Wo met, a short time ago, a gentle man from Pacific county, W. T., who gave an interesting account of efforts making at cranberry ettlturo in that vicinity. This is a business that requires great caro and cxponso in preparing tho ground. The placo chosen, is old sea beaches on tho Peninsula between tho ocean and Shoalwater bay, whero sandy ridges havo been thrown up by tho ocean, and between tho ridges are nar row valleys of rich muck. This is tho homo of the wild cranberry and attracted attention on that account. A man from New Jersey w as sont up to examino tho locality who pronouncod it favorable. He was a German 73 years of nge and has been for forty years ongaged in cran berry culture. The means was furnished to put twenty acres in good condition, which was done by taking off four inches of top muck, and replacing it with sand, at a cost of $300 an acre, or even more. This fall, the ground being ready, a ship ment was mado from the East of forty four barrels of cranberry vines, which are to bo cut up and plantod as cuttings. The men wh are doing this are named Chihean, uncle and nephew. It is prob ably tho best experiment of the kind over mado on the coast and will be likely to prove very successful. If bo it will lead to similar operations on a much larger scale. Lye as a Winter Wash for Trees Complaint has boon mado that in some instances tho use of lyo as a wash for trees Infested by scalo insects, has proved injurious to tho buds. Wo do not doubt that this is true. Lye is one of those very useful agents that must bo handled with discretion, and with due regard to the condition of tho trees and tho object to bo attained. In tho first issue of this paper will be found this sentence : "Owners of trees infested by insects, should beware of spraying thorn with strong lyo after the buds swell, as thcro is great danger of serious injury in so doing. Tho safer rnlo is to apply lye as a spray only, to deciduous trees in winter, when they aro perfectly dormant. Hundreds of authentic cases can bo cited where dormant trees have been thoroughly washed with concentrated lye, ono pound to tho gallon of water, without apparent injury to the .trees, but with very great benefit. We infer, from published results of ex periments, thot tho apricot and poach como "uiuler this, head, but we cannot -ipcak froni'personalj experience. Their uputcd tenderness may ariso' from tho f.n t that tho sap btira in them earlier 'ftlian some other trees, and a date, which might bo safe for spraying the apple, would bo late for lliem. Even when the buds' aie swelling, there is no uniform rule as to tho dan ger of injury. Wo hao scotched apple trees badly, whilo plums, treated "at the same time, Were unhuit, although the latter wero so far advanced as to show white lines between the bud-scales. We havo used the same on .apple treos in the Univerfcity orchard, with indifl'cienl results as to killing tho common apple wale, Aspidio tus concbinfonnirt.' Last winter, on 'the other hand, one half pound to a gallon was thf-re applied to tha pounn'infested by both tho apple scale and the whito or pear scale, Aspi diosus rapax, and nearly a'clean sweep was made of both vpecio. In this latter case, for some weeks fol lowing tho application, there was quiet weather with that alternation of fog and sunshine which we Ixdievc promotes the etllcaev of thcM wash.
