John Smith died Friday aftei- noon, January ISth, at tlio houso of Dr. Rafferty, East Portland, Mrs. Raflerty being his daughter. He was born July 1, 1S0C, in Kentucky, came to Oregon in 1S32, was in the lcgisl.ituio fioiuLinn county in 1802. as appointed agont at Warm Springs Indian Reservation in 18G4, and remained there, having been re-appointed lnt fapiing, until Death set its boal upon him last summer- Ho died of that dreadful disease, cancer of the stomach, and sufl'cied greatly for six months. His remains weie taken to tho old homestead ho took up in 1873, after one years residence in Salem, near Oak ville, Linn county, ten miles from Alba ny, wheio they tteio bun'ed on Sunday, and no doubt a large concourse attended tho last obsequies of the good old man. Ho was a consistent member of tho Presbyterian chinch and a de oted friend of the Indians, uholoed and honored him, as v.cl! they may. He found the: debased and degraded to the uttermost. Nogood-cnio had been taken of them and they wero literally savages when Capt. Smith w out to them. Under his kindness and instruction. they havo made great progress ; thoy farm their lands well and aro really ciulized; their chil dren ha 0 many of them been schooled ; they live in comfortable houses in a com foi table way and respoct our laws and our religion. His work among thoso outcasts has earned for him tho respoct of good men in this world and no doubt has merited the eternal reward to which he has gone. He has a steam thresher and had use for sacks last sum mer, so he used thoso sacks to ship his wheat latoly. He cleaned it thoroughly by hand, at the rate of forty or fifty bushels an hour, working at that rainy days when he could do nothing else. He sold his wheat for $1.01 a bushel, thus cleaned, to Salem mills, saving warehouse charges and something over. He says he made four cents profit over and above tho ordinary price of wheat at the time. A number of farmers uro talking of vetting permission to put up a twenty thousand bushel wheat grana- rv cm the depot grounds spaced oh", say, -oils togio each man 1 com for two thottband bubhels of wheat. There will ho u common wheat cleaner and what eer comenianccs the owiors may chooe. They can handle their grain then to a certainty and by selling in bulk, 01 in large lots, can got thociy top 0 the market. This is exactly the plan Mr. Northcutt proposed last fall in his communication to our columns. 6iiiic'Kiiti:u will ploato buy a jMMtnl noto or neiid by lcgisterod loiter to ua direct.
