Kdltor Willamctto Farmer :
rienso publish thnt Lnno County To
monti Grnngo will meet on Sntitniny,
Novcmbor 22, 1881, with Springfield
Grange. All Patrons in good attunling
invited. A. 0. Jr.swiNoa, Soc.
The Order in Connecticut.
Tlio Onlor of Patrons of Husbandry is
bound to tnko on now lifo in Connecti
cut tho coining winter. Lebanon Grunge,
organized Inst winter, hns had nn influ
ence for good far beyond its own bord
ers. Onu session of tho Stuto Hoard
meeting at Moridiau in December will
bo givon up to discussion of tho objects
and principles of tho Order. Mortimer
Whitehead, of Now Jortsoy, will deliver
tho address. This will bo tho beginning
for nn nwnkoning that will load to tho
reorganization of tho Connecticut Stato
Grnngo and tho foundation for Subordi
nate Granges. Tho vigorous brain and
hand of Itov. A. L. Lovcliuul, lato of
Granby, will bo missod in this work, but
others will como forward to lead tho
way. Tho failuro or success oi any
great effort, principle or party is not do
pondont on any ono man. If it wore, it
would not bo a groat object. So tho
Grango will grow, spreading its benign
nnd helpful inllucnco tftUil all hnvo bo
como acquainted with nnd bonolltod by
itfl social, oducntional and co-opcrativo
features. Grnngo Ihillctin.
Tho Grnngo Bulletin in a recent issuo
says: "Let thoso Granges that liavo
bcon and nro now successful toll of their
methods of work nnd what thoy havo
accomplished, giving thrir fellow Patrons
tho bonofit of their experionco. On tho
tho other hand lot thoso who hnvo failed
toll us of tho causo that led to their de
cline. Sometimes tho record of n failuro
is of ns much benefit as tho story of suc
cess." A good set of carpontor tools should
bo owned by every farmer, with as much
of a blacksmith's kit ns ho can find use
for. A farmer with sorao tnsto for me
chanics can do much building nnd ro
pairing at times when other work is not
pressing. Oftou tho timo lost in sending
nn implement to tho shop for ropairs is
moro than it would tnko to repair it, if
tho farmer had rcquisito bits, bolts, and
screws within reach. Tho writer of this
paragraph mnnyyearsngobuiltn smith's
shop for his own uso, hired two hands to
do his own work and that of his neigh
bors who choso to patronizo tho shop,
nnd in less than six months, had learn
ed to mnko open ring, links in chains,
ami such work nbout ns woll ns nn
ordinary mechanic, nnd to shoo n lioreo
entirely satisfactory, to himself nt least.
And tho beauty of it was it took less
timo to do such jobs than it did to go to
a shop less than a milo and a half
distant. Hotter still, perhaps, tho little
capital required in the investment paid
an annual dividend that ought to satisfy
n today's railroad or national bank
monopolist, Jaurnal of Agriculture.
Burying Mire.
A paper rocently read beforo tho French
Academy of Medioino expressed tho
writor's conviction that ono in ovory 5,
000 persons is hurried alive. Tho esti
mate, howover oxnggoratcd, is not cal
culated to allay any apprehension which
is conspicuous among tho French people,
nnd which was lately brought to publio
attention by tho President of tho Cham
ber of Notaries that oxpress instructions
nro given in ono will out of overy ten to
havo the heart pierced by a qualified sur
geon beforo tho lid of tho coilin is screw
ed down.

About Dogs and Monkeys.
Tho monkey is generly supposed most
nearly to rescmblo man, but thcro nro
points in which tho dog comes closer ts
us. For example, restlessness of mind.
A dog requires excitement, nnd Imb n
craving for the interest of outward ob
jocts. Feed him well, nnd shut him up
alone in nn apartment, ami he will suffer
under cuui liko n lino gentloman, and
boconio troublesome and uneasy for want
of occupation or amusement. If tho
window bo loft open, ho will find resource
in looking out of it, and will divert him
self with tho passing scene, nnd tnko n
lively concern in tho doings of othor
dogs in tho street. This is a plcasuro
which wo trace in no other animal, and
it is not, indeed, obsorvablo in nil dogs,
Newfoundlands npponrs peculiarly prono
to it. Thoy aro eminently social. Wo
shall nover forgot n Newfoundland dog
bolonging to n provision dealer, with
whom wo had n strcot acquaintance It
was his business to go about in tho wagon
ns n protector of tho good things therein
and as ho rodo nlong streets, most man
ifest nnd most livoly was tho interest ho
took in tho moving scene. No duchess
in tho land ever lounged in lior enrrnjjo
with a moro luxurious or a graceful air,
than our frioud exhibited in tho wagon.
