at the mouth ofthe Willamette.
Oswald Seifert, of Corvallis, has discovered
a new motive power he calls vacuum motive
power. The power is furnished by atmos

MiBs Carter, of Antelope Post-office, Wasco
county, is charged with stealing bracelets
from the mails.
The bark Elsimore, eight months from New
York, finds her cargo much damaged on the
long voyage.
The or shops of the N. P. R. R., at Ta
coma, are to be removed to Portland, and
workmen have been notified thereof.
Over 3,000,000 has been spent in improve
ments ot Portland and its suburbs tbe v ear
now ending.
The renia'iis of John Dennick, who was
drowned near Corvallis last June, have been
lately found.
The Oregon Improvement Co. has had to
add one-half to its wharf room at Seattle.
Mill Creek Flume and Manufacturing Com
pany, at Walla Walla, lost $2.1,000 by the
high water; buildings tarried off, dam and
flume injured.
Henry Dalpke. near Weston, was drowned
and his cabin carried off by the flood.
Tom Gilbert, an Indian, will be tried in
January for killing Wapato Dave, in Polk
county.
Peter Monison, clerk at Norton House,
died from an overdose of morphine.
'Dick the driver," a notorious rough, was
expedited out ot this world at Weeksville, on
tbe N 1. K. K., the preterit terminus ot
construction. He had robbed a man who lay
under a fallen barn of 300 while he was be
ing rescued.
W. A. Tefft, aged 21, committed suicide at
Kalama.
There are six cases of confluent small pox
at Weeksville. The diseasn came from
Missoula.
A. Wechenheimer, formerly of Harriiburg,
Linn county, ia under three indictrntnti for
perjury before the U. S. Dittnct C urt.
A plan to break jail at Portland was lately
frustrated.

prove a failure, because it claims to be per
