Wo huvo held our own in a romiiikablo maiinur, Cuhfornia and tho Columbia liver tending (o Kuropo enough wheat to lmo divided intlueiice on tho foreign quotations. Wo can ro.ireely complain of u couditiou of things wo huvo done i much to jiro duco, for tho tlfty millions of Imshtls tho l'aeillo States export count heavily in regulating tho market quotations. Tho Pakmkk it. not a prophet and can only bring to bear tho experience of years nnst in coimidorinK tho markets. but with that expeu'enco to guido us wo a mil i xi rca a i opinion. Uiiciuubtan ce? indicate that tho world has a good avcrago supply of. breadstuff with great areas of now land corning into cultiva t on. Wo need not expect at any time during tho year to come nny speculuth t lnovcmeiit or big plices, uii1l-"j tome contingency ari'es entirely unlooki d for now, Hlch as u great European war. Thero has been a panicky feehng in the world's markets for a year back; all op crator, ahnot without an octition, ii'ivo l"-t in the dealings and aic deter mined to go (low und fuithor- to hiivo tho bfst of the business if they venturo in again. Theio is viilually a combina tion among buyers to save themselves and capital as wo pi evented in n lecent ime in California seems inclined lo help the buyer instead of tho wheat grower. All hands are trying lo get even, for thero is a feeling that during tho last haivest year tho producor has had decidedly tho best of tho dealing. It is hardly possible that thero will be no competition and that this do-nothing policy will continue and when a markot is actually established matters must im prove 1 he only thing to do is to wait and sco what vill turn up. "Hold on and growl" is sometimes tho only reas onablc alternation and a little growling is actually a relief to one. As lo tho tonnage supply: that will figure also. California counts on having a million tons of wheat surplus this season and has tonnage in poitamlon tho way to carry ofF two-thirds of that quantity. To tho northward, tho Co lumbia river, it was calculated that we could uc 200,000 tons of shipping, but that will not bo the case under jircsont circumstances. With wheat at CO cents in this valley it will not bring ovor 35 cents cast of tho Cascades. Thero is a diilorcnco in value of that wheat and ours, which, with upper Columbia freights deducted, would leavo the east ern wheat grower littlo for his crops. Ho cannot sell at 35 cents a bushel and can mako moro of it by conveiting it into beef ond pork. All tho wheat that can bo used to advantage "will bo kept there and shipments will bo email un less the business outlook improves. This leaves the quantity to bo shipped from the Columbia river so uncertain that wo need not fear that tho rate of freights will remain high. Fresent asking rato3 are higher than can be sustained. No ships can bo chartered at 47s 6d when tho bottom has droppod out of tho wheat markot, as it has now. Wo bnvo given a plain and careful rosumo of tho situation as to wheat and breadstuff, and tho roader can judge for himself whothor our advico is healthy, to make tho best of circum stances und wait for something to turn up. Tho Wntervillo Times of Aug. 12th has littlo to say of tho hop market. Tho crop is being picked ami taved in good shape. Everywhere is thero a dearth of business, and 35 cents is tho highest offered in that section ond Unit for voiy choice Thero is a deficiency iu yields comp.uod with last year, in tho Wntervillo districts. Tho lh owers' Guardian of July 20th contains the following which looks like a fair repoit of tho condition of tho crop on the Continent : Looking nt all tho circumstances and conditions of tho vaiious ditrict-, wo consider that if the rain docs tho amount of good that is ox peeled, and if wnim, suitable weather prevail dining August the English crop m ly amount to 280,000 cvvts., or ulk ut t cvvts. per acre round; mould may spread and icduco the crop; lico may get into tho cones; cold weather may ii'ri't tho development of the cones; many things may happen in shoit to re duce this, but if till things go well this avcrago will it is thought bo obtained. Quito an avcrago crop will bo grown thioughoiit Germany und Austtia. Ac counts tuo good fiom all quarters, with tho exemption of the Steiermark in Aus tria, a district of about 2.G00 acres, where lico have done injury. As stocks aio low in Germany it is not likely that many hops will lie bent ftoin thence to Knglaud, unless prices rule very high. Tho Uelgian and Holland plantations havo been sorely iifliicted with aphides, but not so much so iu the roporinghe country ns in other pans. Prospects havo, however, lately improved, and it is thought that n crop of about 4 cvvts. per aero will be grown. Taking tho world round tho crop of 18S4 will not bo equal to an average return. Stocks are excessively low everywhere, so it is expected that prices will be high. Itcgurding the California market, we take pleasure in referring to tho circu lar ol J. T. Cochmu A Co., 302 Califor nia street, San Francisco, Cul., which is us follows . Since our hi-a repoit 50 bales of tho remaining 100 bales S3's have been sold at 27 J cvnt ; also a con tract nia.lo for CO bale new Sacramen to'-, reporto 1 piicc 21 conts. This morn j mg thero is some inquiry from abroad for now Top but as yet we hear of no offi'rs being made, lo bales new crop arrived this week from Sacinmento und went into Btoio. There is no material chaugc. to ieprit in the condition of the growing crop iu New York and England Hinco our last; the markets at thfiio points aio identical with our own : vi ry quiet, unduly owing to tho absence of stock", and n disposition to await development'3. bo far as wo can learn time is no rp prehension felt by our local hop grow cis. The vinos look well and tho burr is Tilling out rapidly and plump. An avcrago crop is looked for and prospects aio that it will be of excellent quality. ine local markotsaro vniiout change. Thero is a noticeable la King of dairy products and eggs, which at this season of the year is not unexpected as our farmers are all busyharvcstingand don't hate tiino to attend to such produce. Mark Lane Wheat slow, maize steady English und French country markets Quiet. Mark Lana Review. -The Mark Lane London, Aug., 15, Express, in its review of the grain trade for the past week, says: Tho weather was unaltered. A large proportion of the grain has been harvested, with tho best results. Wheat returns show that 5i por cent, is over average, 30 por cent is average, and Llporcent is under average, Other crops are slightly under average. The wheat trade is nominal. New English wheat declined 2 shillings during tho week. Tho price of wheat langes 10 shillings, and Hour 5 shillings lower than in 1883. Tho new gia!n is flinty, owing to excessive bent. Sales of English wheat tho past week were 27,52S quarters, nt 30s 2d, ngainst 41,790 quarters, at 40s lOd tho corresponding period last year. Foreign w heat at London is demoralized, for both the picont und prosro:tivc trades. Arrivals of caigoes off coast numbered sixteen. Four cargoes were sold, four were withdrawn, and eight re mained; twonty aio due. Flour is neglected, and Od anil is cheaper. Barley is ncglocted, but few samples being offered. Oats aro dull. Mabo is nuiot Theie aro largo airivals, but prices aio unchanged.
