WOOD SORREL.
My clearest love, thy flower's a-Mnom
Once morn I'vo gathered it to-Jay
Aa through the tci ler forest gloom
I tonk my lonely way.
Half hid 'neath sprays of bramble vine,
The fragile blossoms light the place.
As onco thoso sad, sweet eyes of thine
Lit up a Mower- like face.
The sclf-snme charm to thee to them,
Hath by a uonl of God been given,
Tho opal shiinmeriii2 diadem
Thou nearest now in heaven.
. Ah, loved and lot' iincqualed maid!
Green aro the leaves of fond regret,
Ay thy Inno 1 vcr nadly laid
In SpritiB'. g y circinct.
Thy spirit mirelv li nnt tho path
Where I in retPii pe '-e mood
Seek the solo solace nn'inory hath,
Tho bliss of qii tude.
Thy footfall liuht preecdoj me still.
As sun or tliadow falls on grass,
fjome po'ont grace intangible,
O'er me, from thsc, doth piss.
And, b.U'lin o'er the faint veined flower
Thino eiddun on slender stalk,
Ag.iici I kiep l.)ve's trj sting hour,
And citch tl'y Iow-toticd talk.
Mino yet, in some sweet, subtle scnir,
In stillness where no rudo note jars,
Where Amaranth b'ooms, and Innocence,
And Sorr-I's silver star.
Love in Ashes.
"Scant of nine, and the w.teliiug all
out," mused tin if ty Mrs. Chultor ;m slir-
vcrulihcd tlic poicli. "Do.icon, I'll f;et
you lo nl the biy ttilxloun rollar, if von
will."
'Coilain, wife," responded tho deacon
from his cm I in tho door-ynul.
'Thero comes ru'iulnllV, new bukct
wagon, wild two women in il," ptiisucd
Iho lady, wringing her mop. 'Jmi'I that
the lioiv-e that hulks?"
Being in tho critical act of emptying
a four-gallon bucket of soap, the good
man vouchsafed no tcply. When tho
jollied mass bad quivered and Hplashed
into tho barrel in waiting ho looked up
in huason to fpo tho gay little pony shy
at tho cart and go touring down the
road.
"They'll bo upset! they'll Iw killed!
ItunnuVr'cml Do something'" shrieked
Mrs. Chutter.
''Don't get excited, wifoj they're all
right now. That girl diivos like a man."
And picking up bis bucket, tho mod
erate, deacon muiehod olT for il second
supply of soap, lint though the littlo
incident bad failed to shako bin nerves,
it did mako him oblivious to his wifo'8
wash-tub poiM'il on tho landing of tho
dim stair-way, and as a natural conse
qnonco iio put his foot in it. Tho tub
rolled ; tho deacon swayed liko a peatlo
inamoitnr; tboro was n lively .siktcs
Hion of bunilis followed by a clatter and
a thud, and deacon, tub and bucket
Htrowed tho cellar floor.
"Adah and Abihu! ejaculated the fallen
saint, with energy.
"What's up, uncle" cried an anxious
voice o 01 bead.
"I can toll you what's down," was tho
grim icspoiifo. "Como and brace mo
while I try to step."
Thu owner of tho voice, a line-looking
youth of ono-and-twenly, wtf ulroadv
groping his way among the debris-, bis
aunt in the rear with tho camphor.
The (li'iK'on'H attempted locomotion
resulted in a groan.
I nniht have sprained my ankle, Har
vey. If I bad ootoned this tub uicc
till after I'd been my rounds, 'twould
have been better calculation."
Oh, I wouldii'tworiynbout my rounds,
uncle. What's tho hurry?''
".My customers expect mo to day, that's
tho point. I hate masteily to lnt.ik my
woid. Now there's tho widow Cleaves
wailing for mo to tako her ashes, so she
eau scrub after mo with boiling suds,
and up at Kendall's they'io clear out of
sonp."
"And not clean without, eh?" laughed
tho young man. "Fro lum, uncle: since
you aro going to fool so uneasy alKiut
disapioiutiug tho people, why not send
mo in your stead t"
''You, in your lino clothes! I should
Millie," mumbled Mrs. Chutter, with the
stopierof tho camphor ImUIo between
her tooth.
"Why can't my uncloV mantle fall on
nte, nuutio? I was intending to Uirrow
tho frock."
"Well, if I do nay it, you've got the
Vance common seuee. Some young men
of vour bringing up would lo ahamod
to drive u soap cart."
"Humph! Some young uumi would
bo fool," Mid tho deacon, with warmth.
"Xobotly has any call to U ashamed to
deliver such rioap as I make. If you'u
mind to run tho team to-day, Harvey,
I shall bo obloeged to you."
