Tho American Oxfordshire Down Sheep Afiocintion in its liistoiy of tlio origin of this breed says : It is now pomowhero ouu- fifty yea r.- flinco Mossrs. Drucc of Uynsham, Gillott of Soutldoigb,lJlakeof Stanton Harcourt, and Twynliam of Hampshire, unilcrtook t'nd construction of a new brred of slacp, tbat should in great mon'mie posses the weight of tho Jx)ngnool with tho quality of tho Down. Trobably tho advantiigo of such n breed was first apparent in tho offspring of n cross occasionally resorted to in tho case of draft cwci, but from pursuing which farmers had hithorto been deterred by tho tendoncy of the offspring to breed back to cither ide ; and for many years after the breed had be come recognized us distinct, tho want of uniform character was n source of criti cism. Some slight admixture of Sussex Down may havo been introduced by those early breeders; but no aro of opinion that tho Cotswold gicy-fact'd ram anu mo Jiiunpiiiro uown ewe were tho chief, if not tho only, material which, by judicious breeding and careful Hclcctiou havo resulted innclusiof eheep winch, under suitablo conditions, ine probably as iirolitablo as any that can bo mentioned, both on account of bie, weight of wool, aptitudo to fatten, hardy character, and wilunblo meat. 'The hicccsh of tho early piomoters of the pro ject led many others into the field. It was not until 1850 that they weio styled tho O.xfordshiio Down, the county of Oxford being their strongho'd ; previous to this date they oio piopcily lcgauled as cross-breeds, and known its Down Cotfitt olds, under which designation thoy nfriichioved successes at tho Bmithficld "" shows. At tho loyal meeting at War wic in 1857, thoio weio thiitj-hcnen entries ; tho fust priVo in tho old class (comprising Downs) was taken by the Into Mr, Siiiuuol Diucofoi ashcopofthis breod. Mr. Philip l'ut-cy, seeing the advantage ihwo sheoji weio likely to confer on tho public generally, as also on tho flock niastcr, became himself a warm supportor of tho brocd. At ins ilcuth tliey lost a givat patron, who, had ho boon spared, would havo materially aided their iapid spread aud improvement. Tho distribution of these flocks laid a good foundation for many othors; not only did many tenant funnora givo up tho old breeds to inako loom for tho im proved sort, but tho O.xfoidshiro sheep found favor with landed propiietors, and amongst othei s his Graco tho Duko of Mnrlhoroiigh nail a JlocK on a 'arm in ins own occunntioii at Ulenheim. As fcoon as tho bieed becamo established somo of tho most bucco-wful breeders began lo exhibit their sheep at tho Hoynl Agticultutal Society's Show, nudtib thoy had no special v.s, weio shown with short-woolod clirop and cio-h broods. '1 his unsatisfactory state of things con tinued until 18(11, when tho btowsmls in (heir ropoit btated "That tho judges aro ot opinion unit uuowsiiuo uowns should not bo excluded fiom rompotition at those annual shows, ns thoy lelioo IIimiii to bo animuls possesting great merit, and worthy of haing a class to tbonisolxes." Tho It. A. S divided on a scp.uato hits, and tho (Kfmdsliiro Downs made their .irt appeai.inco as a lecoguized bleed bj tho jjio.it Micinty in tho Inhibi tion j ear of IS(i2, at llnttciM'H, xvhero theynumbeied Iti entries, and wore highly spoken of by the judges, who, how ouu, objected to tip it waul of unifor mity. It w.tsa pi mid dav foi tliistlmmsliing bueil of Diicop, whin it t tno ni.iiimii'Ui Club show in IS"'.', his tiiiteo tho Duko of MurllKirotigh took tluuhinipion prize with ltis splendid hi Hums .is the best pen of cheep in any of the rlii-im; Mr. John Tje.id well's ew e bemjj amongst tho tltreo list pens left by the judge for holection. Wo now shoitly di'hcnbo tho char iicleictic.s of u good tj hj of Oxfoixlslmo. 'A real Oxford Down should h.iu a nice, dark-brown face (not black), tho poll well iworcd with xmhjI, adorned with a top-knot on the forehead) a good lUwo of wool Ih'ek on tho skin, not too tiuly ill well-formed bauvl on short, dark biown legs (not grey or Kitted); with goml lit m mutton." The introduction of Oxfords into tho States by Mr. T. S. Cooper in 1870, murks mi important era in thu sheep husbandry of this country Mr. Coo.xir. knowing a good animal, and revoguixmg in tho Oxford a Mieep peculiarly uduptod to tlio wants of Aunirioiiu bu-luuuliiicn, made u largo iniitotnitioii in the Miiiunor of tbat jwir (I8?