Klickitat crops are not quite up to n good average. Some one lias threatened to blow the Pope up with dynamite. Crops in Eastern Washington arc vory promising everywhere. Lightning struck the barn of Henry Reese, near Lewiston, I. T. Eastern excursionists are arriving at Portland in large numbers. Itcports from crops nil through the Eastern country are decidedly good. On Engle Creek, Clackamas county, four black bear wore killed last week. Cut worms do not molest Benton county farmers or make them afraid. Arrangements have been made to have John B. Gough lecture in. Portland. Wardle, who was shot by Farris, in Yamhill county, will probably recover. Indian Dick of Assotin, W. T., died from injuries had in a fight with a griz zly bear. California fruits sell for a big price in California, cherries are 15 to 20 cents per pound. Charles A. Dana, of the X. Y. Sun, is a candidate jor tho presidoncy,, by the democratic party. A son of Mr. Alexander, near Beuna Vista, was thrown from a horse and his skull fractured. A steel steamer is to bo built for the Coos bay trade by Union Iron Works, of San Francisco. Tho next Legislature will stand : Re publicans, 51; Democrats, 39. Republi can majority on joint ballot, 12. Mrs. Swart was acquitted by the jury of Marion County Circuit Court, on trial for tho murder of her husband. P. B. Sinnot has again been appointed and confirmed agent at tho Grand Rondo reservation, Polk county, Oregon. Logan has visited Blaine' at Augusta Maine and the occasion was made much of by his old soldiers in that vicinity. The O. R. & N. Co. now receives freight for LTa Grande and will have their road into Union by tho Fourth of July. John Newlad, a sheep herder, near Meacham, is supposed to have taken his own life in a moment of mental adora tion. Hon. A. Van Dnsen, a prominent citi S zen of Astoria, died last Tues lay. He was extensively known throughout all ' Oregon. The State Teadicr's Association'will convene in Salem June 30, and continue until July 3. An interesting programme is announced. The Prince of Orange, heir to the throne of Holland is dead. He kept sixty parrots in his bed room and they probably talked him to death. Dr. Blalock has over 1000 acres of fine looking corn at the mouth of tho John Day river, near Blalock station on the Columbia. A committee of tho National Conven tion has formally notified Blaine of his nomination. One from each State wait ed upon him at Augusta, Maine. The weather continues to bo showery over the whole coast, in California and East of the Cascades, in Oregon and Washington Territory. Hendricks will accept tho nomination for governor of Indiana in hopes to carry the State in tho fall and so help the presidential outlook. Sidney Dillon has resigned and Chas. Francis Adams, Jr., is elected as his suc cessor to the presidency of the Union Pacific Railioait Company. The Mormons consider tho new bill passed for their benefit, binding on them, very unjust, and tyranical, and are pre paring to evade it so far as possible. Independent Republicans are making something of a show in New York and Massachusetts and say they will join the Democracy if Cleveland is the nominee. Patrick Joyce was arrested on a steam er at Queenstown, suspected of being a dynamiter; an infernal machine was found in his baggage. Ho is fiom Uel laire, Ohio. Three-fourths of the democrats of Missouri favor Gov. Cloavland, of Xew York, as tho nominee for President. Since Tilden has absolutely declined leads as a democratic favorite. On the farm of Mr. Barnes, near Ta coma, a burning tree fell across the house and crushed it. No harm was done to persons except that a babo was caught in the ruins but extricated. C. K. Garrison, known as Commodore Garrison, supposed to be worth twenty millions, has failed, but will probably pay all and have a million loft. The same is true of James Keono ; feeveral very rich men have had to suspend to gave themsehes. Tho annual election of the K-called Villard companies was held in Portland on Mouday of last week and resulted in electing the same boards of directors with few change, which signifies that no material change has taken place in ownership. The interest of the Northern Pacific company no doubt controls the O.K. &N.Co. The wagon road from Yakima to Puget Sound by tho Snoqualmie Pass is nearly nnisned. Ben Butler is in Washington working up ins cnances for the Democratic nouv ination at Chicago. J. F. Burns, of Clarke county, W. T., has a cherry tree 22 inches at the base that this year produced 1700 pounds of Iruit wmen h Black Tartarian. The steamer Gipsy, belonging to the O. It. it N. Co., entered Yaquina bay at low tide. A steamer has left Coos bay tor ban a rancisco with live rafts ol logs. Five horses were killed by lightning on (Jrab creek, Palouse country, belong ing to Wm. Basey. They lay in a heap with no mark of injury showing on them. John Parsons, who was attending the unuersity at alcm, was drowned wlien fishing at the mouth of the Columbia. He was earning money to continue his education. Independent Republicans in New York, with Carl Schurz at their head, are preparing to issue a circular stating reasous why they cannot vote for Blaino ana lxgan. Since the railroad was finished to Ash- 1 ind the trade of Yreka and that region is turning to Poitland and their wool is shipped there. Tho wool of that sec tion is cxtr i quality. A. Van Dus-en, of Astoria, another pioneer and well known citizen, died a few days ago. He has been in trado there for many years, and has a large rircle of friends through this State and Washington Territory. On tho Molalla, near Ramsby's bridec, was found the lcmains of Chas. Stefiin, aged 40, who has been missing some time and who is thought to have died from natural causes. Ho had $35 in his pocket book and blankets and clothing wore near Dy. Morgan it Sons, an old banking house, failed in Now York, owing to losses in stocks that swallowed their capital. A merchant who had lost heavily commit ted suicide. Gould savs his stocks may be lower on the Stock Exchange but as they earn their usual dividends he doesn't care what they rato at. A few days ago Gaines Fisher, the b.ucm livorv stable keeper, went to feed his horses and hearing more rattle in the meal than seemed necessary, found several quarts of ground glass had been mixed with the shorts he feeds once a day to his stock. The miscreant who tried to kill Jnshers horses overdid it. He did not grind all his glass fine and his deed was fortunately discovered in time. It requires that a man should be very depraved to bo willing to put horses to such torture. It is a pity that the act cannot be traced to its author. "CERTAINLY A GEEAT SHOW." Another Graceful Tribute Paid to W.W. Cols.s Huge Clrcui. The highest tribute that can bo paid to any public enterprise is to say that it deserves public patronage and is fiee from all unsavory surroundings and W, W. Cole's Great Shows hae the reputa tion of being clean, puro and well con ducted, as attests the following extract from the Lawrence Journal of May 4th. It says: "Yesterday Coles mammoth show exhibited in our city as previously announced. The street procession was all that could be asked, and fully up in every particular to what had been prom ised. On entering the show tent one was struck with the bright and now aspect of everything. Mr. Cole's attendants were gentlemanly and extended every courtesy possible, a most acceptable change from the surly, crossgrained peo ple so often met at similar places. The menagerio contained many lare animals, some never before seen in this city. An hour was given before and after tho entertainment for inspecting them. The The circus proper presented many very entertaining featurcp. The trapezo pei formanco especially was vociferously applauded several times, and the many other attractions were greatly enjoyed. Mr. Colo certainly has a great show, and he has the good fortuno to hae a first class management in all respects. He will be welcomed back should ho return again.
