In fuel wo have had considerable call for Mich litemtuio from hiicIi localities. Tho following in Interest ing and (o the point. Wo think Mint Goo3 buy and Yiiqtiiiut bay, would bo a good' Kection for the cranberry and hope Mr. Upton, of the (Inotto will inform uh on tho Hiibjcct through hi paper. Hooks on cranberry culture can bo obtained by mldrulnjf tho American Agrioulturint, Now York City. Any in formation or practical c.vpurioucoou this subject will bo thankfuly rocolvod by tho Wii.!..jiKTTi: K.Rfi:i:. In coiinling upon kiicccsiIii cittiiberry oulturo, there nuiHtboa comploto eontrol of water, that tho land may bo lloodul and tho water drawn oil" nt pleasure. Wo do not mean to say that cranberries cannot bo grown, and grown tumwuilly, without Hooding, for that would not bo true. Hut Hooding is a great aid. It gives full control of tho vines, prevent ing insects fioui getting a Mart in the spring. It alto helps to keep down in jurious weed. In this section, or rather in Wisconsin, the water U ii-nully drawn oil' toward the Inst of May, it having re mained from just before the setting in of cold weather tho previous winter. It ahould bo let on before tho ground has frozen html, hut not before it In-gins to freeze. Tho depth of water should be HUllicieut to prevent the plants from freezing, which in tho North would be at least two feet. In nil Mvtioiiti where thoro are to bo late fixntc there should be no hurry in drawing oil' tho water in the spring. It will pay nut tube in haste. As long as the water keeps cool there is no danger of its hurting the cranberry plants. This is the only Hooding that is done. Sometimes in eases of drouth water is let on the bed', but this should never be in such quantities as to deserve thu iiauio of Hooding. The cranberry may be propagated from tho seed, but it is not the be.-l way. If this pint 1 is adopted mw the feeds in tltilli ami Keep the ground free from weuls, which should Uulono either by hoeing or mulching with Hand, if it ts on low land. J Jut the plant is very ciiMly propigtited. The ines may be set out whole; or they may bo out up and the pieces saved, livery joint will produce a plant. In preparing a cranberry bed. sand will bo found very useful, l'ven if the eoil, that is sonn'timos excellently Hit anted for growing cranberries, is not too rich -which is Hunetinies the ruse tho sand on tho suifaee will keep thu weeds down, bciiles making the surface ojwn and friable. The miuh need to Im) thoroughly pivp.irod There should bo a ditch dug all around it to take thu surface water t-o that the land may ho cleaned. The surface water drawn oh, clear ull every iiieiimhraueo, burning whatever will burn, if you are so inclin ed, provided tho ashes will not injure tho soil. Some remove the surface soil to tho depth o( a half it foot but the use of Hitud on tho surface will accomplish precisely tho same insults. Make an embankment around the plant with tho soil that has hem taken from tho ditch if it is compact enough, but if not make thu embankment of omo other soil, l'roparo your land one rcuson Maw planting, as that will givo opportunity to get ml of all tho weeds and to other wise make tho ground clean. It will bo very ditllcalt'toremovo brush, roots, etc, after tho place has been planted. When thu laud is solid enough to plow and hariou do it by all means. Having got tho laud level and clean, put on thu band to a depth of from four to eight inches, the iiiituility Wing determined by tho condition of tho soil. A looo soil will miulro more than one that is compact, as tho sand will sink into tho former. Fix Hood-gates in tluHinbankmeuta and you uru ready for planting. Plant in tho spring or fall, spring be ing pieferable. If planted in tho fall, the bod mast bo Hooded daring tho wintor. Set in rows 2 to -l feet apart, according to the character of tho plants you nre sotting, tho object always being to cover tho whole, surfaco with vinoa as quickly as possible. Plant in small hnloa nnd pros tho earth closely about them. If tho vines are cut ami pieces planted, do il with a viow of coveting tho ground with vines as beforo stated j if planted tlin ninwa mnv tin nlnntnil in rows twelvo to eighteen inches apart. Western Kuril. Keeping Onions. Tho groat point in keeping oniona through tho wintor in to get thorn dry and koop thorn dry nnd cool. A damp warm cellar is ono of tho worst places. If you do not want to uso them until Bpring, a good place is to put them In a dry barn or loft and cover them over with Btrnw or liny u fool or more thick, nnd let them froezo