Tho burned district fit Summcrsulle will bo spocdily rebuilt. Itains have been copious at Lowibton and surrounding country. A big fir tree was lately split by light ning in Clarke county, W. T. Indictment for nrson at Weston has been found against Isaac Syhe'stor. Pendleton has shipped 1501 sacks of wool this season cighing 4J0, lid pounds. The New York, Sun, Democratic, tells its Darty it will be no holiday task to boat Blaine. Moses Lake, in the Big Bend Country, has filled up twenty feet in as many years. A wild woman, no one knows, chacs the childien of Beaver creek, Clackamas county. James M. Moore, aged 76, an old resi dent nt tho Falls of the Willamette, died last week. Corn promises well in Jackson county and somo growing grain is thrown down by the heavy rains. Early sown grain about Spokane looks well, but that sown late must have rains to give it a good crop. Tho Agricultural Society of Clarko county, W. T., has decided to hold their annual fair in September. Tho great banking house of H"tch & Fish, and the Metropolitan Bank have resumed payment all right. Eastern dispatches are mado up in great part, now-a-days, of political gos sip that is entirely unreliable. Capt. McAlmond, of the schooner Champion, has captured 1700 seals off Cape Flattery since January: The hay crop will bo thort near Olympia and on Upper Chehalis; the timothy meadows are full of cheat. Democratic conventions in California have nominated new men for Congress in place of the present representatives.. The burning of the government saw mill at Camp Spokane was accompanied by the loss ot two million teet ot lumber Blaine will travel about some this sum' imJla3 cta thP: raer and may make a fow politii epeecnes where they will do the mi good. New York independents, under thi leadership of Harper's Weekly and Tho Times are organizing a movement against Blaine. Gentle showers and cloudy weather done much good to crops through Umatilla county. Late sown grain has a splendid start. Near Seattle the outlook ' for hops is good, as the vines have luxuriant growth. The crop will be enormous. Last year hops sold, 100 bales, at 27 cents. Samuel J. Tildcnhas written at length giving reasons for a positive declination of the Democratic nomination for tho presidency. News from San Francisco is to the ef fect that rains have continued through the State and the result has been great damage to ctops in all quarters. Along Wild Horn creek can bo seen the track of the late water spout. A Helena paper says stories of cloud bursts nnd damage come from all parts of Mon tana Territory. The police have trouble in New York to keep Chinese from landing, 'ihey come from the West Indies in steamers and try to smuggle on shore by some means or other. Bill Watkinds' harness store, that was run in his wife's namo is closed by at tachments. Thero seem to be more debts than stock. He seems to be out of luck in office holding and in trade. . Sanders, assessor of Multnomah coun ty, says that in making the assessment he found the people prosperous and prospects generally good for crops ; hay will bo abundant and a large fruit crop. In the English Commons an amend ment to tho franchise bill in favor of fe male suffrage was rejected by vote of 27 to 135. Gladstone intimated that the amendment would bo apt to defeat the bill. Chief Peter, a Makah Indian, Jeff Davis, another, have bought a vessel of thirty tons and the same is registered at tho Collector's office in Port Townsend. The first instance on record this side the continent. Republicans in Ohio and elsewhere will throw oft" on Harper's Weekly because it throws off on Blaine. At Cleveland news dealers are badly left as they cannot sell tho papers that oppose Blaine's election. The fall of Berber, in Upper Egypt, is confirmed. It is also said that General Gordon is fighting his way through Lower Egypt. It is also said that El Mahdi has been badly defeated by tribes hostile to him. The rebels are marching north waid in Egypt and tho indications are that they will capture the whole country unless tliey are soon driven back. JJcrber is fallen and all important points are falling into tho hands of El Mahdi and his lieutenants. A great popular demonstration will take place in August, in London, for tho Euroo of overawing tho Houeo of ords in f.nor of the pending franchise bill It is to be an imnienso popular gathering, conducted with great dis play, the greatest in many years. A lad, Johnnie Harpsr, whoeo father lives at the mouth of. Union Flat, Whit roan county, took strychnine last west No motive is known. He took the stuff from a bottle kept in the smoke hotise, and went off to die utder a drift plie .across tho fields. A farmer in Clarke countv. W. T.. hail a heifer killed by a cougar, so Alonzo v aru took nis dog and gun ana treea tho cougar with