W. H. & H. LeMay, of London, Aug. 4th.
reported: The ttock of hops in England is al
most nil, and the present growth will not
exceeed 40,000 cwts. Our consumption is
600,000 cwts., so it is perfectly plain that we
shall want every hop America and the Contin
ent can send us. We strongly advise our
friends to make early shipments, as the prices
ruling at the commencement of the season here
must necessarily be high. We expect English
hops will fetch from 2030 per cwt. The
prices of liopi continue to advance, and stocks
of all descriptions are gradually being cleared
off the market by brewers. Nothing in new
English can now bo bought under 10 per
cwt., and fine samples are held for 15. The
hop plantations do not improve tho slightest.
The hops arc blacker than ever, and mould is
spreading seriously in those gardens that have
up to tho present had a chance to produce a
small crop. Tho American and Continental
reports are not so satisfactory at this day
week.
The first pocket of this season's growth ar
rived in the borough this morning. It was
grown by Thomas Manwarning, Esq,, and sold
hi Messrs. u, ii. jvawiey . 1.0., at JUHJ per
cwt. It is ot very fair quality, considering
extraordinary blight in the plantations, and
tho price is a very modcrato one tor tho first
pocket, considering the unprecedented short
ness of tho crop.
To roughly reduce these rates to cur own
currency, 20 and 30 per cwt are equivalent
to $1 and $1 60 per pound, whilo 50 per cwt
is equivalent to : 00 per pound. These
prices are cxtraoidinary, and give reason for
tho wild, extravagant anticipations of growers
at home.
Hops am now selling here at about 45 cents
a pound, but they cannot long remain at that
if tho price in England is to bo $1 and up
wards. The profits of hop production in a time like
this rival the most fabulous narratations of
trado. In Washington, for instanco, 2,000
pounds are grown toncrc, easily enough, whilo
tho averago is almost 1,800 Un. Tho real cost
is about 8 cents a pound. Taking the higher
production, for convenience, wo find $100
t' bo the cost of 2,000 pounds of hops. Sold
at 45 cents a pound $900 are obtained; tho act
profit being $740 for tho season's work. At$l
a pound tho product will realize the grower
$1,850 over all expenses, whilo at $2 50 a
pound ho will haul in the very comfortable
sum of $5,000. At such rates the growers
hereabout, who havo thirty or forty acres each
and one has over ninety become veritable
princes as far as income is concerned. Post
A Pendleton paper says that from various
parties with whom we have recently talked,
we leirn that tho amount of land sown to
wheat this fall will greatly exceed that of any
proceeding year. And this increase extends
to all parts of the county. Several farmers
will seed 2,000 acres or upwards each. With
a favorable season, Umatilla county will have
an immense surplus ciop next year, but that
will only be a si.iall part of tho amount that
will bo raised iu future years, that is if our
agricultural eggs all hatch, and wo think most
of them will.

Tno American Trotting Horse.
Ono of the material evidences of our advano
ing civilization is found in tho greater im
provcircnt and more extensive use of tho light
harness horse. Wood and form and sizo and
action have bcon tho objective points of breed
ing him, till now ho begins to assume a typo
of standard excellence. Especially does this
superiority obtain in the American trotting
nnrse. lie possesses somewnac oi ino muscu

hoartod capacity of the Hunter; tho dooility
of tho Nodjid Arabian; the tractable, patience
of the hardy Canadian, and the enduring wear

tho American trotting horse, among the vari
