The cold snap has put a stop to mining op orations but it is not liable to last long More rain is needed to facilitate business in this line, however. The miners of Josephine county have been favored with much more rain than those of Jackson; besides, the weather has not been so cold there, and many are busily at work already. Sleighinz is indulged in at Fort Klamath, Liko county. The Washington Packing Company have finished their now cannery at Astoria, and are now busy putting in net racks. The ma chinery will soon bo shipped from San Fran cisco. Five families, comprising upwards of twenty persons, airived froti. Iowa this week, and will probably locato somowhere in Jackson county, f.iys a Jacksonville raper. They are delighted with our climate, and say there will be a bre immigration tQ Southern Uregon from that State. Scarlet fever seems to be spreading through out Southern aud Southeastern Oreg. n, but fortunately fatal cases aro not frequeut. The Roguo river valley distillery will soon commence the manufacture of liquor. The establishment will have a capacity of 2Q0 gil Ions per day, and will be conducted on tho best business principles. A postofGce has been established at Hebo, Tillamook county, Ogn., with Geo. W. Boyd face as P. M. A number of Portland ecntlemen have asso ciated themselves together under the name of the Tacoma Oil Company, for the purpose of 1 sinking wells for oil. They are as follows ; J. H. Hall, President; J. Lowengart. Vice President; J. Simon, Secretary; C. P. Ferry, Treasurer. They have a capital of SI 0,000 on hand to operate with. The N. P. R. R. Co. have filed a petition for right of way through Multnomah county. Some Chinamen murdered a Chinese prosti tute near Cheney, and a mob took the offend ers and hung them. U. S. Jackson, Jr., of Washington county, filed bonds in the sum of S100.000 as adminis trator of the estate of U. S. Jackson, Sr. The Oregon State penitentiary Ins 117 in attendance. Philip Ritz, ol Walla Walla, has a wheat farm of 7,000 acres near Ritzville, on the line of the N. P. R. R., which he propises fenc ing next year. He has a portable saw mill and will have the railroad cpmpany bring lops by rail. It takes 50 car loads to make the 12 miles of fencing necessary. The posts will be of cedar. R. extension, south of Rosebnrg, is not being pushed for ward very rapidly, on account of the inclem ency of the weather, but work will be pushed forward in the spring at a lively rate. A child of Sam Dunnis, near Sheridan, was last week burned to death. The road bstween Corvallis and Yaquina is reported to be in a terrible condition, and also a landslide is reported as having occurred at Tunnel No. 1, on the O, P. R. R. A Nashville (Tenn.) dispatch siys the legis lative committee finds tho State funds $400, 000 short. A vein of oil has been struck in Sarina, Michigan, at a depth of 565 feet. Fifteen thousand peoplo visited the remains of Gambetta at the l'alaie Bourbon. He will be interred at Pere Li Chaise temporarily. Evtensive and .suitable arrangements were made for the funeral services of Gambetta. Gambetta's death will produce no great changes in the political affairs of France. The exports of Victoria, B.C.. exceeded the imports by SI ,'330,000 during 18S2. During 1SS2 Utah produced 3,000,000 pounJs of lead. The treasurer of the cattle commission esti mates that it will require $2,000,000 to stamp oui me iiiDg piague amoig cattle m the Uni ted States, and recommends an appropriation. Dispatches, of Jan. 8th, give an account of the collision of the City of Brussels with the Kirby Hall in the Enelish channel. The Citv of Brussels Iie3 at presi-ut in fourteen fathoms of water, and is a total wreck. Two of the passengers and eight of tho crew were drowmd. The captain, by his bravery, saved the passenger, and was nicked nn in thn act of giving a comrade a life buoy. He was much exhausted, and is highly complimented for his bravery. The House Appropriation Committee re commend only $81,000,000, instead of $100, 000,000 asked of Congress, for payment of pension claims. The Hawaiian treaty will probably be abro gated, and in event of such a change the Ha waiian government will accept the reciprocity offered by England and Japan. Hon. M. C. George has introduced a bill, asking for the following appropriations for the Northwest Pacific coast, principally in accord ance with the estimate in the engineers in charge ; For the permanent improvement of thra mouth of the Columbia river, $500,000; additional appropriation for the harbor of re fuge nt Port Orford, $450,000; looks at the Cascades, $50,000; lower Willamette and Col umbia rivers from Portland to the sea, $125, 000; Coos hay, $75,000; Yaquina bay, $140, 000; Columbia and Snake rivers, $50,000; Coquille, Upper Willamette and Yamhill, $31,000; Umpqua river, $12,0C0; Cowlitz riv er, $3,000; Yotng's river, $1,000; Lewis river, $2,500; Siuslaw river, survey, $1,500; Tilla mook, survey, $1,500; Alsea river, $2,500. An eccentric clerk who roblscd an employer of $50,000 and absconded, is reported as hiv ing returned the money to a lawyer at Mon treal, Canada. He robbed his partner at the Cape of Good Hope to pay off the indebted ness. There will be several new steel vessels built for the U. S. Navy the present year. It is estimated to take $33,8S9,000 to improve our rivers and harbors the current year. Senator Piatt has prepared a bill for the protection of game on the Yellowstone Park. Also to protect the geological features of that lovely country. The Attorney General has made a decision in the Chinese "must go" law that the law only applies to laborers, and not to travelers and tourists. It is claimed by Hale, Edmunds and other opponents of the measure that the distilleries are to be made $60,000,000 better off by the passage of the bonded whisky bill. Lydia E.