(i), from the most noted docks of Knglnnd. The tdxvp arrived in most excellent eoudttiou, and after a ciy hort ivM, they were exliibitod at many of tin leading fairs, and also shown at the Ceiiteniiin. l.xjHwHioii at l'liiludel phia, where lhe itttr.tclul much well deserved attention. When we say that tho Oxfords at this particular show at traded mom attention than all the other broods of shoop shown there, wo ant not oxaggoratiiig intholc.ist. TboAmeiiean shejihard nvognized in tho Oxford u siicep that was destined to ruoliitiouiri .JuH-p linsKutdry, from tho fact that thoy wore Imnly to a surprising degrvo, rs a wool bearer second to noi.p. ns a uutttou hivi tho jhht of any breed, not oven ex cepting the long nvognie! champion, tho .Southdown. Tho eales of Sir. OooHr in 1870-77, woro ory largo, and wo ItcHeio gave, gixnl MititstaotUm, as not line wont or complaint was utter ml nginct them, and all purchaser of 1870 or '77 ha c len and still am breeders of this sheep.' And wo might say further that, as a fact (and we sjieakfrom knowl edge), not one person who ever estab lished a ilock of Oxfords has dis continued to breed them. Thero mo casos where parties who were brooding uaiuius ijuib junuiiig, uuu so ui necessity ceased breeding ehtep ; butwchao to hear yet of tho iii-t ptii-on who became uispatisliecl with tlio Oxford and ceased breeding them. There arc now in the United States End Canad.is a numbor of choice Hocks of Oxfords that are in tho hands of most careful breeders, who, in stcadof resting upon laurels won by their favorites in England, are laboring to im prove their sheep by increasing their fleeces, xvcight of caicass, nnd if it were possible to make them more adapted to tho wants of American farmers. T. W. W. S. in Sheep-Dreedernnd Wool-Grower. Feeding Figs the First 150 Days As wc uavo olten said, pig raisers should uoid gixing young pigs a spe cialty fattening food. In the dairy there is plenty of skim-milk, which is well adapted to grow tho young pig, as it is rich in phospbato of lime to grow the bones, and of cheesy, albuminoid matter to grow tho muscles. A little corn may bo given with the milk. Such pigs nc or grow into littlo round dumps of of fat, but grow into rangy choats. Yet, piobably,a majority of our readers havo the pigs without the skim-milk, and wo must name tho food for pigs undersuch ciicumstanccs. One of the best foods for tho pig is a small quantity of linstod oil meal; a tablespoonful to tho fifteen pound pig, incroased as tho pig grows; this, foil with oats and corn ground to gether, made into a slop, will causo rapid growth, but not prematura fattening. Cotton-seed menl is sometimes used, but v,o cannot lccomnicnd it for young pigs. Jt is not to oasily digested, and it has not tho samo beneficial laatixo ef fect as liiiseedme.il, which is found to bo a promoter of health in tho pig. This can bo procured at any considerable tow n all over the countiy, and thoso who rniso anil feed large numbors of hogs can afford to send to tho oil mills for it, and get it at wholesale lates. It can be bought at tho mills at $20 to $25 per ton, anil it is always woith theso prices as a food. It is so rich in muscle-forming matter a4o bo of great valuo to food with corn, which is so deficient in this quality. I.ive-Stock-Journal. A Remedy for drubs in Sheep. I notlco in fovernl papers statements to tlio effect that many shcop are dying tliis spring from a disoase known as grub in tho head. Tho cause, symp toms, anil result of this malntly aro cor rectly desciibod in tho articles I havo seen, it tulcon in time tlio uihupo is easily cured, but if not thero is no loin edy. It is caused by a peculiar Kind of ily, v hich depo-its its" eggs in tho nos tuls of tho hheep in hot weather. Theo eggs doiop tonnrds spring into grubs, which cat into tho brain nnd imaiiitbly pioduco death. A suro lemcdy is this: After the hot woathcr is ocr and the eggs deposited, niaVo a strong dccoition of Scotch snulVand iihsofiedita and then inject with a syringoabouta tablespoon ful into each nostril. Tlio sheep will reel and stagger liko a drunken man after tho operation, hut thero ifc no dan tier I wad brought up on a farm in XowYoik, and have seen this rem edy applied on thousands of sheep, and al ways with sutccs. Tho induces the most iolont sneezing, which dblodgos and ejects tho eggs No sheep properly treated in tho manner docciibed will ctor die of tlii-s disease. Hut when tho grub is onco hatched and developed theio is no remedy. It. II. MeClcllau in Sheep llievder and "WooMhower. A timely lvport on the swino imhistry of tho 1'iiitiHl States has just appoaiod from tho commission appointed some time ago to examine tlio allegation con cerning the uiilieiilthfulno& of Ameri can pioilucU.
