Kditor Willamette Farmer: According to appointment I look tho M earner for Dayton, Yamhill county, on January 4th, and on the morning of the ;ith met with McMinnville Grange. After installing the officers, the good oistcrs prepared a sumptuous frat of which we wcru alxait to pjjiako when AV. t M., How (.tepped in, receiving a hearty welcome from alL We listened in the afternoon to an able addr(a from him Mvrell as other Brothers. This GranHia--i!vopenuivc itore,of which it iV'nwVlng'a grand 8uccms. rtwtTeled over a portion of Yamhill and' Pidk countii-a during th wek, loav- iK my appointments of Amity, McCoy, J)allfi, Shi'tid.m and Iiulepenilenco for next week. Jlut with Soap Crock Grange on tho 12th, wliero I was surprised to sco so largo n, company, for the house was filled to overflowing, and so many young por sons taking part in tho Grange, which certainly speaks well for the community. Installed the olliceis, Ilros. Fioinan and Faync acting as crilics, which part they performed admirably at my expense, as the hall was so densely crowded it was impossible to do jus-ticc to the ceremony. Spent tho night with Hkk W. L. Cau- thorno and Bowman anil on the 13th camo with Bio. Payne to his homo cast of Albany. On thu ISth was at Oak bridge, where we had a largo and en thusiastic meeting, lira. Irvino install ed tho oll'iccr. They lmvo had a good lively Orange. I failed to fill an appoint ment nt (iohpti as I was misinformed in regard to tho time of meeting, but prom ised to meet with them on tho 0th of February. On tho I'.lth met witliLob.inon Grange, where the Brothers and Sisters aro alivo to the work of the order. Oilleers were installed by 15a. Powell. Tho grain in Yamhill, l'olk and Linn counties looks finely and farmers aro still plowing. If tho farmers would tako more Grange literature and patronize our agricultural x'apers moie extensively they would soon nsecitnin that we, at least many of ns, must cliaiigo our mode of farming to a great extent. I am more strongly impressed now than formerly, that our lands can be fertilized with clover. Is not this subject worthy our early and earnest attention I I sec much complaint from Illinois the gar den of Ainericn that tho wheat land are being exhausted. Why thould we on tho Pacific slope follow their example and impoverish our virgin soil by con tinuously raising w heat? Now, if clover will fully restore to our soil tho proper tie" exhausted by wheat - and I fully believe it will would it not bo bettor to put our summer-fallow to clover and rcceivo a crop of hay in.-tead of plowing all summer? Thin'i of it and talk about it Itiotlier Grangers. H. K. Hayes. The Orange In Josephine County. Wtu.iAJih, Or., Jan., 23, 1SSI. We have many young member. Yehtcrday, the 22d, the Grunge wa called together to bury Worthy Brother J. O. Shoemake, the coreniony was very impressive and the singing excellent, the congregation largo and nttontive. Tho mumps in u mild form is a gen eral complaint throughout the valley, otherwise there has been very little tick iiw in this vicinity so far this winter. There has been very little rain so far, and we aro having cold, freezing nights with warm sunny days, and more mud than is necessary. There has not boon much winter wheat sown throughout the valley. Tho few acres sown is. looking very nice, and a few farmers are plowing and sowing at this writing. The Grango fQ-operativo store i" grad ually and surely gaming in patronage and capital notwithstanding it ha gioat outside ojip'.T-ilion, but that is the life of trade, and if m, the more oppo-ition the better. 1 am a new i-iib-iilx'r to the Faiimi:ii and like it very much.
