Tin rsday, Aug 7, 1SS-1.
The wneat market is without form.
Mr. Horren, of the .Salem Mills, informs
us that the quality is of an excellent or
der. The berry is plump and good color.
lie tells us of a lot which came in Wed
nesday the kernel was affected by some
nature to that the bran is of an off color
slightly redish caste. He will run it
through the smutter and test it to see if
i is all right before sending it to tho bin.
There is leports of slight rust in the very
late spring grain but it is not general.
The price of wheat cannot be correctly
formed as yet. It will all be held in
abeyance by the condition if the freight
ruling- At pre-ent freights are stiffening
conridi nbly and apprehensions are felt
that tli' v will rule high. There ii an
abund.'i e of wheat arriving at the mills
in Salem, and we hear of only one sale
and that was at CO cents ier bu-hel and
the mills did not wish to buy that as
there was no basis for prices. All other
produces are unchanged and arrivals are
not t-o free for hay.
The farmers are entering harvet with
:-pirit and many machines are busy, and
the fact is noticeable of an increased yield
everywhere.
There is no use denying that although
"wheat is king" yet, "freight is the power
behind tho throne" that rules tho farm
ers of tho Pacific Northwest with an iron
grap.
The weather continues very favorable
for the growing crop anil harvesting.
The hop market is bare of any quo
tatione, all wo can find of intere-.t is the
prospects. From all directions wc hear
of full crops and splendid prospects for
quality. From Kngland come the re
port that the best cultivated plantations
are piomising well for a very fair crop;
tho lateral branches aro reaching acrv-s
tho alloys, and buir in tho early i-orts
hangs in groat profuhion. In .several
plces young hops the t-'un of small
cherries may already bo f-een. Tho fields
attacked by lico aro entirely freed.