tho first and shot it with the last. On the way back he treed and shot a wild cat. Tho only Concressmnn renominated in California by the Democrats is Budd, who several times wrote to decline being again a candidate. Ho was a young follow that was put up against Page, as a good joke, it not being supposed possible to elect him, but ho was elected triumphantly and having had a year's experience at Washington he is very tired of it. He was renominated by acclima tion. A few days ago a meeting of tho Hcppner Wool Grower's 'Association was held. A constitution and by-laws were adopted, and the follow ing officers worn elected : President, Hon. James B. Sperry; vice presidents, Henry C. Gay, Alex. J. Thompson ; treasurer, S. It. Reeves; secretary, Theron E. Pell; directors, N. A. Kelly, William Penland, James Jones, William Dutton, C. A. Rhea, William Rush, J. M. Hager and uoya uunningnam. A correspondent writing from Bucna Vista, Uregon, to the West bide says: cut worms are playing havoc with tho gardons in our community. Some have planted cabbage and tomatoes four times and still the worms have got them all. Allio McLaughlin had twelve acres of late oats entirely ruined with them. We learn from Mr. Hall, of Woodburn, that many fields of grain on French prairie aro badly injured by these pests. To day we isited a field of fifteen acres planted in potatoes. 'Hie worms have eaten about half tho vines. Wo also visited E. G. Heath's extensive gardens and found him and two hired men en gaged in gathering thorn fiom around his plants and placing them in cans and carrying them aw ay to burn or drown them. Mr. II. claims that if they are killed in tho ginlcn tho eggs in the females will hatch and produce more worms. Mr. Hughes, Russell & Co.'s manager at Portland, called this week and reports sales good. This being the second yoai of their branch house on tho coast thoir last year's record gives them a good anding with threshmen. Mr. T. B. ait, the agent here, has sold a number Russell engines this year already, and says the engines aro lor the "iioss" thresher. When to Cut Grass. The analytical chemist of the Agricul tural Department, summing up the re sult of analysis of nearly all the cultiva ted grasses, says it is apparent that in most ca&s the time of bloom, or there about, is the fittest for cutting grasses in order to obtain the most nourishment and largest relatively profitable crops, and for the following reasons: The amount of water has diminished, and the shrink age will therefore bo los. The weight of the crop will bo (he largest in propor tion to the nutritive value of its constitu ents. The amount of nitrogen not pres ent as albumoids will be at lowest point, fibro will not be so excessivo ns to pre vent digestion, and tho nutritive ratio will be more advantageous. If cut ear lier tho shrinkage is larger, althongh tho fibro is less and albumen is a little larger. Tho palatability may bo in creased, but the to'al nutriments to the acre will not bo so large and tho nutri tive ratio will be more abnormal. The disadvantages of late cutting are evident increase of fibre destroying tho digesti bility of the nutriments, and tho falling off of the albumen byconversion into amides. This is not mado up by the larger crop cut Keroseno tor Insects. ProfessorTHubbard gives tho follow ing way of of mixing keroseno and soap for spraying trees or watering plants in fested by insects: Kerosene, two gal lons ; common Boap, or whale oil soap, half pound; water, one gallon. Heat the solution of ecnp, and add it boiling hot to the kerosene. Churn the mix ture by means of a force pump and spray nozzle for fivo or ten minutes. Tho emulsion, if perfect, forms a cream, winch tniclccns on cooling, and should adhere without oiliness to the surface of glass. Dilute, before using, one part of the emulsion with nine parts of cold water. The above formula gives throe gallons of emulsion, and makes, when diluted, thirty gallons of wash. Tho percentage of kerosene may be increased somewhat without danger, and stronger washes may be needed for some kinds of insects. Farmers certainly err seriously, says tho New England Farmer, when they spend valuable time using worthless tools; but it is of little tibo to urge a man to plow his land well when we know that he has not a tool on hi land fit to work with. Onr advice to a man who proposes to mako farming a busi ness would be to hell off many of his old tools occasionally at auction, or to men who have but little use for fanning tool, and replace them with the best, VtfH tested, new styles he can find. A, new plow ioint may cost fifty conts to u dollar, but it may enable the plowman and team to cam two dollars where- the old one would not corn one. l'oor plow inc. bv the u-e of a worn out p'ow, may diminish' acrop ery materially.
