When wo wero Knut, in Dakota, Minnesota and Illinois, two weeks ago, wo learned that prices at Chicago and dhis tide of theio correspond almost exactly with notations at Tortland and tho interior. Corn sustains a fair price and pays this year much better than wheat in thoM States. The pro ent tpiotAtlons for wheat at Portland arc ?1.10 to $i.li5 per cental for valley and $1.02 to if 1.0.1 for 'Walla Walla, being tho kmho rates ns Imvo prevailed. It assorts that tho harvested crop in Ifiiflnnd is only half a fairyiold, and 120,000 cut. fhort of last yc.ir. Last year 11 was said wonnany woum navo 50,000 Imlos for export, but had only 10,000, and will not havo moro this year. Now York has -15,000 bales short of last year. J no lMcitic coast was put down at 75,000 bale", but owing to various causes thousands of bales wero spoiled in Oregon and Washington, so tho crop cannot exceed 00,0X) bales. For twenty llvo years back stocks of yearlings havo never been so short us now. Whilo this is true, misstatements aro boing niatlo against growers, stating that hops aro plenty and prices must rulo lower. Dealers want to buy tho crop at priccw far below valuo. This statement is plain, and if tho figures glvon aro correct, its conclusions cannot ho denied. If hop growers havo not yet sold their crop it will bo worth their whilo to hold 011 to it and tee what tho result will bo. Wo quolo nbovo what thoy say about hops. Thoy assort that tho world is short of hops and that tho scarcity will insuro a good prico beforo tho season is much older. This week wo visited the warehouse of Messrs. Popo it Hcdding, this city; thoy havo a thousand bales storod and expect to havo fivo hundred moro noon. Those gentlemen havo taken great interest in tho hop tr.ulo and intend in future to dovoto themselves moro especially to it. Wo aro surprised to Uurn that not over 500 bales of Or 01(011 hops havo yet been sold, and tho H.11110 is truo of Washington Territory. Th Hcason hns witnessed henvy yields being vory propitious until rains caino in picking time and causod both loss and damage. Lano county only saved 1,000 out of 1,100 in hoi hop yards, be cause holp could not bo had to pick thoni boforo they spoiled. The yield has been largo, somo yards in Marion county, near, lluttevillo, gavo 11,000 lbs per acre, and some yards in Lano county gavo 2,800 lbs to tho noio. Tho averago yield in Lano county was 1,500 lbs and at Uuttovillo, Marion county, 1,000 was realized per acre. The total yield of hops on this coast wa for 18SI, about as follows: Oregon, (bales) 10 (MX) Washington, (bales) Hi.uiMi California, (bales) lli'.tHHi California grows tho best artnli m her Itussiau river hops aro equal b the very liest known in Kurope. The pro- duet of tho co 1st htaiuls well, though only one-half of tho crop of Oregon and Washington ranks as choico with fifteen Kr will, good, fifteen per cent, fair, and ono-tlfth of all aro inferior. Choico hops should bo worth 18o to 10c ; good, 17o to 18o; fair, 10 to ltljo; and infer ior will range from lOo to 15o, less cost of storage ami 5 jver cent, commission. rltnk ui,irL'..t .lull niifl nrif.w iifiminnt there was a slight improvement early in November that is now lost, but may lx regained any day.