nnd stay frozen until thoy thaw of their own nccord. They should not bo handlod whilo frozen, un less you wish to uso thorn immediately. Wo have kept onion boIb by mixing them with dry mnlt sprouts, say not less than one bushel of sprouts to a bushel of sols. Wo placed a layer of sprouts two inches deep at the bottom of a largo bin, and then a layer of sols four inches deep, and then two inches of sprouts, and fo on until tho bin was full, when wo plac ed a foot or a o of sproutn on top. Tho bin was in a bay lofl, where It was ex posal to host. In the spring tho hets came out in the most perfect condition none decayed and none sprouted. Conreo, dry brnn, would answor tho purpose. "Wo onco throw a quantity of onions by the eidoof a'row of evergreens, and covered them with straw thick enough to keep tlioin dry. They remained thoro all winter and eamo out in good order in the spring. A good plan is to koop tho onions In slaltoil Doxcs noHitugti misnei onoxs. I'lnco then) boxes in the celloron shelv es, or raised a fow inches from the ground, and witli Fpncos between tho boxes for tho nirto circulate. Agricul turist. ihatt wa Fruno in Autumn 7 Wo guy, decidedly, yoi, provided tho question npplies to nowly-planted trees tho.-o set last spring or within a few yours. Says tho American Agriculturist: "Tho sooner such Irons have their llnnl slinpo given to them the better. Tills should have been dono when thoy wero planledi but between tho hurry of spring work and tho timidity of th" Inexperienc ed, who nre afraid to cut, trooaaro quite too often ct out just as thoy eomo from tho nurserv. Such trees must booner or later bo put upon their Until slinpo for hearing, soon nnd tho sooner this is dono thu better. If ono has it young orchard, tho first point to bo considered is the height at which ho will maku thu head of his trees. In localities whero thoBUtn mer is long and hot it is claimed Hint low heads shado tho trunk, and thus nro a benefit. Others wish to havo tho heads high enough to allow the passagoof teams boncath thorn, if need bo. whilo there is no objection to cultivating crops in a young orchard, and, indeed, it is bolter to bo this than to neglect tho soil entirely, tho practico is becoming hiomj general of heeding tho bearing ordinal to clover, and using it as a pasture for swine to tho mutual benefit of pigs nnd trees. Tho height of the heads being decided upon, all branuhos that start be low this should be lomovod. The noxt point should ho to seeuro an open and well-lmlnucod head, with thu main bran ebon evenly disposed. Iteyond this, nil branches that crowd or cross ono another, all "water-shoots," vigorous growths, that sometimes start up in thu growing seasons, should ho cut away. Spirit of the Farm. Merinos, when in marketable condition, for mutton, have always sold readily, and at as good prices in proportion as paid for other kinds of meat. Tho Cotswold, which weighs 200 pounds or mom alive, will, of course dress more pounds of mutton than the Merino wuich only weighs 100 pounds alive. Hut tiro lwth produced at the same cost? TnUing over) thing into consideration, can not an equal given weight of Merinos bo produced tho cluMitcot in thUeountry? KuglUh farmers produce mutton, not for from cro.bred sheep to any largo extent, if tho writer understands- correctly, hut from distinct breeds, by a system peculiarly adapted to natural conditions of soil, climatu and kinds ot sheep handled. Our climtae, at lend, is not favorable to their system of feeding, and so far but little or no at tempt lias been made to follow it. Our system of handling Merinos may bo im proved uikw, and probably will le, but on tho whole it seems ndnpted to our needs, I havo frequently taken from 12 to 11 pounds wool from Merino wethors at three or four years old, and tho btitober stood ready to tako tho bhoru sheep, nh hough seldom welshing over 100 or 1 10 pound! alive. A friend is oio.-t.ing Cotswold ewes .ith a Shrop shire mm, another is crossing grado Merino tnu's in tho samu way, and With are confident of establishing tho ideal mutton breed. 1 am curious to uoto tho result. Taking tho world over, there will bo an over increasing demand for lino and medium clothing wool, just Mich as is produced from Merinos and theirgrades; and such wool is full as likely to meet with a steady demand, at fair prices, as anything that can bo grown. Any general movement in crossing would endanger tho preservation of thorough bred registered tlooka, and crossing such a Hock with another breed is a thing that should nover bo thought of.