Fifteen minutes later the worthy dea
con was extending hi aching length
upon tho sitting-room loungo, and gnr.ing
out of the window at his youthful proxy,
who, duly initiated into tho mysteries
of the calling, was driving a.vuy iu tho
big blun cart. llcliliui jouiiood ud
creaked an empty nsb-bin, Hanked by
two empty barrels of soap ; but the swing
ing scat was clean and comfortable, com
manding a fine view of the surrounding
country.
A hiilf-milo and more the road wound
through his uncle's fertile ncie, for Dea
con Chutter was withal a farmer. Farm
ing, indeed, was his chief vocation, soap
boiling being an accessory venture grow
ing out of sundry cxtensivo experiments
in the tiso of leached ashes as n fertilizer.
It was ono of those tuneful mornings
in oarly Juno when all nnturo joins in a
glad doxology. The newlv arrived bob
olinks, tipsy with glee, carrolled in tho
meadows. The orioles, hanging in their
hammocks in tho elms, could scarcely
work for singing. Gay breezes whis
pered Ioc to tho graceful young clover,
then danced away to dirt with the coy
i hill-sido birches. Kverywhcro were life
(and motion irradiated by tho benignant
sun For Harvey Vance's study weak
ened eye tbeie was too much glare, too
mucn nutter, no lost, no inuu in imt
ting on his bluo goggle?.
Who cares if they do mako me look
like a fiogr mused lie, as ho sett leu
them astride his aristocratic nose.
"Thanks to them, and to change of air,
my poor optics nro undoubtedly im
proving. 1 shall bo back to college by
fall. litt! ha! if tho fellows could seo mo
now!"
And here, to tho infinite surprise of
tho staid Dobiu, his new master broko
into a rollicking class song a song ab
ruptly ended as a turn in tho road re
vealed a fiirm-hotiso.
"If I peddle soap, I'll peddle it with
duo decorum," solilrquiicl the youth,
knocking upon tho back door with the
handle of bis whip.
To havo seen the capable air with
which Iu measured ashes bushel by
bushel, giving in exchange money, or
gallons of soap, according to the custom
er's desire, ono would havo pronounced
him bred to tho soap business. Sinco
bis month's rustication at his Aunt
ChutlcrV bo had made tho acquaintance
of most of tho farmers along the river,
and these expressed their gratification
at meeting "a judgo's son who was not
afraid to work," but outside tho parish
limits bis triumphal inarch torminntid.
He was a stranger in a strange land.
One man asked if ho had bought out tlo
deacon; a second hoped ho was not pro
posing to run an opposition team ; and
tho loyal widow Cleaves could hardly be
persuaded to sunender her ashes, be
cause, forsooth, she preferred to deal
with Deacon Chutter.
Obedient to his unclo's instructions,
at her ccttago the young man took a
cross-road to Kondnll's, a summer hotel,
familiarly styled "Tho Eyrie."
You'll find it a long three miles," had
boon Mrs. Clcave's parting remark.
"Tbreo miles, and not n noighbor be
tweou heio and tboro ; I couldn't blame
tho widow if sho wanted to change her situ
ation," mused tho deacon's deputy, scan
ning tho wostcrn horizon. "Shouldn't
wonder if that cloud yonder meant bus
iness. I thought tho sun was too bright
this morning. Well, a little high toned
thunder will drown this everlasting
racket."
Facing about to wedgo in position an
empty soap barrel, ho observed two ladies
driving up tho hill in a basket phaeton.
'That looks liko Kendall's tenm,"
bo thought. "Thoso ladies aro some of
bis boarders, I supposo Tom Cnven
der's mother and sister, for aught I know.
I huvo heard they were stopping at tho
Kyrio. Goodness! wouldn't it bo a joke
if I should fall in with them to-day!"
Meinwhilo Tho younger lady in the
carriage was ineirily commenting on tho
ipia-i soap-man's active figure, conspic
uously and amply clad iu tho deacon's
canvass frock and overalls.
"1 bopo bo isn't a perambulating ma
nine, mamma."
"It's tho vciy c.xrt that frightened tho
pony1" was the terrified response. '"Do
let mo get out, Lila ! Ob ! oh !"
Hut already tho borso was backing
down the hill. Harvey sprang from tho
cart, and grasped tho refractory animal
by tho bridle, just in tinio to pievent the
carriago from overturning in tho ditch.
' Thank you thank you very much,"
said tho girlish driver, tho color rushing
back into her fnco. "Now if you'll bo
kind enough to load our pony past your
cart wo shall bo jet moio obliged.
A pretty girl stylish too, but alxwv
iuably patronizing,'' thought tho young
Sophomore, stalking icscntfully at tho
pony's head.
"There, now your cart N behind us,
we shall have no further trouble. I'm
sorry to lme detained you, sir. Infinite
ly much obliged."
