California's Grain and Toncnze. San Fkam'Isco, Juno 30. Discussing tho grain and tonnago situation this morning, tho Chronicle frays "Whatever may bu tho final outcome of tho Cali fornia wheat crop of 1SS4, it is very cer tain to bo far greater than with hor prospective tonn.igo facilities and im mediate prospects of an opening in Europe, slio can easily handle. It is true that wo shall begin our now cereal year with an unusually largo supply of shipping, Bay 150,000 tons register, but thot, together with shipping on tho way, and a. similar amount expected to follow, say 200,000 tons legistor, must btill prove very inadequato. tinder tho moat favor able circumstances our wheat surplus cannot bo shipped within tho season, anil in all probability tho lust of it will not get away leforo tho end of 1S83, and will not be finally marketed in Enjrland and tho continent before tho middle of 18SG. Oregon Fruit Drier. Mr. II. S. Jory, of South Salem, in forms us that ho received this wook an order for a medium size drier of his patent from Dr. Iteynolds who has a fine orchard north of Snlem n few miles. Mr. Jory is now making or has mado three sizes of driers. Those who are in- tercted should call and see him soon as ho intends going to California early in the fall to work up buinei-s there. A Novel Hen. A Cape Vincent man has constructed a sheet-iron hen that pronn'sos to lay him a golden egg. It is finished up to life, size, cackles, chicks and looks with one eye at a time so naturally that it deceives the oldest hen-hawk in the country. It is so fixed that when a hawk, mink or polecat pounces on to it tho back springs open and tho wings lly up and force the assailant on to a ravenous buzz-saw that makes 1700 revolutions a minute. After moving half a minulo tho saw stops, the hen clo"CS up, folds its wings and begins to cucklo as though it had just Jam an egg. One winding up will answer for tin co massacres, provided tho rather dolicate machinery docs not got clogged up with too much blood, bones and feathers. Ho set a freshly painted one out in the sun to dry last Wednesday, which attracted the nttention of a fino old cat belonging to Dr. Wood, who had beon poaking a great deal of fun at tho fool thing. The lieu is there but tho cat is hence. Ex. CHA. H. BB A CO. Front, First and Vino Sts., PORTLAND, ORECON, IMTORTERS OT HARDWARE, mOIT AND STEEL FARM MACHINERY. Zimmormanu are building sections of this excellent drier and preparing to fill orders on shoit no tice. As wo lmvo explained heretofore this tliier is so constructed as to bo able to throw off or on heat as re quired and dill'erent sections can be roj mated differently. Tho operation of their driers can bo seen at the stove store of Hen Strang, Commercial street, Sa lem, wuero n section is ou display. o ait) haying a large size drier built by them, in six sections, each containing ten trays a square yard in size. These will hold half a bushel of medium siotl prunes or plums, whole, or one-third of it bushel of pitted plums. Each i-ection will dry a charge of sliced apples easily in two hours, or fio chiirgcs'iu ten hours, estimated at forty bushels a day of ten hours work. Our drier would eiuro 210 bushels in ten hours. What wo appreciate in tho Acmo drier is tho ability to keep each of those six Mictions at different heat, as desired, green fruit will tako a boat that will bum up fruit nearly dried. Wo can lie continually changing a fresh section nnd tempering heat to suit. All things considered the Acme tliier has no 8ujc rior and is considered the U'st eer used there. Two years ago the discussion of the California State Articultund Societv elicitetl tho ttateiueut from several pronunct fruit men that the Acme was ahead of till then in use. Wo have used the Acmo principle for two years nnd are Mtisfied that it will do our work well, ho arc preparing to build mora extensivolv and two what wo already have.
