dom. Riches bring troubles and they
eivo no adequate eoiniiensntion ; they
multiply wantn without adequate in
reao of pleasures. It i- truo that pov
erty, on the other hand, U unhappiueM,
for it does not permit gratification of
of simple- wants. The truo mean is that
asy, competence which enabled its pea
itteor to satisfy tlio ordinary require
ments, with perhaps something more,
for this does not multiply the desires
that e'io unhappinoM if they are not
jTxtified. The chief r-ourco of troubles
that nfllict tho human family may be
found in unreasonable dt-n'ro to acquire
Toalth. Men sacrifice their Uve,a.il all
the that is worth liring for, to this un
reasonable desire. How much better to
proservo easy contentment with moderate
possessions and simple tastes.
A suitable division of time to provide
for all proper enjoyments, for work and
for rest, is always easy if one has inclina
tion to establish methodical habits. A
great deal of harm is done by devoting
too much time to work. Among people
who are classed as industrious this is a
very common fault They see the ne
cessity of accomplishing certain objects,
for getting work dono in its season, and
unmindful pf natural laws, which direct
that needed rest bo h.id, they trench
upon the hours of sleep in their eager
desire to get work done. This course
cannot bo pursued through any great
length of time without impairing re
sources. The inevitable penalty is weak
ened powers. Tho monition comes in a
sense of fatigue that denotes tho time
when for rest is essential. If the forces
aro still employed a piutost comes in
severe pains, then if violation of nature's
behests still continues, tho breakage 'hat
is irreparable. Farmers, more than men
in other vocations, aic inclined to tax re
sources too hc.ivily. Let them bear in
mind that excesses of labor, particularly
in the hours devoted to heavy tusks, will
surely bo punished, even moro surely
than violation of statutory enactments.
We often hear persons talking about
"brotherhood in tho Grango" when the
words uttered are idle wind, when the
heart has no appreciative sense of the
sentiment the words should convey.
What kind of brotherhood is it when
members try to pull down others? This
talk of brothcihooil is oftentimes a mere
cloak to conceal sinister purposes. Find a
member of tho order who Bpoaks slight
ingly of his follow m, who evincos unmis
tnkablo signs of pleasure when he sees
them embarrassed, their interest harmed,
their characters assailed, is this broth
erhood? No; it is not in aceoxl with
Grange teachings nor with the wieer
teachings thatcomo withdivino authori
ty. But if the world could have more of
real brotherhood, more of sympathetic
regard by man for his fellows, how much
better it would be. The Grange exerts
wholesome influence in this direction,
but this influence is many times neutral
ized by evil-mined persons who, under
the guise of friendly regard, thrust the
cruel shafts of calumny for the moro
gratification of evil passions. It is said
that slander flourishes most luxuriantly
in the couiUry, that peoplo in cities have
eneongh of their own affairs to claim
attention without devoting timo and
thought to others. It is true, doubtless,
that country communities have more de
light in tho tattle that has for its chief
object disparagement of neighbors and
aoquantunccs. Hut the statement does
not hold good in cultivated communi
ties where thought is broadened, mind
expanded and manhood enlarged. It is a
serious fault of a neighborhood when it
is known to bo censorious. A farm stir
rounded by neighbors who find delight
in small mischief-making loses a consid
erable part of its value becauso it is im
possible to establish there so pleasant a
home as might be found if the neighbors
wore whole-souled, true and generous in
character. Tho Grange cannot possibly
do a better service to mankind than to
crush out utterly among its members the
disposition to ivwail by petty annoyances
or slanderous tongues men andjwomen
who, if originally bad, are made worso
by such treatment.
Tho meanest part of partisan politics
is the tendency to animadvert upon
character or to seize upon incidents and
pervert them in tho showing ; slanders
that fly in a. political campaign until the
very air is darkened. Thore is an in
junction upon Granges to keep out of
politics, that is to say, partisan politic.
Of course nobody will contend that a
person who becomes a member of the
Grange relinquishes any privilege of cit
izenship. Men with decent regard for
propriety have no ploasure in tlu per
sonal slanders that characterize political
campaign". It is the banc of j ourjpoli
tics partisan politics be it understood
that the pergonal character of a can
didate becoiaos, immediately upon his
nomination, an object of assault. How
ever pure a man may be in his life some
body will originate an offensive story that
will attach to him. Orators on tho op
posite fide will repeat it with etuboliih
menu until the candidate seem? as black
as Satan. Uy all means tho Granges
should keep clear of this miserable work
and they 'should also discountenance it
by every possible moaas.
In every mibborhood where tln'ie is
an active Grange, thrro can bo n good
Khool, well maintained and with much
greater ufaln.j-i tlnn ordinary district
school. Tho advantage in euch cases
is in concerted action on tho part of pa
trons to impriivu nnd increase facilities
for educating their children. There is
no interest pt greater moment, nono
which should receivo more ready atten
tion from Granges. The ordor in it
self is educational, but its advantages
are never fully realized when confined
exclusively to members. From tho
Grange there should radiate beneficial
influence extending throughout the
neighborhood, particularly in this mut
ter of schools. This subject should be
taken into thoughtful consideration now
before autumn schools are organized.
Lot progress bo made. It there be gen-e.-al
desire to make tho school better
than it was last year, to employ more
efficient teachers, and in eery reasona
ble way to improve its general character.
Tho result will compensate nil effort
expended in this direction, and if there
bo continued desire to make improve
ment by nnd by each Grange neighbor
hood may bo distinguished from othors
by the general oxcellenco of its schools.