In leaving the ladies Harvey mechan
ically raised his hat, the deacon's bat
alas! yellowed and frayed by farm ser
vice. The touch set trying tho ashes
iiK)ii its brim, giving our receding hero
tho effect of being caught away in a
cloud. A little blinded, but laughing
bcliuul lu goggles, bo went back to old
Dobbin, and united for tho ladies to go
on iu advance.
Hut what ailed that surprising pony?
Tho young bidy chirruped to him ; he
would not budge. Sho snapped tho
whip; be stixid as stiff as tho wooden
horse of tho Tioj.ms.
'Oh, daughter, daughter, bo's balk
ing'" cried the elder lady, who apjH'iuvd
to lo an invalid. "If there's anything
I'm afraid of, it's a balking horse."
"Allow mis madam," said Harey,
iignin advancing.
Ho twisted the animal's ear a moment
to divert his attention, then took him by
tho hit and led him a few paces.
"See, nuunniii, tho pony lias got over
his sulks. Thank you sir."
Tho oung lady resumed tho reins j
tho fraction quadruped promptly re
fused to ttir.
"Lot mo cot out, I.Ik : I won't go an-
other step with him."
"He don't win to ls going," isiud tho
daughter with n vexed laugh. "You
know you can't walk a rod. You'll sure
ly have a relapse, mamma, if you don't
Bit still."
Again Harvey led tho pony. Again
tho tantalizing nog stiffened in his har
ness the instant 3Ii.s Lila took the reins.
Many times was this farce repeated, and
many wore tho minutes wasted Mean
time tho sky had become overcast, and
thunder was muttering in tho distance.
"My mother has been very ill. If sho
is caught in tho shower'sho may get her
death," cried Lila, in distress, Oh, what
shall wo do?"
"If you'll pardon tho suggestion, I
might drive you to the Eyrie, if that is
your destination," said Harvey, with a
deprecatory glanco at his masquerading
costume.
Oh, will you? Hut thero is your
horso and cart?''
"I could come back for them "
"And with all mamma's shawls nnd
pillows, -the phaeton is hardly wido
enough for us two."
"That is true ; it is a Lilliputian af
fair." The youth was gravely testing the
light springs and braces.
"Is there danger of breaking down?
Then you go with mamma, and I'll drive
tho cart."
"Lila Ca vender! the idea!" expostula
ted the invalid.
"Tom C'avender's mother and sister, by
tho ashes of my uncle! Confound it,
what a scrapo!" was tho young soap
merchants inward ejaculation as ho
awaited tho ladios' pleasure.
"What better can I do, mamma? I
shall rido famously. Unless you're
afraid to trust mo with your borso," the
young lady added, with a glance toward
Harvey.
"Not in the least. Ho's far from being
a fiery Bucephalus."
Struck with tho incongruity of the re
mark from sucli a source, -Miss Lila lost
nil control of her dimples.
"That seat is su-wmled between tho
heavens and the car h, liko Mohammed' j
collin, n amiuu," sho jested, by way of
cloaking her untimely mirth.
"One ought to ho slut into it out of a
catapult."
To aid the young lady in mounting,
Harvey silently extended a hand,whoso
exceeding smuttiness was intensified by a
seal ring that glittered upon the little
finger. Miss Lila glanced curiously at
the line cameo with its quaint setting.
Who was this anomalous being who
sported costly ornaments and quoted from
the classics? And where, had sho seon
that peculiar cameo before, or ono like
it? Ah! now sho recollected, Tom had
worn it homo last vacation, when ho and
his chum had exchanged rings. But how
had this eoap-man becoino possessed of
it? Could it bo that ho nnd Hurvey
Vance wero identical? Tom had said
that Harvey was spending tho summer
in the neighborhood. This must be ho.
Yes sho was sure of it.
Obedient to tho young man's will, that
unaccountable pony darted away on tho
wings of tell wind. Closo behind, bead
down, tail up, followed old Dobbin in a
heavy canter which seemed to shake tho
very loaves on tho trees. Charged upon
by tho empty soap barrel, Miss Lila
slipped to tho other sido of tho seat and
clung to the ash-bin. A milowaspassod,
two miles. Tho gablo-roofod Eyrie
loomed in tho distance. On spod tho
pony; on lumbered old Dobbin;
on swooped tho storm-cloud. A dozen
guests crowded out upon the hotol
piazza to witness tho exciting race.
"How whito Mrs. Ca vender looks!''
cried one.
"Where did she pick up that fantastic
driver?"
"Is that Miss Lila in tho cart?" ex
claimed the gentleman addressed. "Well,
she's a girl of mettle! Ha, hero comes
tho rain."
As tho phaeton dashed up ho rushed
out with an open umbrella to escort Mrs.
