Nothing pays so well for the amount invested as sheep, when well taken care of, yet nothing pajs so badly as an in vestment if they are left to take care of themselves, abandoned to the attacks of all their enemies, and not particularly protected and nutured by tho provident and kind shepherd. Nothing is more helpless, less able to defend itself, to prono to bo preyed upon, so imprudent and so foolish as a sheep, and, therefore, nothing demands more completely the care, attention and protection of its owner. As to the breed of sheep to buy, exper ience has larirch settled tho question. Most m"ii think it is economy to l amble over the country, and pick up heie nnd there what is known as natio ewes, and eioss them upon a full blood buck. Hut this is bad policy. AVhcn sheep aro not enred for (nnd natives never ate), they become more or less wild, and are unwil ling to bo restrained by nightly herding, and conseotiontlv irenticntlv dos'elop dis eases by being resti (lined in their habits, if not, they become restless and are not piolilahlo. Then, again, mixing up small squads of sheep from every section ol the countiy has n strong tendency to create disease, and theieby ruin the investment. The Cotsivolds. I3akcwell, or Leicester sheep, accouling to high authority tire too large for ourpasturngo and climate, and any fanner who has done well with them would, in all probability, have done' much better with a smaller breed, llio Southdown is the finest mutton cheep in the world, and as good as most of them for wool, but, then, they are too delicate. Tho Merino is by long odds tho best sheep for our country. I . h. Economist. Food Makes The Man. Speaking roughly, about tin co-fourths, by weight, of tho body of man if consti tuted by the fluid be consumes, and the remaining fourth by tho solid material ho appropriates. It is therefore no figure of speech to fay that food makes the man. Wo might even put the case in a stiongcr light and allirm that man is his food. It is stiictly and literally true that "A ninn who drinks beer thinks beer." We make this concession to tho teetotalers, and will add that good sound beer is by no means a bad thought factor, whatever may bo tho intellectual valuo of the commodity commonly 6old and consumed under that name I It cannot obviously bo a matter of indifference what a man eats and drinks, llo is, in fact, choosing his animal and moral character when be selects his food. It is impossible for him to change his in herited nature, simply because modifica tion of development occupy nioro than an individual life, but ho can help to inako tho particular stock to 'which he belongs inoro or less beery or fleshy or watery, and so on, by tho way he feeds. Wo know tho effect tho feeding of animals has on their temper and very natures ; how tho dog fed on raw meat and chained up so that ho cannot work oll'tho (superfluous nitrogonized matorial by exercise becomo a savago beast, whilo the sumo creature fed on bread and milk would bo tamo as a lamb. The same law of results is npplicablo to man, and every living organism is propaeated 'in its kind" with a physical and mental likeness. This is the underlying prin ciple of development. Happily tho truth is beginning, though slowly and imper fectly, to find recognition it has long been denied. It is possible that in the natural desiro to sccuro tho best, put est supplies of food and drink for man we au pushing matters a little to extremes and becoming ridiculous. Utopia is a long way oil', and 'Hygoia" has not been'built. It is however, dosirablo that we should aim high and make tho teach ings of physiological science the pi ocepth of our daily life and conduct. Wo may not be able to reach our ideal, but pio giesswill be advanced by striving to make its attainment an object. "What toeat, drink and avoid" is" a rational proposition, and if son.o of us aie be coming a littlo unreasonable in tho attempt to hobo it, at least we aro on tho right road and ought to bo encouraged lather than abashed by the not unkindly criticism our endeavors nro calling fmth.
