W'm. J. Hen-en, agent for tho Salem

theory is that this occurred previous to
tho Inst rains in July and tho eoiihe

increasing the plague could be no longer
doubted.
Sandusky experienced a fearful
plaguo nnd for weeks tho citizens died
off like sheep with the rot. A trench
was dug nnd forty or more buried cveiy
day. So many left that only one fourth
remained to brave the postilcncc and
finally it too stoppoil. That was a lime
stone legion and history proves that
lime water encourages cholora. Hon.i
K. N. Cooke, deceased, was there at the
time and lost a biotherand other fricmls.
One would meet a friend, both bound on

Thkiu: will bo more leisure after hai-

This number is not badly olt for corres

The OitriiOMVN announces to its
U'.uluis and tho public that they will
oulargo and introduce larger type. This
will bo hailed with delight by the fann
ing populati"ii, who as a rule havo poor

mold and is generally damaged by ac
tion of water. The old White Winter
wheat dioops over whou ripe and does
not open its pod, so can withstand the
elements hotter than many other vaiie
tics can. We hear from Monmouth and
Independence that winter wheat there is
uninjured. Uiit has injured Chili clul
and the California spring wheat that
was so liberally repoited a year or so
ago. That is not due to tho variety of
wheat, however, but to the conditions
that invito nist.
Mr. Hotrcn calls our attention to tho
fact that he has written to us 'and (lis
com aged growing of Kinney wheat for
soioral years back and says he is now
moio dispo-ed against it than ever be
fo'ie. When Mr. Albeit Kinney was ngeut
for tho Salem Mills he imported this
seed and paid n premium of '2 to ." cents
n liiishol to encourage its cultivation,
Inning strong faith in its value. Mr.
Ilerren says he sunt several .-ample
packages of it to Ihig'.ind to have it clas
sified at Mark I.nne and they di-cor.nted
it at the rale of I! to 3 cents per bu-hel
iiL favor of white winter wheat. Mr.
iti'ii en believes that ono-eighth of the
wheat of Marion county is damaged by
tho mold, or discoloration spoken of, nl-mn-t
entirely on Kiunev wheat. Wo
hoar farmers say that tho hills nnd up
lands generally have fust quality of
grain and that 'rust only strikes late
sown spring wheat on the lowe.-t land.
The most sevious complaints of damage

MORAL AND POLITICAL PURITY
Thotwogrc.it political pa i ties have
placed their candidates in nomination
and are waiting tho decision of the impe
rial republicas the final aibitiiment. The
world looks with greater degree of inter
est than common. A strange combina
tion of circumstances weakens and
strengthens each of tho parties. Inde
pendent Itcpublicans, of Xew York
chiefly, assert that Blaine does not come
up to their idea of a political rufonnor,
while Cleveland, they say, does. On the
other hand, a defection occurs among
thoso who have hitheito supported
Democratic nominations, based upon
tho opposition of a ceitain class of work
ingmen to Cleveland, because they asort
his political history does not iiispiiethoni
with confidence that he is the rtliablo
fiiend of the laboring masses.
Another lemaiknblo fcntuio of the
c.uupiigu is the nomination of
Stats Fair Restaurant.
We aio promised a restaurant nt the
State Fair grounds this year that will
bo a credit to tho association and just
the place for visitors to get a tip-top
meal. Mr. Bob Thompson of tho
Thompson House of this city has rented

lt is n gi-o.it bios-Mug to the world that
tho fouiful jiliigtio which was lvcenlly
biought from Asia to Franco, and has
c.uiced hundreds of doaths in Toulon
and Murscillos, on tho southern eoa-t of
that country, hits at lat, yielded toban-
itary ineaaiucs ho that tho contagion do
cro.ies and its .xpread is limited. One
vory iiunorttiut featuro of this time of
plaguo is that science has made a more
rtorfect study of its foaturos than has
over been mado in former times of
plague. It is hoped, by tho highest
medical authority, that a specific will
ho found for it as has been tho case
with small pot. In that easo tho world
will have done away with humanity's
most deadly foe; its most terrible pesti
lenco will bo a terror no longor.
Symptoms of cholora occur overy
year iu various localities and mauy
deaths occur from summer complaints
that aro sometimes fatal, but not neces
sarily so. As science goes on with its
studies nnd experiments life become
moro safe aud onjoyablo. Tho careless
ness of m.i".y persons induces disease
and actually eultivntos it, Tho house
without sullieiont drainage, or where
food is illy prepared, is a post house and
lit my a pest house is far from
being a (uuitariuiti, but is ratfier a nur
sery of disease. Kvery house or room
devoted to bitch uses should bo well lo
cated and kept clean and pure.
Any ono who has had a living and
dying oxperienco with pestilence will
dre.nl it ith the niot intense appre
hension. Tho year before coming to
Oregon IS 10 -we were at Sandusky
City, Ohio, where tho disease suddenly
came upon the sleeping world at mid
night. At that hour wt were taken ill,
and as we followed tho directions of a
friend who was a physician and dread
ing its coining prepared medicines with
full instructions. It was a terrible night,
but when wo recognized tho symptom
wo took tho ntcdidine and towards
looming obtained relief. Wo thought
what would euro Asiatic cholera would
sttWy any kind and it did, but when
morning showed that from 12 midnight
until 0 x. m. 15 death occurred in a
population of 6,000, as many more dy
liutler by tho woiking men, labor le-
fonnors and tho greenbackcrs, who
claim him ns their champion. liutler
will poll a heavy oto in some localities
and his candidacy it is said will hint
Cleveland. Ceitain rumors that involve
tho moral char.ictcrof one of tho leading
candidates alo enter largely into the
canvass and tho foulest at-pei-ions nie
mado against Mr. Blaine, who replies to
their publication by ordering tho In
dianapolis .Sentinel, which published
tho icport, to bo immediately prosecuted
for slander, claiming $:!0,000 damages.
He docs this, ho says, been u so these ni-
niors aperse tlie pimty ami honor cf
his wife. Leading Democratic editois
who havo investigated the Blaine repjrt
piououco it without foundation in fact.
Wo also load in tho po'itical news
that many Iri-li oter intend to support
Blaine, who have hitherto voted other
wise. They assert that his course in
maintaining tho rights of our adopted
citizens is in accordance with their views.
On tho contrary, it is claimed that many
C! rmans ho havo been Bepublicans,
will this year voto for Cleveland.
Blaino's foreign policy is so distinctly
American that Knglish journals and
statesmen opposo his election as hostile
to Kngland, which has, no doubt, some
ell'ect on tho Irish ote, to turn it to
wards lllaino. Tho pro-ent campaign
shows a remarkable weakening of old
party affiliations nnd piomises to be ex

In its attacks on privato character it
