terday they robbed the Overton country store

midnight they arrived at the farm house of

concluded they would ravish Newliall s daugh
ter, a young woman of 1!) years, whereupon
tho old man went into the house and immedi
ately reappeared with a double barreled shot
gun, opened Tiro on the desperadoes and
wounded one of thorn anil killed their horses.
They then stole one of Newhall's horses, and
placing their wounded comrade on it, rodo
awaj. A strong pmso of citizens aro in pur
suit of tho gang. At the meleo at Newhall's,
the old man was shot in the leg and severely
wounded,

Watermelons are in the market at Baker

The new flour mill building at Salem will
cost $125,000.
A new vessel has been launched at Worth
Bend, Cooscouoty.
The mill owners on Coos bay havo raised
the price of lumber $2 per M feet.
Thcro is a scarcity of lirre for building pur
poses in Salem.
More horses have arrived and are in train
ing at the Stato Fair Grounds.
The l'cmlleton post office disposed of
$770 80 worth of stamps last quarter.
The next session of the State Agricultural
College will begin on Monday, the 4th of Sep
tember. The Bedrock Democrat says the price of
land is on the increese, but considerable real
estate has changed hands within the past
week.
Company K, 1st Cavalry, of Walla Walla,
passed through Baker City last Thursday en
route to Boise City to relieve the command at
that plnce. Company consisted of 50 men ac
companied by three supply wagon3 and
ammunition.
On last Tuesday, says the Corvallis Gazette,
while Mr. Brink, the mail carrier, was mak
ing his usual trip, he saw a large -cougar on
the road near Mr. Bryant's place, about eight
miles the other side of the Summit.
Preparations are being made by tho Salem
hotel and boarding house keepers and others
to keep tho largo number of people that will
visit this city next month in attendance at
tho State Fair and Legislature.
The new channel ahovo Tongue Point has
been all buoyed out and at lowest tide has 18
teet ol water. It takes across to Harrington
Point and from there runs along the Wash
ington Territory side as far as Pillar Rock.
The mines on tho head waters of Ochoco,
and which have been worked with varied re
sults for ten years, have within the past two
or three years shown a gradual decrease in
tho yield of precious metal, Since 1871 there
has probably been upwards of $50,000 taken
from three mines, though tho exact amount is
not known,
Tho season has opened in Wasco county,
says tho Prinevillo 2reio, and the farniers are
busily engaged in taking care of their grain.
They are generally well supplied with all the
modern labor-saving machinery, and with
favorablo weather tho annual Summer seigo
will soon bo over. Tho grain in a few places
is rather short in yield.
Tho Oregon annual conferenco of the Meth
odist church will bo held at Albany, begins
ning August 23d. Bishop Hurst, a native of
Maryland and graduate of Dickinson college,
who completed his theological studies iu the
German universities of Halle and Hidelburg,
will preside.
Parties from Tillamook report that all kinds
of shell fish aro iu abundance at and near Gar
nbaldi. Quahaugs, razor-backs, blue clams,
mussels, crabs, oysteis and other molluscs are
daily caught in large quantities. Tho Tilla
mook Packing Co. havo already put up about
100 barrels of salmon.
Ono of Mr. A. J. Babb's youngest daugh
ters, of Kugene, had tho misfortuue to fall
from a fenco last Wednesday morning and
break her thigh bone, while visiting her grand
mother in the country. She was taken to
Kugene, and is getting along as well as could
be oxpectcd.

Thursday afternoon about 5 o'clock Mrs,
Petch, who lives at the foot of the mountains
on the Tillamook road from North Yamhill,
was returning home from North Yamhill in a
wagon, accompanied by her step-son, a young
man of about 10, and when within a short
distance of her house, some ono concealed in
the bushes along the roadside fired three shots,
one of which struck .Mrs. Petch in the neck,
passing through. She fell from the wagon,
dead. The horses ran off at tho sound of the
shots, but the young man managed to cheek
them in a few rods, and after tying them up,
returned to his stepmother, whom he carried
home. Word was sent to North Yamhill and
a party started out to hunt up the murderer.
The theory that is generally accepted in tho
locality is that an old family fued has existed
Between the fetch tamily and a neighbor
named Smith, which originated in Lan
Claire, Wisconsin, several years ago. That
when Smith came to this country ho took up
homestead land next to Fetch's property, and
in doing so Mrs. Petch charged him with per
jury, claiming that he had homestead land in
Wisconsin. She is accused of corresponding
with people back in the States with a view to
making it uncomfortable for Mr. Smith at
some future time. Mrs. Petch was about 40
years old and her husband about 70. He is
timber inspector for the O. R. & N. Co. in
that section. Ho is possessed of 2,100 acres
of fine timber land, upon which he lives, and
travelers on tho road frequently stop at his
house for meals. Smith has been employed
on tho O. & C. railroad about Salem for threo
or four months. As the matter rests, sus
picion falls on Mr. Smith as tho guilty party.
Mrs. Petch was shot at some time ago, but
by whom is not known.

Charles and William Masters, ot Polk
county, while hunting on the headwaters of
tho Santiam last week, captured two bear
cubs. While on their way to camp with
their prizes, tho mother of tho cubs suddenly
attacked them and with one blow of her paw,
knocked Charles out'of time, sending his gun
out of reach and freeing one cub. She then
turned upon William, who discharged his
Winchester rifle, inflicting a flesh wound in
her shoulder. She threw him down, releas
ing tho other cub, and dragged him CO yards
down a ravine. Charles had recovered his
f;un, but was afraid to shoot for fear of killing
lis brother. The bear finally gave William a
blow on the head, tearing his scalp fearfully
and then made off after her cubs. Charles
succeeded in getting his brother to camp and
dressed his wounds as well as possible, but it
was two days before they wero able to start
for home. Ono of them was in town yester
day afternoon, says the Salcir. Statesman, and
tho scratches upon his body wero yet un
healed. William is yet confined to his bed,
but will be about in fivo or six days. Bear
hunting is all very well, but when the bear
turns hunter thcro is not much fun in it.
AGRICULTURAL EXHIBIT BY THE BUREAU
OF IMMIGRATION.
Portland, Oregon, July 20, 1882.
To the Producers of Oregon, Washington and
Idaho:
This bureau desires to make a full collection
of agricultuial products from the harvest of
tho Pacific Northwest for 1S82.
For this purpose, the request is made, that
specimens of grain in tho sheaf and in the ber
ry, native and cultivated grasses, and of all
sorts of fruits and vegetables, bo delivered at
any railroad or steamboat station throughout
all this region, addressed to the "Bureau of
Immigration, Portland, Oregon," and they
will bo promptly forwarded by the agents of
the railroad companies.
Receipt of specimens will be duly acknowl
edged. Each article should be labelled with its
name, yield per acre, name and post office ad
dress of the sender, so that due credit can be
given.
Hoping for a general response, that will
make it possiblo to prepare an exhibit that
will do justice to the agricultural resources of
this grand region.