His fuvoritd attitudo was lying with
his forcpnw dangling over tho front, and
his great head lolling on them. Any
long stoppage, wo romarked, mrulo him
uneasy ; nnd ho displayed his ploasuro
when his enrrage was again in motion,
by dancing from sido lo sido liko a parrot
on its perch, and uttering n quick bark
of uatisfaction,
Tho curiosity of dogs is another quali
ty which thoy havo in common with our
Id ml. No matter how fatigued n dog
may be, if he is taken inton strnngo np
nrtment, ho will not lio down to rest un
til ho hns taken a survey of tho room
nnd smolt of overy jirticlo in it. Dogs,
ns wo hnvo beforo attempted to provo,
nro rogues' nnd clients liko men, nnd thoy
nro also murdorcrs, with a conscience of
their criminality. In packs of hounds
it is not very uncommon to And n dog
killod by his commits, and wo onco
heard n foxhuntcr describo his visit to a
konnel nftcr ono of thoso nssnssinntions.
Hnlf n dozen of tho long-cnrod bow
wows wcro squatting on their haunches
in ono corner with particularly gravo
faces, which mennt to speak nn
innocenco thnt was unluckily belied
by tho spots on their coats. Whilo
ho wns examining tho dody of tho deceas
ed, thoy kont yawning nnd licking their
chops with their long red tongues, as if
tney unci no mnnncr oi concorn In wliot
was going on; but it wns ovident that
thpy wcro by no means oasy in their
minds. Tho dogs which boro no mark
of tho frny, nnd which wcro presumed to
bo innocent, moved nbout ns usual with
quito n different air.
Southoy onco wrote nn claborato nr-
ticlc, showing how dogs syllogized, dis
played tho reasoning faculty of humnn
boings. Among other illustrations ho
trnvo was thnt of a dog who loses sight of
liia master, nnd follows by scent till tho
roau branches into three ; ho smolls at
tho first, and nt tho second, nnd then,
without smelling farther, gallops along
tho third.
In roguory, tho monkoy rosomblos tho
human spccios moro closely than tho
dog. Lot nny ono visit tho monkoys in
n monngcrio at feeding timo, and ho might
imagino himself nt tho Stock Exchango
of Now York, so univorsal and unprofit
able is tnoir system oi overreaching.
Outsido tho bars of each monkey's cago
nnd in tho very ccntor, is n pan which is
filled with his nnnointcd mess, nnd it
comes to pass that no monkoy cats his
own supper. Each endeavors to rob his
neighbor, nnd in tho attempt, leaving ins
own ungnrded, ho is himself robbed by
lus nolghbor. As m committing tho
theft they nro obliged to stretch out
thoir arms to tho full oxtcnt, nnd with
nn awkward inclination, half tho spoil
is split by tho way, nnd tho wholo siminl
society consequently loses hnlf its moal
by its roguery. Tho speculative man
is not moro soolish. Tho cunning strok
era of trado aro not moro impolitic.
An In-Grown Kill.
Much suffering is duo to tho corners
of toe-nails growing in tho flesh. Tho
rcmody is very simple. It is n mistako
to cut tho nails short nt tho eoro corners;
it tho nail is long, cut tho uppor edgo
straight across, or in n croscont shnpo,
tho crescent in tho center, leaving tho
comors untouched. Then scrnpo tho
middlo of tho nail for its wholo length
quito thin. Tho scraping may bo dono
with n knifo, but much moro rendily
roadily by tho use of a bit of froshly
brokon window glass. Tho center of
tho nail should bo mndo so thin that n
slight prcssuro upon tho corners will
bend it In eomo cases It may bo woll
to put a littlo lint or cotton under tho
cornors of tho nail to aid in tho bond
ing. Of courso tho avoidnnco of tight
boots will suggest itself to nil.
Stocking the Farm.
A writer of somo oxporienco in farming
says : A farm can bo stocked with sheep
for loss money than with cattle, horsos
or hogs. Sheep will como nearor utiliz
ing everything that grows on tho farm
than any other animal. Less labor will
bo requirod for getting feed and stock
togcthor. Tho returns will como in
sooner nnd of tenor thnn any other farm
stock oxcept hogs. Less money is ro
quired for sheltering and fencing and
less labor is involved in hcrdinir, whero
outsido pasture is accessible, and pre
ferred. And finally, a.handiomo infiomo
on the investment can be had without
the sale of the animals themselves. i
