The weather during tho present season has been remarkably fine, anil more liko thooistcrn climato thn i-" uiial with us on the west coast. IVuuliful show ers havo prevailed in thii region, but have not helped Kastcrn Oregon, whore they feel tho need of rain. So far ns ropoits go ao hoar only goml words as to crop prospects in gen eral. Spring gnun and gardens are the hotter for tho recent rain, though it was only a guiitlo shower. Much complaint is made of tho ravages of worms, and especially tho cut worm hasbcou an eil to corn mid gardens ; their existence is phoiiomimd this year, and their dama ges aro very considerable. Fioni this on vo may expect more trouble from all sorts of insect depredations. Tho foreign market shows a some what firmer feeling nnd small advance tho piiht few days, based, no doubt, on poorer crop prospects in England, where rain has damaginl wheat to some extent, but news in general is in favor of jin average crop tho world over. Tho repotts of tho agricultural department favor u wheat crop of :150,000,000 bu-diol this sooson, which ts about average, though in 1SS2 tho wheat yield was 525,000,000 bushels. The fact that all countries will luno a fair average harvest aflicts tho market anil gives speculation no excuse for ex citement. Wo could fnmNh greater particulars, but the summary ot facts is in favor of a fair crop tho world over. Wo shall be. ablo to gather nioro satit facfory data as to crop prospects in July, ami tlmll then famuli all the details we can. Wool is held down by various cir cumstances and factories go clow in making their year's purchase of stock. The wool buying business is iu com pnratinoly a few hands nnd the mills leave handling of it to their agents who plan to uiako quotation to suit their In tertiti and divide tho business rather than compete with each other. Tho tendency to weakness is apparent. Tlio hop prospect aro quite good for the coming sotson. Mr. GttorgHrreu, woirvertvil on ho hop quontitnis makjug tour pt th hop field of Oregon, said iuforna tit he thall mke hi liNtd quartcM.at Salem lor Uie next few weeks. vYcjW SW'i "W Ho says tlio outlook for price is equally as good as it was List season, ai-d the yield promises abundant. W.Tal madge to-day issuod his annual estimate of the spring and winter wheat bnein. His calculations aro on reports received from tho secretaries of slato boaidsof agriculturo and statistical reporih of states. His results aro: Spring n heat, .Minnesota, JSobraska, Iowa, Dakota and Wisconsin, total, 141,000,000 bushels; winter wheat in all other states and ter ritories, :i75,O0O,OOO bushels, or a grand total of f'il0,000,000 bushels. The usual method by which girdled applo trees aro restored is by inserting a numlicr of scions ever tho wound, with their onds sharpened flat so that they may be Mruck under tho edge of the bark on both sides tho wound. If tree are girdlod by mice or rabbits in tho winter, some method, should early be pursued to save thorn. Tho very first measure after tho mischief is discovered is to protect tho wounded surface by tying over it hcony rags, or banking earth against it. This keeps tho surface of tho wood soft, and pmvents checking mid drying by wind. It is useless to in hert scions or to apply other romedics until tho trees begin to start in spring. A pratico equally us good as that of in orting scions, and perhaps better, is to trim smoothly the odces of tho wound. una" to insert over tho girdled placo a ring of bark taken from a branch of a similar size. Tio this ring in firmly, wax over mo junctures ana neap eartu about tho whole. If a limb of sufficient bizo cannot be sacrifiod. uatch out the ring with two or tliree pieces of bark. If the joints nro mado tight, and tho work done when tho sap is rising vigorously, the job will bo a success. If tree are healthy there is no need of letting them die from girdling in winter or spring. Fresh cow dung plastered over tho du nudetl surface, and tied on tiehtlv with a l ubund: nee of clothes, will always sa e lryos that aro girdled before July, and it will usually save thoso girdled later. 1 have known no less thnn a hundred trees to bo saved in this manner, and 1 do not recall a einglo failure.
