fee of $100 each; 40 retail liquor saloons,
piying $300 each; 12 beer saloons, paying
100 each, and 20 pool, pigeon and I illiard
tables, paying in the aggregate $775 per aa

After an extended trip through the Upper
Country, the Orujonlan's correspondent gives
it as his estimate, gathered from every
source, that tl o grain crop for the coming
season will be double that of any year previ
ous, uarnelu county alone, on tne lowest
estimate, will yield a million and a quarter
bushel, and other counties oveu more than
this All towns are growing and progressing
h'naly.

amount to nothing. The troop who have
moved out from Walla Walla merely go into
summer camp as usual. If troub'e should
occur, it will be by reason of the criminal
foolishness of the Interior Department. If
the Indians are left to the military no harm
will ensue, as they have as much confidi lice
in them as they have disgust and want of
confidence in the agents of the Interior
Department.
Dayton mills have advanced lumber S3 per

It is stated that the lllakcly Mill Company
havo abandoned for the present the project
of building a wide gauge logeing railroad from
Oyster Hay to tho Chehalis river.
Tho Oregon Improvement Compiny have
deeded five lots in Prescott for school
purposes. Fivo other lota have also been
purchased, and a building to cost $3,000 will
be eree'ed.
The Goldendale Gavtle says that between
the mouth of Rock crtek and Chapman creek,
some 25 miles east o G ddend lie, and imme
diately on the Columbia river is a body of
several thousand acres of good government
land, nearly every acre of it readi for the
plow. A sc ire of good farms could be
opened out there in sight of both railroad and
steamboats.
Two Indians camo into Cheney recently
with a largo bay mare, which they said they
had taken fiom one of Moses' Indians, who
had stolen tho tnor i from a fanner near Mon-
dovia. Sheriff Dillon went with tho Indians
to cap turn tho thief, who was camping near
tonn, out lie mado his escape and has not
been captured. The Indians who took the
mare from tho thief are Spokanes, and they
aro excited lest Moses's Iiidiani succeed in
making trouble.
Jackson county has two men awaiting the
action of the Grand Jury, charged with kill
ing their own fathers.
From Mr. M R. Lee, who camo over the
mountains from Coos, tho Roseburg Plain
dealrv learns, that Parker's taw mill, situated
about seven miles above the mouth of Coos
river, near Randolph, Coos county, was
burned on Saturday, April 14th. This was
the largest mill on the river, and is a heavy
loss to the proprietors, as well as to the
surruinding community. Loss, $15,000. No
insurauco.

run through liaise City, and tint orders have

survey.
Lewiston citizens dilino to lay the rails
and ties on tho grade from Toxas Ferry to
a junction of the Palouse branch, giving as
a reason that Walla Walla would reap all
tho benefit.
A Walla Walla dispatch of a late date says:
Captam McGregor, with troop A, and Lieut,
ltackus, troop L, fully equipped, left this
forenoon t establish a military post at the
mouth of Foster creek, near the mouth of the
Okanagau river. Knowing ones hero belieie
that Moses is to be forced luick on to his res
ervation and that posts will be established in
anticipation of outbreaks by his tribe. The
expedition is under the command of Captain
McGregor, an old Indian fighter,
Some Warm Spiing Indians obtained a sup
ply of whisky and returned to the reservation
on Saturday, the 14th inst., and indulged in a
gi and blow-out and four of them drank thrco
bottles. Secama, the medicine min, n ado
threats against Adams and others of the four.

was found dead w itli blood running from Ins
mouth and nose, and his bolt twisted around

miles this side of Pendleton. All of Hates'
men aio at work on the grade between that
p int and the summit. The prospects for the
completion i f the road to Mcacham'a at an
early date, are at pnsent very encouragiug.
This will bring the railroad within about 23
miles of La Grande, which will kuock the
bottom out of 3 cent freight.
