TnuiuiiAY, Oct. 20, 1882.
After several wekV absence wo return to
Oregon and find a delightful season and the
farmers able to do their work for the next
crop to advantage. Tho markets remain
without material change, and figures as to
wheat and tonnago have hardly varied for a
month or more. Perhaps toimnge is a little
higher, as oxportcrs givo 62 (Id for wood and
67 6d for Iron, ns tho cm lent quotations,
though thoy say that iron ships duo in De
cember and January are held for 60s, but it is
aft) to say thoy Hill hare to recede from that
8guro if thoy get charters. As wo stated a
month since, the quantity of tonnago coming
before January is not equal to our needs, and
thsreforo we need not expect cheap freights
before February, perhaps. When thcro wo
saw tho harbor of Sail Francisco abounding
with shipping, and yet that canuot especially
vail us, as tho preinuim required to induco
them to como here would equal what wo now
pay.
The English market fluctuates a little, but
not speculatively. Prices are dull now, but
they remain at just about tha samo figure, so
that Portland quotations aro $1 65 per oental
or valley, and $1 60 for Eastern. The drop
ping below that will simply cauao poople to
hold, and therefoto there is no material
chauge. Times are not active, as to. handling
wheat, but the movement is steady, ami audi
cient to load all the ships that arrive. We'd
neaJay a frieud from Polk county, who has
0,000 bushels choice w boat waa offered $1 60
per cental here, which is a top figure.
Oats are uot abundant, and as the crop is
Jight, we ueod not expect the price will be
Tery low, Quotttioua range 64 to 50c, and
quite a lot waa sold to tho Northern Pacific
Railway at tho last-named figure.
Hops are the. liveliest things in all the range
of products. On Thursday aides were made
at 05 cents per pound, and to w hat figure
they may yet advance there is no saying.
Everybody or mauy will now plant hops,
but another dsprrssion in the hop trade may
come wittnu two years.

The buyer is said to be Paul J. Cro ley, of
San Francisco, who is understood to be operat
