Tho Farmer's Mos.
Tlio difforciit breeds ot hog lmvo
Ihcir fust friend", and no doubt they

not euro to coll to rniso for breeding pur
poses, should Htrlvci to gut u bog that
will ninko him tho most money for tho

hog nliould have a good coat of hair;
not hristlof, but lmir. A black hog will
not ,'ft scurvy on hi-) back ; iho huh will
not blinter him. A bog chould lmvo a

disposition nor yet too wild. My the
ptuchasii of tho right kind of tnalo pig
tho feeder can mice ju-t such pigs iih ho
wants to feed, and lmvo much moro prof
itable and healthy uniinal.4 than ho can
buy. ,
Tlio brood cowK can bo run on clover
pasture in Miinuieratvery little expense,
and if provided with some good clovor
buy in winter it will reduce their feed
billH. Not enough attention in paid to
providing good pabtuieH for pigs ; they
are generally kept in a barren lot with a
goncrotM Hized mud-hole in it, in which
the water in ho foul Unit just the Hinell of
it is Hickening, li t alone having to drink
it. Ah for a change of pasture, it is
never thought of, on account of the
I rouble of fencing it. The eciuiblo way
to provide for them is to have land tie
voted to their uho wi the pigs can have a
good sweet pasture of clover all tho time.
Do not keep them on tho sumo old poi
Honed ground for ten years, but when tho
grnsH gets run out plow it and take olT
a couple of crops ; then rceod to clover,
and then let their heirships take fresh
comfort, health and fat from tho now
fresh ground and grass. This ground
will then supply the living of tho pigs,
while in the other way of doing tho pig
lot is full of weeds, bare of grass, and tho
bare ground covered with mud and hog
wallows. llrecders' Journal.
Barn-Collar ana (Swamp Muck.
A ham cellar has many valuable tines.
Not tho least is that tho iiUh and other
vermin have no harliors.as they lmvo
under ground Moors. Then tho manure
Is handled easier; it is all scraped out of
tho gutters through tho trapdoors and
goes down into tho cellar upon a good
Ixxl ot dry swamp muck, which absorbs
and dcordori.oH it, and keeps tho ntublo
ubovo Hwcet and clean. The manure is
saved from washing by rains and its full
value prctervod. The best use is thus
made of tho manure, and its bulk and
value is doubled if one will only provide
plenty of swamp land muck, or forest
leaves, if he has thuse and not the other,
to receive the urine and mi.v with the
solid matter. A very bad iini of a man
ure cellar is to turn tho swine into it
under the excuse that they will workup
tho manure. To nw nothing oho is mi
horrible as to ceo pigs .dloving in Mich
a place and picking food out of the
dreadful mess. No wonder pork to
made should have a bail repute.
Hwampninck is of exceedingly gloat
value. The fertilizer manufacturer has
no monopoly of the use of figures, and,

Now is tho time to dig it ; pile it on the
banki lot it drain aud-dry, and in the
winter put it everywhere that it may
soak up every drop of valuable liquid
about tlio stables and yards.
Shoeing Vicious Horses.
Handling a vicious horses, at any
time and under any circumstances, is a
thing requiting judgment and skill, but
when work requiring bitch caro us tho
adjustment of tho shoo to the hoies
foot is to bo performed, it is doubly tin
portailt that lie bo kept quiet. The work
is usually poorly enough done at best.
The lloreo Sheer and Hardware Journal
of Chicago sjiya :
Wo liao noticed very many inquiries
regarding tho host method of enforcing
Mii.om.t mill i-rwvl liohaviorof vicious and
unruly hon-os during tho operation of
shooing. We lieliovo that tho most
vicious horo can' bo shod without tho
use of a sling or stocks, without being
oast or tied, by tho simple uso of tho
noso twitch, a small rtiek about two feet
long, at one end of which must bo at
taobod n loop of stout string, and on
the other end two pieces of tho samo
kind of string. Waco tho loop over tho
noso of tho animal, and by gentle, steady
twisting, tighten it until tho horeo be
gins to bat at tho oyca or blink, not too
tight, but just moderately, then tie-tho
other otid of tho twitch to tho halter.
This method is an old ono in perfor
mance of various surgical operations,
firing, etc.; it is simple, and if it will
compel quiet behavior under tho firing
iron, lwe cannot seo why it should not bo
equally useful in tho caao of horseshoeing,
involving no pain whatever. Woadviso
a trial, and will bo glad to noto the re
sults Katso Oood Horses.
Good horses of any description always
lmvo and will command good and ro-
munorntivo ricos for tho risk nliil
trouble atlendent on their breeding nnd
rearing, and if breeders would only boar
in mind that "liko producci like" and
breed from none but sound and perfect
animals, with a duo regard to the do
Hcription of howos to be produced, tho
world would bo no longer 'bo llllcd with
diseased and mongrel nondescripts
yclept horsi b devouring daily twice tho
value of their earnings. The very
diseases and inlirmities of mares aro not
infroquently the cause of their being
selected to breed from.
A man isoscssed of a ninro incapnblo
of earning an honest livelihood. Itcst,
or a summer's run is necessary, and that
this may not bo lost sho is put to tho
nearest horse, in order that that sho
may have an opportunity of handing
down to posterity hor own worthless
iichs ami perpotualing hor owner's mis
fortuno in tho possession of such a breed.
False economy foolish and fatal de
lusion! The unfortunate breeder per
severes with his prineiploof ''liko produc

