Some one who has had access to the Agricultural Bureau's statement of the wheat crop for this year gives out that it will be about 100,000,000 bushels short of last year's crop. Tho Bureau's state ment of the crop of last year was 504,- 185,470 bushels. This year's crop, there fore, is about 404,000,000 bushels. A member of the Ne.w York Produce Ex change, in a recent number of Brad atreet's, cuts down the crop of 1882 to 480,000,000, or 24,000,000 less than tho Washington Bureau reported it. If he ii right, then this year's crop will not exceed 380,000,000 bushels, and that will leave us but 74,000.000 for export. The quantity we can export from a crop a nor nnr nnn u..l-.nln ... .nn.v.ul Ili.uJ Ul ooUjUWjVW uuBiitnn id ic.K;iiuu wua, We consume for seed 54,000,000 bushels; for bread for 56,000,000 people, each 4i bushels, 252,000,000 bushels; bread and seed, 306,000,000. Deduct from total crop (880,000,000 bushels) and we have 74,000,000 only for export of this year's crop. "But there was a reserve of the crop of 1882, August 1st, amounting to 85,000,000 bushels, which, added to the above, 'gives a possible quantity of 100, 000,000 bushels for -export in 1883-84, without any reserve for the next harvest year. We may safely state that the surplus of tho Pacific coast available for export from this year's harvest will be 40,000,000 bushels, or two -fifths of the whole surplus of the country. The crops and exports for the five years ended with 1882 were as follows : Crop Bushels. 361,191,147 S,7;6(UO 498 840,788 380,080,000 604,185,470 Exports Lnshels. 148,(00 000 183,000,000 184,000.000 118 000,000 148.000,000 Yalta. 1877-78.. 1879-80.. 1880-81.. 1181-82. . 1838-84 The estimate of tho Washington Bu reau frives possible available exports for 1883-S4 at 124,000,000, without holding any in reserve. The estimate ot the rroduce Exchange contributor for Brad street's is 100,000,000 bushels, with 9,000,000 bushels reserved, and this in cludes the reserve of 35,000,000 bushels from tho crop of 1882. If he is correct we shall have less wheat for export this year than any year since 1878. E. H. Walker, who is the statistician of the New York Produce Exchange, indorsed by Bradstreets as "very able," says that the wants of all wheat-importing coun tries this year equal 313,000,000 bushels, and thpt "the available supplies from all exporting countries," including the United States, of course, are but 232, 000,000 bushels, leaving a deficiency of 81,000,000 bushel. If Mr. Walker's estimates aro correct, there should be a considerable advance in wheat between this and next spring, a well as a heavier demand than has over yet been made by Europe on the surplus Indian corn f the United States. Fortunately this crop w a large one, being estimated by the Agricultural Bureau at 1,025,000,000 bushels. S. F. Chronicle. Lord fihrBtPrfieid. the nink of polite- nee. Tlio fine scrapings" of nny common cnttlo'a horn steeped in unegar and bound hot as can be borne upon a wound will subduo pain almost instantly, and effectually subdue lockjaw. I have often used this remedy, and have never had a failure. In wounds torn and lacerated, as, for example, w here a nail has been stepped on, penetrating the sole of the foot, and the patient wild with pain, countenance livid, teeth chattering, limbs trembling and lockjaw seeming in evitable, with this remedy I hac pro duced perfect quiet, relaxation of mus cles and freedom from pain, and even from soreness of the wound, in the space of fifteen minutes time. I was called in haste to see a young man of 15 years who had stepped on n nail. I found him almost in spasms and had no reme- ics with me. In the house 1 found a pow der horn, and with a piece of glass went to scratiinsr. As soon ns I had a common thimbleful I barely covered it with vinegar ana heated it as hot as could be borne, and, betting others to scraping, I applied it to the wound, changeiL often as soon asicool, adding the scraping accumulated, and with this treatment had this boy easy and out of danger in. fifteen minute. I know not what there is in horn that produces this Leffcct, which 1,'havo seen many times., and hae often, wished there might be some preparation of, this remedy a little more convenient to" use than the crude material. ' , , Bed Tea and Milt Physicians who used to prescribe brom ide'or' soda" or-potassium for sleepless ness now urge their patients to take beef tea instead,- says the Christian Union." Tho writer, trying various pro scriptions .with little benefit, was at length so fortunate as to receive such advice. At first beef tea w as used with somo light broad or biscuit broken in it, sipped fiom a spoon as warm as it could be taken. Afterward milk, just scalded, not boiled, was substituted, and, to make it more easy for digestion, a tablespoon ful of lime was added to half a tumbler of milk. To facilitate matters, a pocket stove with an alcoholic lamp, or nn ar rangement for the gas hxture, should be at hand. If neither beef tea or milk can be easily procured, hot water alone with an infusion of hops or mint may be substituted, or even hot water alone will quiet restlessness and n duce sleep. A darkened room that moonbeams can not enter, a little fresh air from an open fireplace or window, aro valuable assist ants in making the sleep continuous. When onco the habit of w akefulness is broken up, the beef tea or milk may be taken cold, bur not iced. If you aro always a poor sleeper, it will be well to continue this late supper as a permanent thing in your daily life. Seeds Best Sown In Autumn. Most people have observed, no doubt, that self-sown seeds that have dropped from the growing plants of the previous season sometimes produce tho largest and most healthy plants, that bloom the most freely. This is true of several kinds, particularly those that suffer ex posure to our midsummer sun. The reason is that self-sown seeds get a very early start in tho spring, vegetating as soon as the frost is gone, and are good sized plants by the time we usually put seeds in tho ground, even if they do not start in the fall. They thus mature and flower during the cool weather of spring. The clarkias and nemophilas and annual larkspurs are fiqted examples. There are also several varieties of hardy annuals that do well with spring sowing that will bear autumn sowing in open ground, and reward us with early spring flowers. Sweet alyssum and white candytuft will give us abundanco of white for early cut ting, if sown in the fall. In a sandy soil the iwrtulacca may be sown in the au tumn with good success. Seeds of bien nials and periennials, if sown early enough to pioduce strong little plants, will flower the next summer, l'ansies and Chineso pinks, though they bloom the first summer if sown in the spring, will make much stronger plants and flower more freely and earlier if young plants are grown in the autumn. West ern Farmer. Coolant bs Beat. A farmer came into a grocery btoro the other day, and exhibited to the eyes of nn admiring crowd an enormous i egg, about six inches long, which he avowed to have been laid Ly one of his own hens. He had it packed in cotton, and wouldn't allow anybody to handle it for fear of breaking the phenomenon. The grtyeryman examined it with the rest, and, intending to chaff the countryman, said: "Pshaw! I've got something in the egg line that will beat that" "I'll bet you five dollars you haven't," said the countryman, getting excited, i "Take it up," replied the groceryman, and, going behind the counter, he broueht out wire eec-beter. ''There's something in the egg line that will beat it, I guess," said he, reaching out for the takes. ', "Hold on, there," said .the fanner; "let's see you beat it," and he handed it to the grocer. Tho latter held out his hand for it, but dropped it in surprise on the counter, where it broke two soup plates and a platter. It was of solid iron, painted white. ''Some folks think they're darnation cute," muttered the farmer, as he pock eted tho btakes and lit out ; "but 'taint no ue buckin' against the solid facts."
