A Grange cannot prosper when there are dissensions within its ranks, mid yet there are too many cases where trilling causes lead to differences of opinion that terminato in hurtful disagreements and lasting ill-will. From whatever causes disagreements of an unplcasint charac ter may appear, they should be adjusted speedily, or if that course be not possi ble, the persons immediately concerned should agree to disagree. A pitiful thing in many of the disHensions that disturb prosperity of Granges is in the triviality of oxciting causes and of the disagreements themselves. It may bo that ruffled temper is tho immediate cause; in any cae, tbe origin of such difficulties may bo found in tho imper fection of human nature. Wo are not yet completely and wholly civilized; there is in our natures too much asser tion of animal propensity, or Bavsge de era TLe inuwion of the Grange i to subdue wht Is savage in human-char- acter, but its progress must necessarily bo slow when members yield to impulse rfnd go astray while judgment dictates plainly a wiser course. Practical Science An instance of the practical applica tion of science to every-day lifo is well shown in tho building of tho capitol building of Dakota, at Bismarck, by tho aid of electric light. This building, costing a quarter of a million of dollars, consists of three stories, basement and sub-basement, measuring a hundred and fifty-fivo feet by ninety-two feet, and con tains over four million bricks, with trim mings of Joliet stone, and has been erected in tho midst of winter. Tho cor ner-stone was laid September 5, 1883, and on tho 10th of January, 1884, a fow clays more than four months later, a photograph shows tho building to lack only the projection of one side nnd tho upper part of tho tower. This result was accomplished by the employment of electric light, which half the time re placed the sun, enabling doublo gangs of men to work day and night. Tho frozen sand was thawed by a red-hot cylinder, and the mortar, made with boiling water and hot lime, had its moisture absorbed by tho dry bricks be fore it had time to freeze. Although taller, the building is an almost exact duplicate of the new capital of Minne eota. A CRUSH AT A CIRCUS. An Anxious Crowd Throngs Cole's Enormous Exhibition. The St. Lonis Globe-Democrat of Vrl day morning, April 25th, gives a graphic description of Cole's great shows, and in paying tho performance the highest tribute of praise it makes spocial men tioa of tho wonderful crowds in daily at tendance upon this truly marvelous on- tertainment, which is to exhibit in Salem on Wednesday, July 2d. "It verily seemed that everybody in St. Louis at tended the two performances of Coles creat shows at Nineteenth and Pine yes terday. At the afternoon entertainment the tents were full, whilo at tho night performance the throng of eager appli cants for admission was so donso that tho ticket wagon had to bo closed, as every available inch of space was occu pied. Tho splendid circus programme which Mr. Cole had arranged was carried out entire, with a skill and excellence which won the enthusiastic applanso of the multitude The many novelties which distinguish the Cole shows from others of tho same class were a revela tion, and while some of thrilling acts wcru in progress iuu fjiuui uuuir-nuva almost held their .breath at the unheard of daring of the performers. Tho various artists had recovered from the nervous ness of the first day, and did their parts cleverly and without any failures or accidents." urn fi Logs of Appt'tltr. llpmlndip, Dr-pro slon, Imllct'Mlim mill t'mifctlpiitloii, IS!!. imiRiietig, ll hnlln-v l'nrc, Dull l.ljrf i ..I n lilotchetl.bklii.nro nincrg tlu' i-yii pint-. which Indlc.ito that the l.ier U &;!, for aid.