until, worn out in pocket or in patience,
ho gives it up as a bad affair and de

Wo lmvo been requested to give an
outline of tho volume of water of tho
different streams in Southern Oregon,
their dept and dimensions, amount of
agricultural land, etc. Wo aro not at
present in possession of tho dato nec
essary, consequently, unable to givo
moro than a faint outline regarding this
matter. Tho Uinpqua is the largest
river in Southern Oregon. Itcxtondsa
long distance from tho sea, through the
Coast Jtango until within live- miles of
Uosehurg, where it branches into what
is known us the North and South forks.
Tho South fork overlaps tho headwaters
of Itoguo river, tho mouth of which is dis
tant from tho mouth of tho Umpquti
about IM) miles. Thcro is considerable
farming laud on the Umpipia and in
tho valley contiguous. It has a bar at
the mouth.
The next in size, whore length is to
bo considered, is lloguo river. It Is full
of obstructions, being shoal but a short
distance from Iho mouth, and possessing
a bad bar. It passes through rugged
mountains, and what are called meadows
the l!ig and JJttlo meadows are but
the grassy slopes aie of Alpine declivities.
Where it passess through Jackson
county, wo llnd considerable open land,
valuable for giaiu and stock-raising.
Near its mouth there is some good farm
ing laud.
Next, wo coiiio to the I'oqiiille. This
river has a shoal bar, but at the oresent
time effort are being miulo by the
government to improve it. After cross
ing the bar this river is thodoopist
among those mentioned, and uvvcN .f
the same draught of water can acoild
higher up than n any oilier on this
coast, without meeting obstructions.
There is considerable farming land, ex
tending the whole length of the rier,
on I Kith sides, and on the North, South
and Middle forks.
Tho next is Too Hay -a misnomer,
unicss its advocate will show 11 where
in the difference lies between it and tho
I'liipuun. The truth is that for ten miles
from its mouth, tho most vivid imagina
tion cannot draw a single, distinctive
feature. For that distance from th" sea,
the apparently wide urea of water covers
extensive mud tlats which aiv dry at
low tide, leaving a narrow tortuous
chanel in both the I mpqua and Coos.

Tho principal farming land is on Coos

of tlio TJmpuun, and while both nro bad,
they nro tho best that wo have. The

may bo properly dbignated as the i'i

bar, is narrow and deep for a short
distnneo, but then expnmlB and divides
into two branches. Thoro is Bomo farm

not prepaied to say how much.
All these river. pnss through sect inns

and other minnals abound in every
p irtion of it. Tho rivers contain fish of
the ilnot quality, and salmon in abun

snilibriou", rather damp in winter, owing
to tho provalanco of rain, but then wo
cannot expect to have a monopoly of all
tho good things. We plant and nro not

which' oll'sots tl.o inconveniences duo to

In giving thcBo dctnils, wo nro aware
of ono thing nnd that is that with our
limited knowledgo as to tho genornl
statistics, wo nro unable to do full justice
to tho subject. Wo aro nlso uwnro thnt
eonio will object to our calling Coos bay
a river. Shakespeare says : "Call n roso
by any other name, 'twill smell as sweet."
Custom has madu that name familiar,
but custom should not be nllowed to
prevail against that which is correct.
Wo lmvo during a period of !1(5 years
become familiar with several ports and
their tributary stromas on this coast,
notably, tlio' Sacramento, San .Joaquin,
Port Orford, Coquille, Coos. t'mpqiiA
nnd Ynquinn. Wo consider oursclfn fair
pilot on tho two first, and on the three
last, and wo lmvo no desire to detract
from the merits of any. Having been
raised on the icn, our experience has
boon to esthunto our distance nnd to tako
our departure from objects which aro
immovable, and laid down with strict
repaid to tho truth, thus avoiding the
danger of dashing on tho rocks of un
certainty, doubt, predjudico and ig
norance. Tlio term departure, in tho
last scntancc, has a nautical significance.
Tako Caro of Your Horeo.
Hard driving, after hearty eating, is
moro injurious thn'n hearty eating after
hard driving. A farm horso, assigned to
the uuncciistomcil task of makinga long
journey, should be allowed his own timo
for it. Start early, drivo moderately,
giving him nn early and Jong nooning,
with a good rubbing down before feed
ing. If tho end of the journey cannot Ikj
reached early in the evening, Btop for
supper and, after another rest, ho may
be driven a few miles further. A case of
extreme necessity only can justify driv
ing a horse in the evening that hns
worked hnrd nil day.
