For several years past tho matter of se
lecting potatoes for seed has been fre
quently discussed, some preferring cer
tain parts of tho potato while othors pre
ferred using tho whole seed or n certain
numberof eyes. It. is demonstrated that
tho seed end is in every respect equal to
nny other portion of the potato, with n de
cided advantage in its favor so far as
weight of crop is concerned, though the
actual number of the best potatoes canto
from tho center eyes. The vitality ot
oyes utol ns seed improves according to
their terminal position upon tho potato.
The yield in proportion for an aero is
200 bushels for tho butt oyes, 259
bushols for tho center eyes and 2S2
bushels for tho Heed-end oyes. Tho ox
pcrinionts demonstrato that singlo eyes
used as seed yielded a satisfactory crop
per hill, whilo tho crop was also more
uniform in quality than from wholo
potatoes or ordinary cuts, and yielded n
smaller proportion of small potatoes than
ordinaiy cuts of wholo potatoes. In com
paring ordinnry ctita with wholo potatoes
moro favorabfo results wero derived
from tho cuts than from the wholo ones,
nnd especially so when tho amount of
seed used is substmcted from tho wholo
crop. It was demonstrated that single
oyes when cut deeply, so as to contain
somo substance, gavo much bettor yields
than when cut shallow. Early planting
gavo bolter results. in quality and total
yield than whon later planting won
practiced. In regard to distance between
tho toed in tho hills it was demonstrated
that closo planting diminished tho
yield of good potatoes and increased tho
vield of suinll potatoes by measure, whilo
f.Ttilizois leftover from a previous so ison
exercised a marked infhicnco upon tho
crop. In tho experiments of othors tho
planting of wholo iiotntoes scorned to
givo tho best results, but when tho largo
quantity of seed so used is subtracted
from tho yield it is doubtful if nny ud
vantngo is gained when tho cost is con
sidered. Tho seed ends may bo used for
producing largo potatoes by placing tho
teed at a greater distauco in tho rows,
nnd it is probablothatby using less seed
nnd moro thorough tillago bolter results
may bo obtained in proportion to lubor
nnd amount of seed used.
Horio Constipation.
Tho condition can genornlly bo ic
lioved by giying a feed of four quarts of
apples or potatoes every night foi a
week. Try this for a week and if satis
factory results nro not obtained place
a kottlo containing four quarts of watei
on tho tiro. Add to this ono pint of
clean flaxseed. Doll until thoroughly
cooked and tho liquid is reduced about
ono-fourth by ovnnoration. Put four
qunrts of swcot wlio.it bran in a clean
pail and ndd n tablospoonful of salt, i
Tour tho llaxsccd tea, with tho seeds, i
into tho pml containing tho bran. Mir
tho samo with n clean stick or other
implement until tho bran is thoroughly
wet, thon cover closely with something
to retain tho steam, and set nsido until
cool enough to bo cnton ; thon placo tho
pail containing tho mash in tho manger
of tho horse. If ho is not inclined to
ent it pour a pint of dry oats in tho
centre, and boforo ho finishes tho oats
ho will bo likely to get n tnsto of tho
mush. If tho horso is worked six days
out of tho week, givo tho mash tho
night beforo ho is to linvo a day's rest,
ltepoat this onco a week through tho
winter. Many horsos aro benefitod by
giving them from two to four quarts of
dry wheat bran dnily, dividing it into
two feeds nnd giving it with tho grain
morning and night. This hns n ten
dency to prevent constipation and givo
tho coat a bright, glossy uppearauco.
Somo horses will thrive on six quarts of
oats nnd four quarts of bran daily, than
upon eight qunrts ot oats without tho
bran.
Quinco cuttings may bo taken now
and troated in tho 6amo way as currants.
Cut this year's wood, nearly back to tho
old growth, and select only thrifty cut
tings from thrifty limbs, ns thoy will
mnko moro hardy bushes. Whilo moro
cuttings may tnko root if not cut as far
back ns to tho old wood, yot they will
riot bo as hardy, and a loss number will
livo through Urn ensuing year. Tho
high price of quinces and tho caso of
growing them should encouiago fanners
td put in more of them. They liko a
moist soil and liberal manuring.
THE MORAL POINT OF VIEW.
While wo do not npprovo tho common
uso of tobacco, bops and barley, nor tho
manufacture of corn, rye nnd wheat
into whisky and apples into spirits and
grapes into wine and brandy, wo grow
those articles for sale and nsk no
questions. That there is a moral ques
tion involved of great inportanco is not
to bo denied and ninny n man would
decline to produeo the articles named
if he was to bo responsible for tie con
sequences. He sells in ignorance of the
coming uso and asothorueare possible,
that nro legitimate nnd proper from tho
mornl point of view ho is absolved by
tho world from complicity with tho
browcr, wino maker or distiller. The
following paragraph bring tho matter
homo to o cry producer.
At a meeting of tho tobacco growers
of tho Connecticut valley a man rose in
tho audience and offered a roolution
evidently not provided fr In the pro
gramme, ''that tho uso of tobacco ought
to bo encouraged in ths public schools."
To say that the convention was "set
back" by thN way of putting the ease is
a mild statement of the situation. A
dead silence endued, only broken bv the
mover saying: "Why do you balk,
gentlemen? If this is legitimate busi
ness why not push it?"
There were fathers llure with glowing
sons in tho public schools, and they
would look with anything lint approval
on an attempt to start up u brink cigar
trado among tliom by some enterprising
agent. Tobacco was it good thing to
mako nintiev with, but not juH the stuir
for bo.VH to use, at least not their boys.
Tliov did not puss the resolution.
The writer, moralizing upon the fnct,
cites an it.Mii of evidence that "lolmcro
leads to stiMiur drinks ns naturally in
wntor Hows down hill."
"Jerry Mc.Vulov, the lefoimed rivir
piiute, who lately died at his mission
post in New York, hnd one or two down
falls afttr he liegan u bitter life, nnd
It wns not until he quit tobacco that lie
could keep his temperance pledge.''
