WILL AMU 3 TE I7AEMEU SALEM, OlltiUOiN. JANUARY 2, 1884. A Word to Mothers. Eaht Pohtlanii, Deo. 18, 188i. Editor Willamette Fsrnisr; I never tako up u copy of tho FAitMKit without looking over tlio lottos writton by the dear children. A lady remntked, I never think of looking nt thorn, I want something more interesting. I liopo not ninny mothers think of them so lightly. "What can wo expect from their swnll minds? A child 8 tout is ns puro ns tho driven snow, benutiful ns a cherub angel, spotless and innocent; it is tho chart of it mini or woninn, yet to bo filled with tho elements of charac ter, which aro fir.H outlined by tho pa rents. Now is tho timo to encourage and assist them j it is now that thoy re ceive theso impressions and contract such habits, which impel them to honor tho good and true, or towards tho ovil and false. I feel that Aunt Hetty should bo highly appreciated in every houto whero tho paper is taken. She has to givo timo every week to look over tlWo littlo letters and pieparo thorn for tho press. Dear mothers', do you read tho kind ad vice she gives to each and ovory ouo of them. Tho day will puroly come, if spared, when tlioo dear little hearts will return her thanks for her time and kind ness and feel that much of their nobility and goodness wero duo to her advice-; and I dare cay many sorrowful mothers like myself will lui'vo the pleasure of glancing over thes'o lines, written by ouo whoso littlo hand is still in death, and you will almost worship them. Then lot us cherish her loving inllueneo and never again say or think tho-o things which concern children to bo of no im portance. Tho littlo things which they sec and hear about them mould them for otcrnity. Children arc moro cosily led to bo good by examples o' loving kind ness and tales of well-doing than threat ened into obedience by records of sin and crimo and punishment. Then strive to impress on tho minds of children sin cerity, truth anil bonovoloncc. How Heeling theso years of Hiiklhood pass away. Wo may bo nearly over our rough pathway of lifo, but lot us mako tho years of children pass as pleasantly ns possible. Thoy soon strido rapidly for ward in thoir courso of lifo whilo wo Mnust niovo slowly back. They will soon regard us in tho light of memory, and look upon othors in tho light of hope. Thou let it bo ono of our grcnt desires to impress upon our children whnt thoy must need, and let us not forgot that ono great duty nbovoall, that is tho duty wo owo to our Janitor. Touch thorn that God is lovo and without His itifmito goodness and mercy we can do nothing. I onco hoard it remarked, "thcro is no ncod of prayer;" I considor that prayer is tho key to open tho day, and tho bolt to shut it in at night. Ileal inured de votion knows no prayer but that which comes from tho depth of its own feeling. In tho darkest night lot a prayer bo of fered up from a puro heart will reach to hoaven's height and bring a blossing. When tho heart is full and bitter thoughts como crowding too thickly for utterance, how littlo can words of sympathy from frionds roliovo, but what rcliof tho bursting heart may find in prayer. It is not ovory ono who is ablo to pray in tho prcseuco of throngs ; tho timid tonguo falters, and our thoughts strugglo in vain for uttcranco, but I hopo every mother will tench her children to repent tho "Iml's Prayer," in accent of tendor trust which if wo only think of it includos everything. Truo roligion has in it nothing weak or snd ; it en larges tho heart, it cnoblcs tis to bear tho sorrows of life, nnd it lessens tho pnnga of death. Whoover thinks of lifo as something that could exist in its best form without roligion is in ignorance. Wo aro often called upon to pass through eovoro trials, sometimes sick ness, rovcrscs of fortune, and even that torriblo ordoal of giving up ono or moro of our beloved jowols, we feel sad and dejected, our hearts aro broken, our spirits roduced to soberness, and wo lind ourselves asking this question, is there no solace, must wo onduro this agony? Ood, who governs this world in mercy and wisdom would never hnvo allowed us to bo afllictcd without giving us n E0H9O of feeling that comfort and happi ness awaits us. Ho tells us when trouble presses heavily to lean on Jesus' broast, and in his precious promise wo will find quiet rest. Somo natures perhaps noed to bo tried by suffering to ovoko tho ex cellence that is in them. Then givo moro nttcntion to teach tho children nnd pre pare them to go forth in tho world ns good nnd useful mon and women, and for that glorious future Yours respect fully, Mns. E. J. Pkick.
