The viritoT adracced a few step, and,
still standing in deep shadow, said with

may be pardoned. I am desired by Her
3Iajesty to ask a favor from Madame la

that she will have the goodness to ex

-The obligation will be mine if I can
fulfill even the least of Her Majesty's

fully. -The ra-e is this," explainwl the gen

the Counter, with amiable alacrity, de
taching the precioas jewel forthwith and
depositing it, without misgivingin the,
outstretched palm of the imperial mes
senger ; for, indeed, diamonds were al
most as plentiful in the existence of this
fortunate lady as in the pages of Lothair,
andhe attached no more importance to
tnem than did the jewel-laden heroines
of our great and lamented Premier.
The Counters Lctowed a Fmile aral a

inclination as he made his exit. Once
safely outside the box the ari-tocratic
features of ibis high bred imperial emi-
.ary suddenly lot their serene expres
sion of dignified gravity and relaxed
intoa triumphant 3IephiitopheIen grin.
Shortly afterward Uount nannou re
turned. ""I have been talking to D,"
he remarked, a-i he seated himself.
"Clever fellow, D . I am not surprised
at the KinjMror'b partiality for him ; he
mu.st find him so useful when he is in
want of an idea."
"Who is I) V inquired the Countess,
with languid interest.
fcThat is rather a difficult question,'
replied tho Count, smiling; "there are
several editions of his biography all
different, probably none of them true.
Ho is successful, which is tho chief
Ioint ; moreover, ho is entertaining.aud,
at any rate, looks and Fpeaks like a gen
tleman, which in thti-e evil days is some
thingeven much. Tenez, ho has just
entered the Emperor's box tho man in
tho black coat."
fcI that Monier D ?" exclaimed the
Countess, waking up to a mild interest
in the fubject ; "if go ho has been here
whilo you were away. Ho came in on
the part of the Empress, and carried off
one of my earrings, which Her Majesty
wished to compare with one of tho
Countcsd W'n."
'D 1 Impossible! I was talking to
him tho whole time I was absent, and he
only left me at tho top of the staircaso

"Nevertheless mon ami, ho has been
here, and taken my earring. Seel it is
gone."
"Effectively," agreed tho Count, with
a grim smile, "but I) has not taken it.
It U to tho last degree unlikely that tho
Empress would mako such a request.
Doiwnd upon it you have been th vic
tim of a thief, got up as an accurate
copy of tho distinguished looking D ."
fcImjos.iblo:" cried tho Countons in
her turn. "Tho affair is alvsolutely as I
tell you. It wa- Monsieur D- , tho ver
itable Monster D I co opposite, who
camo into this box and took away my
diamond. Only wait u littlo and he will
bring it back intact."
"To wait a littlo is to lessen tho chance
of its rucou'ry. In any case I will go
and inquire of 1 , if I can get at him,
if ho has been seized with a sudden at

of the Empres having wnt him roaming

With this the Count departed, and the

The Countess was duly commiserated
by sympathizing friends, who one and
a& declared, behind her baci, that they
would never have been guilty of the
imbecility of trusting so valuable a
possession to the tender mercies of how
ever fascinating a stranger: bat nothing
more was heard of the stolen jewel until
the following day at noon, when Count
Ivanoff received a note frcm D to the
effect, that as he could not help consider
ing hiroelf partly responsible for the
loss of the diamond which had dis
appeared through the agency of his
counterpart, he had taken an early
opportunity of interviewing the Chief of
Police, who assured hhn he had good
reason to believe the thief had already
been traced as far as Brussels.
Early in the afternoon the Countess
was abmt to start for her daily drive in
the Bois. The frozen snow lay deep
upon the ground, and her sledge, with its
two jet black Russian horses jingling
belLs merrily in the frosted air, stord
waiting in the court yard while the
Countess donned her furs.
A servant entering announced that an
officer of police in plain ekitbes asked
prmision to sp-ak with 3Ime. la Coun
tess concerning the ket diamond.
-But, certainly," agreed inadame
graciously, "let the officer be shown into
the boudoir.-'
Into the bondmr presently came the
Counter, statelv, beautiful, fur-ciad,

and bowed profoundly in the presence
of so much high bom loveliness, while
Le said with the utmost respect, at the

table : -
-I am sent by an order of the Chiet de
Police to inform Madam !a Countess that
the stolen diamond tuts l-n satisfactorily
traced, tat there. Is unfortunately some
little difnrultv connected with indenti-
fication. I am charged, therefore, to beg
that Madame la Countess will have the
sxodnes- to intrust the fellow earring to
the police for a short period, in order
that it may lu compared with the one
found in the possession of the suspected
thief. Madame will find that the letter
I bring corroborates my statement."
The Countess glanced hastily through
the letter, and ringing the bell de-ired
that her maid might be told to bring the
remaining earring immediately ; this was
done, and the dapper little man, bowing
deferentially, departed with the precious
duplicate safely in his pos-tsiou.
TIw Counted descended to her sludge
and drove to the clnb to call for her hus
band en route for the BoiJ. Crossing the
Place de la Concorde she related to him
the late-t incident in the story of the dia-i
mond earring.
"You never were induced to ghe up
the other!" cried Count I vanhoff incredu
lously.
-But I tell you, mon ami, an officer
of police camo himself to fetch it, bring
ing a letter from his superior vouching
for the truth of his statement-"
'If tho Prefect himself had come I
don't think I should hate been cajoled
into letting him liave it after la-a night's
experience," laughed her husband.
"However, for the second time of ask
ing, we will go and inquire."
The coachman turned and drove as
directed to tho Bureau of Police, at which
the Count had lodged his complaint the
night before. After a somewhat pro
tracted delay the Count rejoined his wife
with a scmirrim look of amusement up
on his handsome, hirsute face.
The police know nothing of your
detective, or his epistolary efforts," he
said, dniwing tho fur rug up to bis chin
as tho impatient horses sped away merrily
over the frozen snow; "It was the wroug
man they had got hold of at Brussels.
