Ono of the grcatost evils ntt'octing com
munities of tho present day, not to wy
misfortunes to tlio individual, is the
fanatical idea that tho accumulation of
much wealth tends to much happiness.
Tho idea is false, vicious and ruinous to
individual and fjmily and social enjoy
ment. It is not all of lifo to live, and to
live to gratify the sensual passions is to
live, in tho lowest piano of lifo. Ho who
make two blades of grass to grow where
but ono blado grow Ijcfore is a benefactor
to his race, considered from the stand
point of the mcro animal economy. He
ho who spreads the love of virtue for
virtue's sake, who, moro favred than
his follows, teaches others right rules for
mental and social enjoyment, who. mul
tiplies rational pleasures and teaches
his lees fortunate brothers how to secure

ordinary advantages from our common
schools, will find in the Grango ample
opportunities lor magnifying nis own
enjoyments by ministering to the intelli
gence, culture and direct enjoyment of
Ins fellow members, lho Untunes are
institutions whpre the valuable lessons
of the schools, the farm and tho house
hold can be reviewed, familiarized, and
made useful and practical ; where men
and women can accustom themselves to
public reading, reciting, and speaking ;
where valuable knowledge can bo re
ceived and imparted by lectures, essays
and discussions, and in the exchange
the higher and nobler qualities of human
nature can bo developed and made more
lovely and more lovable ; and where the
fartherless, though poor and burdened
with caro and sore affliction, can feel
that they aro not doomed, isolated and
alone, to toil on through weary life,
without friends, sympathy, society or
hope of advancement, but know that
they are members of a great fraternal
brotherhood, milled hy a common in
tercst and laboring for the good of all.
Then let us put fortn our best efforts
to build up our subordinate Granges and
make them temples of wisuom, equality
and orottieriy love.

A correspondent of the Pacific Rural
Press says :
About six or seven years ago Mr,
Brightman introduced a certain species
of grass, which, for want of a better
name, was called "ilnglitman s grass."
Although the grass appeared to do very
well on his place, there did not appear to
be much uesiro on tho part of the notch
bors to give it a trial, and no ono seemed
to know what kind of grass it was, nor
whether it u us of any value as a fodder
plant or not Two years ago ono of mv
noighlxirs set a few roots in his garden,
where it wan occasionally lrngatea aur
ing tho bummer, when it made a very
rank growth, and spreading to such ex
tent that it was resolved to eradicato it
if possiblo. The ground was thoroughly
dug up and every root apparently le
movod, but all to no purpose, as it
seemed to gather fresh strength, ana
camo up stronger and moro luxuriantly
the following summer than ever. It was
all dug up that is, all tho roots that
could be found several times during
the summer, but it had como to stay
there. A few days ago I called on the
gentleman, and ho showed mo somo of
the roots of tho so-called JJrightman's
grass, which I recognized as evergreen
millot, as I had received some loots a
year ago from tho University, 'llio gen
tlcmau in auestion has planted out a
large tract of the same kind of grass, and
is very enthusiastic about it, claiming that
cattle and hogs eat both the plants aim
ths roots with iclish, and roots produce
very largely, and can be plowed up every
year and gathered without in any way
injuring or diminishing tho plant. On
reasonably strong soil it grows very well
without irrigation. But it should not
bo planted where it would not be dosira
bio to have it at some future time.
According to tho returns from tho De
partment of Agriculture at Washington,
Illinois has tho largest number of horses,
1,028,094; New York tho largest num
ber of cows, 1.510,001; Texas has the
largest number of oxen and other cattle,
2,277,700, nnd also of sheep, 7,050,270;
and Iowa tho larger number of hogs,
4,800,993, and also of mules, 191,917.
It is stated in French agricultural
journals that French cheeso mukors mc
not satisfied unless they get from .$150
to $200 per annum from each cow.
This is, owing to their e.xpertness and
thoroughness in tho mannfactnro of
cheeso, and each particular agricultural
district of France has attained a coleb
rity for the making of somo particular
variety of cheese, developing into a
special and important industry.