Caveuder Into tho house. Iu mounting
tho stops sho turned toward Harvoy.
"You havo dono us a groat sorvico,
sir. I assure you wo aro 'grateful. My
daughter will see thatyouaioreconipeiis
od for your time and trouble."
"Tho dickens sho will!" thought the
indignant substitute.
Standing beneath tho dripping caves,
with rivulets of lyo coursing down his
cheeks, ho assisted the moist young lady
to alight. "I am wo aro deeply in
debted to you," bho stammered, blush
ingly. "-My mother "
"Has takon no cold, I trust," said he
loftily. "Oocd-afternoon.
And horse, cart and driver disappeared
kitcbonward.
In putting tho cut to rights that
evening iinrvey discovered a giuny
object caught between the seat and tho
ash-bin. It proved to bo a lady's pocket
handkerchief, bearing in ono corner tho
nanio ol "Lila Uaveiuler. Ho handed
it to his mint for bleaching purposes,
mm recetvnu in return a tetter ironi
Tom.
"My mother and sister havo perched
at tho Jvyne, on i-.niden Hill," it ran.
"My mother is getting up from n fover,
and is Imund to get up as high as sho
can. If you're anywhere near their
secluded nest, do peep in hihhi them.
They'll bo oluirnied to make your ac
quaintance."
"1 believe I'll tako that hankerchief to
Miss Cnvender to-morrow, auntie, and
have it off my mind," remarked Harvey.
carelesly, as he folded the letter.
"Well or you might send it by th
stage. Hut Harvey wiib deaf tt the
suggestion.
Tho next evening, faultlessly attired,
and minus Sectacles, ho presented him
self at tho Eyrie, and was cordially
welcomed by both Mr. Ciender and
her daughter. Convinced that ho was
not rucogiiitcd as squire of the soap part,
ho mw no necessity for proclaiming him
self such. Iu making his tint call why
fthould he introduce himsell clown?
You've uuuU) quite visit," was his
aunt's salutation when Harvey entered
the sitting-room.
"Was the girl glad to get her handkor
chiof?" "To tell the truth, auntie, I didn't give
it toher."
"Humph! Strange how a handsome
young woman will weaken a chap's
memory," observed the deacon, slyly, as
his wife bandaged the ffending ankle.
'I don't see hut Harvey I'll have to call
again
Ho
lo did call again, and again, and
in. Indeed, his ridos to tho Eyrio
nga
grew so frequent that his uncle one day
tensingly counselled him to buy a second
saddlo-borsc.
"Or get a carriago that will hold two,"
amended his aunt. At which the youth
flushed guilty, confirming Mrs. Chuttor
in her private opinion that bo was very far
gone."
He went further yet that ovening
even to the length of proposing to Miss
Lila.
The littlo coquette only laughed, and
bade him not ho absurd.
Absurd? Ho would really like to
know what sho meant.
Oh, thev were both so young.
Harvey looked hint, and intimated
that ho, at least, was ncaring tho down
hill of life.
And he didn't know her well enough.
Tho youth eagerly protested that bo
know lier well enough to lovo her.
"Hesides, I'm not sure but I like
another young man better."
"Ob, if you care for somebody else,
why, then why, in that case " Harvey
found tho English tongue terribly in
tricate, and rose with precipitation.
"I met him first, you know," said Mis
Liln. dropping her eyes npologoticnlly,
"and I am under gi eat obligations to
him."
"Oh, it's all right You'ro all right, I
mean ; but I think Tom might have told
me."
"Told you what?"
"About this other fellow."
"There in't much to tell," said Miss
Lila demurely. "He hasn't como for
ward." Harvey drew on his glove with
a mystified air. "But I am looking for
him any day now, for tho Eyrio is nearly
out of soap."
"You bewitching littlo tease!''
Miss Lila's cheeks wero eddying with
dimplos deep enough to drown a man's
hoart. Perhaps they made Harvey's
head swim. I can't say. I only know
that ho laid hold of the young lady's
bands at that moment in tho most giddy
f ishion, and she seemed quite willing to
let him steady himself in that manner.
"Well, Harvey, I expect to bo on my
legs again to-morrow," observed tho
facetious deacon, at breakfast ; "and
when I call at the Eyrio I guess you'd
better let mo give that young woman
her handkerchief."
"Thank you very much ; I attended
to that last night."
"It didn't seem just right to keep her
out of it so long, Harvey," remarked his
aunt, dryly, as she passed his coffee.
"You ought to have paid her interest."
"Jlump! don t you be n nute con
cerned, wife," said tho deacon, wit!) a
mischievous wink. "Depend upon it,
Harvey has squared accounts with that
young woman beforo this, and taken her
noto of hand. lies driven business
sinco that day I set him up in the cart."
