST BEST ' TrO'fxiE.S fcHgAXRST ELEGANCE AND DDBABlUTYi Vegetables lor Horses. Kvcry horso owner should provido a certain amount of vegetables to feed during wintor ns regulators. Potatoes and beats aro both good, and perhaps the cheapest to raio or purchase. It is my practice to feed live or six quarts of these egetables twice a week. I pro paio them as follows : Cut tho roots into pieces not moro than an inch thick, put them into a pail and add sullicient wheat bran to till tho p.iil full, then moisten until tho whole cm bo worked into a mess by means of a stick. A hoio will e.it this with a relish and thrive wonderfully. Tho feed is cheaper than all clean grain, that is with lu feeds a week of the mash le.-s grain will 1h required (o take tho miimul through the winter than if not given, and the horses will bo in much better health and spirits. I lmvo seen onions recomniend'l as n remedy for distemper. A writer in an Kastrrn paper says that tho quickest way t j cure epizootic is to give the-e vegetables. In proof the case of a hoiso is cited, which hud a very severe attack of tho disease, and his owner placed half a dozen onions in tho crib with his regular food. Tho horso ato three of the onions immediately, and by tho timo ho had swallowed them lcgan to cough nnd sneeze nnd prance about, npiK-nring quite indignant and refusing to touch tho remaining onions. For full llvo minutes ho ran at the nose, but ho has not had a cough, a sneeze, nor any symptoms of tho epizootio since, Tri bune and Farmer. Tho farmers of Nebraska nro burning corn for fuel this fall and whiter Twenty years ago Kansas, Iowa and Illinois all did the same. In Nebraska they havo figured to their own satisfaction, and aro confident that it is cheaper to bum com than it is to mH it and buy coal. Soft coal is woith in that State about 2'2 cents a biuhel, and com does not find a ready salo in tho rural markets for more than 12 cents. Experiments base shown that two bushels of corn will produce moro warmth than one bushel of coal, and farmers aro thus burning tho former and saving themselves tho trouble of hauling it to market and drawing tho coal home again. A cattle-raiser of Illinois has so far changed his system of feeding that ho now feeds corn every day all summer to his steers in pasture. Ho has experi mented until ho is convinced that this way of feeding pays best. tho pioducts of the dairy and hen-house. Even if it docs not get full market for grain so fed ho will bo tho gainer in tho end. Tho unpiolitablo trees in nn orchard, if they hnvo sound bodies, should be grafted over to moro productivo varie ties. Now is tho timo to sccuro grafts, which should bo tied in bundles and placed in dry sand in tho cellar until wanted. Horses that havo a rackful of hay beforo them all tho timo will grow poor, when if fed a limited quantity with somo grain they will become fnt. Tho rack tilled with hay becomes offensive from tho horso's breath nnd tho nnimnl must bo partly starved boforo thoy will cat it. Including imported nnd homo grown thoro nro now 25,000 Jerseys registered in this country. Tho crosses of nntivo stock must number ninny timos ns many, and, owing to tho high prices of full breds, it is tho grades that have as yot most benefited averago American farmers. In a large litter of pigs there will always bo somo that aro under sired. If lho larger and stronger pigs are taken from tho sow first and fed liberally thoy will not suffer, while the wenklingsi giving moro of tho sow's milk, will grow rapidly and mako tho littre more even in sizo thnn they would Ikj if nil wore taken on" nt once. Somo farmers in hop growing local ities regard tho skunk as a friend, bo causo ho dostroys tho white grub, which is very injurious in hop yards. Hut, as a rule, tho best uso of a skunk is when ho is dead, and the popular in stinct is right which aims to put him in that condition with tho least ossib!o loss of time. $22 to $900 tfOnZhSH EASypAYMEHTS.OR'REHTED.
